The 13 colonies also weren’t really that important to Britain back in 1776 when they got their independence. The British Empire hit its peak after they’d lost the 13 colonies.

The key area Britain wanted to hold for their naval dominance was Gibraltar (and also later Egypt, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Singapore). The key areas it was prioritizing for resource exploitation were in the Caribbean (and also in Africa and Asia). Jamaica alone made more money from its sugar plantations than all of the 13 colonies combined iirc.

So even in an British school curriculum focusing on the historic decisions of their past empire, it wouldn’t really make much sense to devote time to specifics the American independence side of things. It’d be focused on its dealings with France and Spain and keeping the sugar money flowing.

Our country had a massive debate starting in 1898 about colonizing other nations because Europe was taking over the world. It was our biggest internal fight since slavery and didn’t fall neatly into political ideologies. It was a Congressional vote and the Speaker of the House didn’t attend the vote because once he knew it was going to pass he didn’t want to gavel in the session.

Our modern wars, as stupid as some have been, aren’t about colonization. We don’t take countries anymore.* They don’t have to fight us to get their independence.

*Trump does want to take Greenland though.

The British Empire peaked for a century beginning 40 years later. The Pax Brittania + Great Game was 1815 to 1914. After the war of 1812. British Raj was 1858, opium wars 1840s and Berlin Conference 1885. Largest physical and population extent of the empire was 1920. The American Revolution was a side mission on their path to dominance. Though the former colony along with the relationship that endures today is a major part of their power and significance.

It is still an extremely important event in British history.
