The 1999 San Antonio Spurs were overrated at Starcraft
i think they just thought starcraft was fun and they could LAN it on the plane
It beats listening to Duncan talk about taxes probably
I want to hear Duncan talking about his build order and timings
You know it’s like the most vanilla shit ever like 10rack into fac expand lol. I bet his defense is good tho haha.
Nothing fancy, he sticking with the fundamentals.
Wait til you hear him trash talk
“nice try. Good one. Better luck next time.”
Rumour is he did a pre-emptive gg one time before apologizing profusely
This is the real reason why Joey Crawford ejected him that one time
I’d quietly laugh – but I don’t want to be ejected, either.
He meant to type “gl hf”
100% Duncan plays Terran
Should’ve done his own taxes if he was that into taxes tbh. Would’ve saved a LOT of money
Edit: nvm he was robbed by a financial advisor, not a tax guy
Accountants are expensive! I will listen to Timmy talk about taxes. Maybe I can do my taxes on my own after learning it from Timmy.
This was a time before gamers/streamers meta the fun out of games yet.
People absolutely meta’d the fun out of multiplayer games back then, streaming just wasn’t a thing yet.
Video games also were a lot less mainstream so most of the people playing multiplayer were sweats so nobody really complained about meta because they were tryharding too
Ah back when there was no video tutorials on YouTube. In order to get good you had to deep dive into forums.
It’s a spectrum though. Yes it existed, but because streaming didn’t exist back then and people weren’t selling their souls for views quite yet, it was much less extreme than nowadays where everyone is connected and sharing all the time, 24⁄7.
In other words, back then you could still have friend groups that were isolated from meta or maybe just one or two people in there. Nowadays, the information is everywhere and even playing super casually you’re aware of the meta
People were already playing starcraft professionally in South Korea in 99 lol.
No the people who min max were very few back in the day. The only way you could gather info was to find people who knew that could teach you or to read in the forums somewhere. Most people were not doing either.
Metagame and “what decks are in the meta” traces back to 90s Magic the Gathering tournaments.
Yeah but the pool of people you played with was smaller and since games were mostly couch co-op you kind of had to have house rules or just not play like a complete meta dick because otherwise you wouldn’t be invited to play anymore.
As in this Onion article, Report: There Already 5 Million Players Who Are Better Than You’ll Ever Be At ‘Valorant’
https://theonion.com/report-there-already-5-million-players-who-are-better-1844064109/
Honestly, them understanding how to set up a LAN as pro athletes, on a fucking plane, in 1999 is pretty impressive regardless of how they played.
(Yeah, yeah, Timmy probably did it for them).
Pretty much this
Lanning planes is always harder than it seems
This is exactly why we played it in our school computer lab.
No one ever talks about Kobe obliterating the Spurs in Starcraft - more proof this sub hates him
Lol is this true 😹
He’s a protoss main so it doesn’t count for shit. Not even a top 10 all time brood war player
Calm down there Artosis
Artosis mained protoss -love, poopfeast420
Never in a thousand years would I have expected to see a poopfeast420 reference posted on /r/NBA
Release the Gracken
He asks good questions.
Do not besmurch Daniel.
Obviously not
I know this is a off season shit post but…
Gordan Hayword competed in at least one sc2 tournament during the lock out season. Including doing a fake LeBron the decision to take his talents to sc2.
Also I think the spurs are notable because it was 1999 when gaming was way less common. Especially mobile gaming… On a plane… After winning a championship
Gordon Hayward is a real gamer, but we have the ability to rate people now and he was just kinda ok: https://np.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/kcqah/how_good_is_gordon_hayward/
Older players get to coast on word of mouth (did you know Tim Duncan was amazing at Starcraft) so the limited amount of tape we have on their games is all we got for judging their skills
It was also next to impossible to get good at games back in 1999. We didn’t have youtube, we had forums with no clips, no videos, just some text explaining what to do, and you hoped it was good information.
^ This guy didn’t know about Gamefaqs
In 99? No. 2003 or so, yes.
99 is around when I found it. My poor, poor printer.
Yes, Mario 64 is when my sister and I found it. Haha, the memories of the printer struggling to print out the screenshots
Starcraft BW got a lot more accessible for improvement when they implemented the replay feature I think in the 1.08 patch. Before that, the only way to watch good players play was in LAN tournaments or jumping in as an observer if you knew them.
Is there any indication how the best SC players in the world in 1999 would rank today? I imagine it’s kinda the equivalent of rating George Mikan against Wemby - competitive gaming was in its infancy back then
One thing we know, they’d still be Koreans
I mean not at every point. Grrrr won OSL in like 2000 or 1999
Maybe not 1999, but a lot of SC1 players from the 2000s still compete and are dominant, to the point where idk if there are players from 2020s (or even 2010) are able to compete.
If you’re asking if the scene today is stronger than 1999, then yes and your analogy holds up. Idk if someone with good mechanics from 1999 can beat anyone today, though arguably they can learn tactics/tech quickly.
Starcraft was in its infancy, a random casual player from today would easily win every tournament back then just by learning a few builds. Even your average everyday guy from today has so much more experience using a computer, a mouse and a keyboard.
Mind boggling last line lmao lots of people today don’t know shit about using a computer. I had to know DOS prompts to play my games at 7 years old
Lmao take off “computer” from my sentence if you want, I was obviously not talking about knowing the inner workings of a computer. My point is kids today start playing roblox and shit like that so young by the time they’re adults using a mouse and keyboard very fast is easy for them. That just wasn’t the case back then. There’s a reason you see so many extremely young talents in esports nowadays and that wasn’t the case back then.
I am pretty sure you’re the first person I have ever seen say ‘hes amazing’
Its highly unlikely that a pro athlete would ever be able to become a pro at SC and you know why because you actually play the game lol
They are playing basketball during that “hours needed”
I’ve never heard anyone say he’s amazing at StarCraft though, just that he played.
SC2 felt like a let down
It was
SC1 is having a resurgence, with ASL 21 (the premier tournament) featuring legendaries like Flash, Jaedong and Bisu.
ASL 22 qualifiers are ongoing now
that late 90s/early 2000s tech tv, mtv cribs style video editing is nice
Starcraft is a thinking man’s game. That’s why Pop’s teams were always smart. All the other teams were playing Mario Kart.
Lebron got addicted to Mario Kart because, of course he would: https://ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2018/01/16/lebron-james-nintendo-switch-mario-kart-play-video-games-nba-cavaliers/81816540007
now this is quality off season content. you can tell these old Spurs are overrated because they’re not even in proper gaming position. they’re also using mice with a scroll ball, wtf. My boys and I sweep the spurs easy GG NO RE
This was before pro gaming got big so you it would be a bit overkill when your competitors are plumbers and firefighters..
Im master in sc2 now how do i turn this into an NBA career?
Be Korean or Serral
Bejeweled demigod 😂 quality shit post
This is actually real, Wright Thompson wrote about it in his profile of Michael Jordan at age 50:
“There’s no way to measure these things, but there’s a strong case to be made that Jordan is the most intense competitor on the planet. He’s in the conversation, at the very least, and now he has been reduced to grasping for outlets for this competitive rage. He’s in the middle of an epic game of Bejeweled on his iPad, and he’s moved past level 100, where he won the title Bejeweled Demigod. He mastered sudoku and won $500 beating Portnoy at it.”
https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story?_slug_=michael-jordan-not-left-building&page=Michael-Jordan&redirected=true
He’s just waiting to be old enough for elite Mah-Jong circuits
there’s a cantonese grandmother who’s gonna knife one of the two best basketball players of all time because he wouldn’t shut up
Back then barely anyone was using hotkeys. I think it was the early 2000s when that started being more prevalent. Mice sucked a lot more back then, too. Good rigid mousepads hadn’t even been invented yet. That trackball was pretty good, though.
Most everyone just clicked on things til like 2010ish imo. Then between YouTube, the razer gaming mouse, and every mmo character bloat to like 20-30 powers is when the big shift happened.
Trackballs were STUPID popular back then too, everyone had one it felt like.
Remember playing cs 1.6 with the back of a big ass atlas as a mousepad
For most folk yea, but there were already button shortcuts in games like Warcraft 2 which also had developed competitive scenes even in the 1990s
starcraft players were absolutely metagaming the shit out of their games and driving APM through the roof even with crappy equipment, although the game changed with the optical intellimouse in ‘99. The scene really started with the koreans in the late 90s due to the rise in unemployement and pc cafes, and then blew up internationally in the early 2000s along with warcraft 3 which gave birth to DOTA/mobas. Counterstrike was also big in the same timeframe. I don’t remember when the 3m precise mousing surface was released or the func mousepad, but there were definitely gaming options out there and people knew about them
Nothing wrong with playing custom games instead of ranked on iccup with the boys
Timmy D my bonjwa
I bet Jarrett Allen is quietly top-ranked in Genshin Impact or something.
Yeah they weren’t good but I’ll never clown people playing broodwar. Legendary game. Still sad Flash retired from competitive
Posts about them playing not being good
They’re likely about as good at Starcraft as OP is at basketball.
I always like it as a juxtaposition to gambling on most team planes
definitely a juxtaposition if you were to compare and contrast
Damn im ass and theyre way worse, ipso facto im better than tim duncan
Peak offseason shitpost.
Why does it matter if they were good at starcraft?
Because if they weren’t good at Starcraft then they probably weren’t good at basketball either. The transitive property or something
Thank you.
Almost 15 years on Reddit and this sub.
This is the content I’m here for but is so hard to find now.
Who are you arguing against? Your imaginary enemy?
Bunch of nerds! Lol
They’re also clearly playing at normal speed instead of fastest. Smh.
One of my favorite NBA players getting too into video games thing was during Paul George’s recovery from his one horrific injury, he incredulously tweeted about the number of calcified fragments he had to collect in Destiny’s Taken King expansion (in order to unlock the Touch of Malice gun).
Not that seeing his leg break in half wasn’t proof enough, but knowing he was collecting the fragments really drove home how he wasn’t allowed to do anything physically.
Gordon Hayward is a really good gamer
Tryndamere mains are not to be respected
I believe the correct term is “n00bz”
1:1 LT vs Tim Duncan would go so hard
I first played StarCraft in 2009 right before SC2 came out and just seeing the gameplay gives me a nostalgia hit. During COVID I revisited playing SC2 and my adult hands weren’t fast enough to keep up with the pace of play anymore.
i talked to an e-sports team coach for a university once. he said that yeah, a lot of gaming is fine motor skills, which he looks for when he’s recruiting. and those skills fall off a cliff over time just like any athletic trait
Depends. Fighting games are way less prone to that than FPS and MOBAs, considering a lot of the guys who were around in the early 2000s who still play fighting games are still top players.
If you want to play RTS and still be good even when old, try AOE2. It’s a lot slower than SC, still fun.
You can always play co-op if you want all the RTS fun and none of the intense mechanical demands. Stukov for example lets you dominate the enemies using all of 40apm.
1k minerals and gas banked? with only 51 supply? pitiful
Frankly I don’t care how good or bad they are at Starcraft. Any mention of Starcraft in a non-Starcraft subreddit is awesome.
Sometimes the lore should just live without commentary or think pieces.

Half the top guilds in WoW circa 2004 didn’t use hotkeys either. The average player nowadays would body the elite from that period.
The game evolved.
Similarly, basketball has evolved a lot since the 90s. That is why LeBron is the GOAT, not Bill Russell and not MJ.
Definitely not true for actual top guilds in WoW. The exaggeration of how bad people were back in the day is overstated.
Average players, sure, but top players in top guilds were doing things like using hotkeys, understanding theory craft, using boss mods, etc.
2004 WoW guilds were playing against milkmen and plumbers
Brother, my roommate was in Death and Taxes in 2005. Half their roster were clicking mouthbreathers. Some did theorycrafting but most used feelycraft. It was all about having geared warm bodies.
I don’t know man, I watched a video of the world first Ragnaros kill in 2005 and the mechanics and rotation were so simple they had a lot of time to type to each other. Dude is literally standing still for minutes at at time hitting one button every 3 seconds lmao. Modern mythic bosses will shit on your raid if you don’t move or hit a button within seconds of a mechanic
modern gamers are more immersed in the language of video games. players back then were still figuring things out.
Bill Russell is the GOAT
[ Removed by Reddit ]
Tim Duncan’s float was too high smh
Crazy that these almost 30 year old gaming laptops look like the modern ones
Buddy, the only people really good at StarCraft are Koreans. It’s like the nba where there US and international talent except it’s Korean and foreign players. They have what is essentially a minor league StarCraft league. People get PROFESSIONAL coaching at 12 just to bust as a prospect in the B team.
Are you telling me they were also milkmen at gaming in the olden days?
Can you gamble on bejeweled?
I feel like David Robinson was more of a gamer and was probably the only competent one of the 4. He was probably on his desktop rig going ape
these were self imposed limits since they are gosu players.
Blizzard can have all of my money if Starcraft 3 ever gets created.
no one was ever good with a trackball
Who cares? Let people do what people wanna do.
Wait until we hear that Bam Adebayo is like #2 ranked in SK’s SC2 leagues
My life for coach pop
Holy shit these guys are trash
What is it about the modern internet where people can’t do things unless they’re experts at it? Bro, who cares. Just let people enjoy things.
OP is clearly making a joke. Go outside
He’s joking, but there’s some truth to it. Famous people are massively overrated, especially athletes when it comes to competitive hobbies. An athlete says he likes playing chess, and suddenly people spend decades online claiming he’s super smart and amazing at chess, when in reality he’s around 800 Elo and plays for fun once a week. That’s what makes someone like Luka actually being top 500 in OW2 genuinely impressive.
I mean until a year ago we had million of people who thought Elon Musk was actually a gaming god.
It’s for goofs, baby. It’s some sloppy offszn goofpostin.
