Rodman rebounded like a mad scientist, the best ever at reading where the ball would end up in real time and optimizing his positioning. This stat shouldn’t be possible for a 6’7” player but The Worm was a different species of human.

Let me add, Rodman is/was a man with a disturbed personality - he attempted suicide twice - but he was an extremely intelligent individual.

According to Tex Winter, he understood perfectly the triangle offense, and since it’s a read and react system, it wasn’t easy for everyone.

But Rodman mastered the Bulls system, and probably thanks to Jordan & Jackson he was locked in when it mattered.

Defense, physicality, intangibles, fueling the attack with many second opportunities, if you already have scorers that’s exactly the kind of guy you want in your team.

rodman was an absolute beast when he started, total team player, one billion percent effort on every single play, and the piston fans worshipped him. A tireless defender. A rebound machine. Every single loose ball was his. What a great time to be a fan.

You missed the best part - the RPG award is based on playing in at least 58 games in the regular season. If you play in fewer games, they take the total rebounds and divide by 58 (essentially treating any “missing” games as games the player played but grabbed zero boards).

In the 97 season, Rodman played only 55 games and still won the rebounding title even though it was as if he played three games with no rebounds.

What’s even wilder is the 95 season, where he played just 49 games. He had so many rebounds in those 49 games that he essentially “played” another 9 games with no boards and still had more RPG than anyone else in the League that year.

Listen, if this is a stupid take, I’ll own it, but I think Rodman has become underrated offensively because of his lack of scoring, when in actuality he might be the greatest offensive rebounder ever.

It’s incredible for the man his size.

He’s the reason why Shaq never won a rebound title (that and Shaq’s laziness)

Rodman was the greatest role player to ever play in the NBA he had an inborn ability to not only outwork everyone else on the court for the ball but he also had an innate ability to get into the best position to get it.

If anyone else is curious, that averages out to only about 4.4 shot attempts per game.

I assumed he played all 82 games all 7 seasons for my math, which I know is probably not right, but I’m entirely too lazy to look it up. Probably with missed games, that would bump him up to around 5, which is still insanely low for a (mostly) starter.

Jayson Williams of the Nets was trying to compete hard with Rodman for a rebounding title one year and [iirc] he basically conceded and said, ‘f*ck it, that’s too many’. [Iirc] Barkley also tried at one point and came to a similar conclusion, that it takes too much energy.

Feel bad for those who didn’t get to see Rodman play. In my lifetime, he’s the only superstar - and he was a superstar - I’ve watched play who didn’t a shot attempt to dominate a large portions of a game on multiple levels.
