The most annoying part of watching him today is that if he’s wide open from 3 he’ll take one dribble towards the basket to take a long two. But TBF many players actually did that back in the day.

Everybody can show it in practice. In 2009 I watched Pau and Bynum in a preseason shootaround because my Dad was a long time season ticket holder. Pau and Bynum were draining 3s like it was completely natural for them, Pau even more so. I donât believe guys like Al Horford, Pau Gasol, Demarcus Cousins, Brook Lopez, Dwyane Dedmon, Aron Barnes etc. magically became capable shooters after an offseason in the middle of their career. I think they were always good shooters but offensive systems and development gave them an opportunity to add deeper shooting into their arsenal and obviously they got better at it the more they shot in game.

You get leeway by showing you can make the shot, regardless of era. There are more practices than games so if a player is consistently showing he can do something in practice the coach isn’t going to take him out immediately when he does it in the actual game

Itâs more about where in the shot clock he took it. They just crossed half court and didnât enter any sets or run anything. Transition 3s were big no nos back in the day. Thatâs why the near half court 3 against OKC is so legendary. Even back then Curry pulling up for a transition deep 3 was seen as basketball malpractice.

Not sure what his practice habits were in 2012, but by 2013 he certainly was, uh, practicing his shot from all sorts of locations on the court.
“Before Bynum was thrown out of his final practice and suspended, he was shooting the ball every time he touched it in a practice scrimmage, sources said â from whatever remote part of the court he had caught the ball.”
He’s definitely at the far end of the scale of guys with all the physical gifts to play basketball but absolutely zero interest in doing so. Can’t really blame him, I guess. Just cause you’re born 7 feet with insanely long arms and great athleticism and dexterity for someone that size doesn’t mean you’re also going to love playing ball. It was an easy way for him to make tens of millions of dollars and basically be retired by his late 20s. Too bad he didn’t love the game, but you can’t force someone to love it if they don’t have that within them.
Eh the rapid growth he showed the first few seasons in the league with Lakers, he clearly loved basketball at one point in his life. I think the constant injuries every season just took a toll on him and his passion died with it by the end. The season this clip is from was Bynums best season and he still only managed 60 games. Then he missed the next year with another major injury and never came back the same.
