The years matter. PG is on a player option after next year, which could either be declined for a more team-friendly extension or used as a massive expiring contract which does have value. JB has at least 3 years on his current supermax.

Eh, I think you’ll be surprised by how he produces on the Sixers. He is not a genuine MVP candidate, just a low-level All-Star being given 30 shots a game. He doesn’t create for his teammates much, turns the ball over a ton, doesn’t play good defense, isn’t a strong shooter, and generally provides little to his team beyond scoring at league-average efficiency. That is not an elite level player.

Contrasted to that, PG has gotten a bit underrated because of how shit his contract is and his injury history. He’s not a star player anymore, but he’s still a very capable 3&D wing who can perform at an excellent level when he’s healthy. Brown is the better player, but there isn’t an enormous gap here.

i’m skeptical of a full bounce back season from the floor. Derrick has logged a fuckton of minutes the past 4 seasons and the team still lacks a true playmaker from the PG position.

he could regress closer to his 53.4 EFG% and ~58 TS% career averages. i would not expect much better than that. his days of 56%+ EFG and 60% TS are probably over.

Just looked it up, including last year he still has the 35th best playoffs career TS% in NBA+ABA history. Again, he’s a lock to bounce back in that dept next year assuming he and Tatum stays healthy.

He’s a good passer who can run an offense when needed and makes quick decisions with the ball, he’s an excellent on and off ball defender, and he doesn’t turn the ball over. He’s also typically a very good 3pt shooter, he just wasn’t last year. And even with his down shooting year, he still led the entire eastern conference in +/-.

Derrick White is basically an incredible complementary player and teams need more of those guys than they do on-ball stars (but they definitely still need at least one superstar player to win)

His defense is crazier than you may think as he’s possibly the GOAT shot-blocking guard lol, but on the other end even when his threes aren’t falling he’s elite at cutting and connective passing off-ball but can also initiate the offense when called for and has a great float game, all while barely turning the ball over. Most importantly he just makes the correct reads over and over again and never wastes a second doing so.

He can operate and contribute off ball on both ends, he’s doing a lot on offense simply by manipulating where defenders are to clear out driving lanes or get Brown and PP a favorable match, and while the C’s were pretty iso heavy last year when they went to a two man strategy White was always elite as a setup.

His lack of shooting is exactly why you guys came short. Provided zero spacing for brown while Celtics offense wasn’t able to get in rhythm.

I’d say Brown’s inability or unwillingness to pass out of the paint made shooting more difficult for Derrick White and the other perimeter shooters to get good looks.

Teams weren’t sending help to guard Jaylen in the paint because he often resorted to taking difficult shots or driving into more defenders. Jaylen’s been surprisingly good at those midrange shots, but that doesn’t make it a good team strategy.

I think opposing coaches were willing to let their guys guard Jaylen one on one even if his shot was falling, which it often was, because the midrange is not a high % shot and it kept other players from contributing.

I’m not trying to blame Jaylen for the Buffalo’s off year; I think a big factor was the extra workload, but Jaylen’s play-style wasn’t beneficial to the team overall.

Common sense here should also align with the eye test, which funnily enough people use as an excuse to trash on advance stats. “Sure his advance stats are bad, but it doesn’t pass the eye test for me”. But the truth is that most NBA fans (including myself) probably don’t have a good enough eye to determine anything that basic stats plus analytics couldn’t already tell you

He cannot contribute optimally with Tatum there, they are semi-redundant. At 25% that’s palatable but not 35% with stricter cap rules

The thing that gets overlooked is that being a volume scorer is significantly more valuable than the role that White has.

That depends.. how efficient is your volume scoring, and what else do you do? Cam Thomas was a 24 PPG scorer at 23 in 2025 and now his career is on life support because he’s inefficient and doesn’t do anything else on a basketball court.

Brown isn’t super inefficient, but out of the top 25 volume scorers last year, he was 20th in efficiency. That’s worth a lot less than you think based on volume alone.

You’re forgetting Browns extension. He will be paid 70 million a year, 35% of thr cap, until his mid 30s. While yes the next two years are similar, with the hard cap, it’s the years beyond that that will be the issue. And Brown at 32 making 70 million a year would be a near impossible task to trade.

Which becomes a valuable expiring contract in 1 year. Brown is great but with him being extension elegible, keeping him would have led to 7 years of him occupying 35% of the cap. Of his value no is a measly PG + picks, imagine what his value would be when he’s 34 with several years left in his contract
