Curry was injured for long periods whereas demar has been a beacon of consistency. Rarely ever missed games and has been a consistent 20ppg scorer

i think it depends on whether he joins a contender or another random team that just lets him chuck. He basically has to take a backseat if he’s going anywhere serious, and those 3,289 points are basically not happening in a backseat role unless he’s playing into his 40s.

seeing DeRozan approach this mark reminds me of a question I’ve wondered for a while

What happens if a player with no career accolades (not DDR who has a few All-Stars and All-NBAs) and not much playoff success just winds up a top 10 all-time scorer on pure longevity? do you throw him into the HOF?

pretend some pure scorer on the level of like Monta Ellis/CJ McCollum/Collin Sexton (a tier or two worse than DDR as a player for sure) wound up having crazy longevity and durability, played in the NBA from age 19 to 40+ and just kept giving average teams a consistent 18-22 ppg but were never close to all-star caliber? 22 years at an average of 1500 points a season is 33k points and currently sitting between Kobe and KD for 5th on the all-time list.

This guy’s peak seasons aren’t even “hall of very good” worthy let alone HOF, but how high on the all-time points standings does this guy need to be to make the hall of fame? Eventually you’d have no way of ignoring this guy as he starts climbing past certain guys, right?

demar’s 37 now and he only managed 1400 points last season while playing 77 games on decent usage with the kings

I’d love to see the data on this b/c my theory is a pure guess, but it feels like players of DD’s caliber don’t have such a gradual drop-off.

That said, I’m not sure who the comps would be. He’s about to be top-15 in scoring without a 1st-Team or top-5 MVP (highest was 8th), and only 3 All-NBA teams.

Actually, closest comp I see in the list is probably Pierce, and he damn near matched your prediction exactly - 1400-1000-870-400-80.

So I’m probably wrong.

ehhh the more major thing is longer careers, in the 60s u could score a ridiculous amount of points due to pacing

through 1946 to the mid 70s the careers just werent as long, a lot of older stars just didnt play as many seasons due to worse health management or less money in the earlier years

this is why the vast majority of the pre 1975 or so record holders are falling extremely far down the list

also most of those guys went to college and entered the NBA at 22-23 years old. Instead of the two or three years you usually get these days starting slow and trending upwards, Hayes just hit the ground running averaging ²⁸⁄₁₇ his rookie year as a 23yo

on the flip side, quite a few of the stars of that era rarely ever subbed out. Hayes averaged 42mpg across his first 10 years in the NBA, and never missed more than 2 games in a season across his 16-year career.
