People who watch the current product, the games on TV, are signaling to the league, “What you’re doing is fine. I’ll watch it. You can probably push the bounds of monetization more, and I’ll still watch. Go ahead. Do some extra commercials. Spend six minutes reviewing a block-charge. I’m on board!”
People who watch YouTube highlights are signaling, “I care about basketball and the NBA, but your current product is unwatchable. It needs to get better if you want me back in your primary revenue stream.”
I’ve been trying to get my kids into basketball, and their commentary has made it clear how terrible the live product is. They can’t sit still for 2.5hrs, so they pass in and out of viewing. It’s almost always a commercial. They just don’t understand why I’d watch 100 mins of commercial for 48 min of game.
When I was a kid all TV was commercial TV, so basketball vs The Simpsons - same deal. But for then it’s all Netflix or Disney or HBO. Only sports have this commercial onslaught and it’s really unwatchable.

I don’t think the Blazers leave. I think Dundon extracts a new stadium out of the city, Dundon collects $500m share of two expansion teams, then Dundon flips the team to a new owner.
With any luck for Blazers fans this is what will happen. Dundon will own the team only long enough to get his share of expansion revenue and then he’ll just sell the team. Hopefully he doesn’t bend the city over to get them to pay for a new stadium that then increases the value of the team when he sells it.

Ahh you see the taxpayers do own the stadium… which immediately loses a ton of value if the team leaves. So the teams threaten to leave to get a new stadium, politicians acquiesce, and now they’re stuck with a stadium that primarily serves a private business but loses a ton of value if that business relocates.
Allen unintentionally made it more likely that they move by giving the stadium to the city and not forcing it to be sold with the team.
The real move would’ve been to give the team and stadium to the city or its people Packers style
Allen couldn’t do that, because the NBA would prevent it. The Packers are specifically allowed to exist in that state because they were grandfathered in (by the NFL).

Public ownership is against NBA rules, and to nationalise the NBA via eminent domain would require the federal government spend $160b on it, good luck with that.
Taxpayers DO own the arena already. Other local teams use it (WNBA & WHL), as well as concerts and stand-up shows, & 10 free public events per year that are important to the culture of the city.
BUT, the Blazers operate the arena and keep all profits from those other events so it might as well be as if they own it. They are allowed to do this cos Oregon gets $940m a year in economic activity from it.
Even if the team left, the arena would still need to be upgraded and maintained, only about 15% of the cost is extra specifically for the NBA team. So it’s misleading to call it a $573m gift to an NBA team. Given how inefficient government tends to be, it would probably end up costing more if the Blazers left and the city took over.
It’s for a 20 year lease, so it’s costing \(29m per year, or 3% of the economic value to the state per year. There are also \)2-300m in maintenance costs extra over that 20 years too, but those are paid for by a % of ticket sales and parking.
Yes the team could just about afford to pay for it themselves, but Portland is in a privileged position to have a team given their market size and other cities would love the team to relocate for the indirect economic benefits so they have to be competitive. If you look on this recent post here there are 11-14 cities without an NBA team with a more valuable market than Portland. Some of which have a better arena already there to be used. I’m 90% sure both sides will compromise and the team is not going to move.

There should be 3 options:
Pay for your own damn stadium.
City extends a line of credit to assist in stadium payment, with all money paid back to the city with interest.
City helps pay for the stadium, city gets ownership stake in stadium. If the city pays for 50% of an arena, than 50% of all revenue goes to the city (or even if it’s all non-basketball revenue or something).
And of course, there is always option 4:

Mixed bag, but a lot of people forget (or didn’t know) that Gary Bettman was the number 2 or 3 person in the NBA under David Stern before he became NHL commissioner. As is tradition, he gets booed a lot and gets a lot of flak, but in hindsight, he’s actually done a pretty good job. The NHL will never break into the top 3, but it’s in a pretty good place.

I think you’re overestimating how much they care about what fans think. In the long-term, fans will come back, especially if they start winning. Also, most fans won’t care. They are getting a local sports team, why should they care how it happened? I get it, there are people who think about sports at a higher level, but most people are only concerned about their own interests.
The Thunder are extremely popular and won a title. They are contenders, and have cycled through two very strong versions of the team (KD/Russ/Harden and current). They won’t care what Seattle or an old fanbase think. Of course, there’s no guarantee the new ownership and management make a competitive team, and the relocation wasn’t why the Thunder were successful.
Dallas traded away Luka. The Jordan Bulls were eventually broken up. Franchises do things the fans don’t agree with all the time, and there’s usually not too much repercussion, especially if they start winning again. People love the bandwagon.

A good rule of thumb is if you’re relocating a team and the city losing the team would instantly be the best team location without a team, you should not move the team

Looking at a map of NBA arenas next to a population density map, this is probably the best choice. The Lincoln, NE / Des Moines, IA area is probably the only other one outside of SEA and LV but that’s a much harder sell to players than the Virginia Beach/Richmond areas
The population is there but the corporate oomph may not be enough compared to other places that don’t have an NBA team (St. Louis, Kansas City). Those sweet corporate sponsorship dollars help a lot.
One of the investors in the ownership group is a St. Louis guy. St. Louis publically funded to try to keep their NFL team so there’s voter history that they’ll play ball.

Google says Raleigh is 129 air miles from Charlotte, I don’t think there can be an instant veto.
I should’ve said marketing rights and not territorial rights. Technically it’s two separate things, marketing rights extend up to 150 miles.
It’s cool, I think the idea of a team moving that close is far fetched anyway. Doesn’t make sense to be that close unless you’re talking a huge market, like NYC or L.A.

IMO Kansas City is far and away the real threat here. Purpose built stadium, red state, political desire for a team, metro slightly less populous but growing faster than Portland.
Look what the NBA did to Seattle. They allowed the team to move to a much smaller market, they vetoed another team for moving there and now they’re about to “sell” the Seattle market for $6-8b. They will allow the trailblazers to move to a lessor market and later in the future “sell” the Portland market again.
I mean this is how your flair happened, the Hornets moved and then two years later came the Bobcats, renaming to the hornets within a decade. We saw this in Cleveland with the Browns and Houston with the Texans.
I remember some thinking this would happen in Seattle, and the new sonics were only a few years away. And now they have been waiting nearly 20 years.
That move was to send a message to other markets about publicly funding arenas. Seattle and the State of Washington wouldn’t play ball and we were made an example of.
Portland is completely willing to hand over the money to Dundon. He just doesn’t want there to be any conditions on the money. Letting them move doesn’t really make sense in the way that moving the Sonics made sense.
KC has a 20 year old arena and just let the chiefs walk to Kansas but will be paying $600m to move the royals to downtown. We already have two cheap sports teams owners, we dont want an NBA team with a cheap owner that bad.

The NBA has never left an incumbent NBA city when 100% public subsidy is passed.
Also both the Grizzlies and Pelicans are negotiating leases that run out in 2029. Those ownership groups would LOVE the terms and opportunity currently being offered by the City of Portland.

As a resident of the city for 22 years, Portland without the Blazers is still a beautiful and vibrant town with amazing food, incredible nature, and a thriving music and arts scene.
While it would hurt both our hearts and economically, the city would pull through. We always do. We’re building back up after a few down years, and in 3.5 years when dumdum could move the team, the Stumptown will be in an ever better spot and will likely be able to absorb the huge financial blow.
Sporting-wise we still have the most successful American women’s soccer team ever in the Thorns, a middling but beloved men’s soccer team in the Timbers, our quirky Pickles (and Cherry Bombs, and Bangers), the scrappy and long-standing Winterhawks, plus we’d continue our basketball fix with the surprising and loveable Fire. Add the Cascade and Hops out in the burbs too as well as UP and PSU.
I would be heartbroken if the Blazers left, but to say they’re all that Portland has going for it is a slap in the face to all who make this city so wonderful.

Silver’s response was: “I was hoping more progress would’ve been made by now on that agreement, and it seems to have gone off track in various ways. I have a colleague who’s day-to-day on it, but we are working with both sides to ensure the Trail Blazers can have a long-term future in Portland. But there are several open issues that still need to be resolved.”
What about that response makes him think Silver “doesnt care about Portland”? I expect better from Simmons, not just following the hysterical fan speculation. Silver is not purely money driven if you listen to any interview with him, he wants to ensure the long term health of the game which means reaching young people. The money that has come in is just the naturally changing environment that affects all sports leagues, not something Silver has personally sought.
It’s impossible to turn down the streamers throwing tens of billions at you, and viewership went up massively last year cos a lot of people do have Amazon Prime. It’s more expensive to watch all 82 games now so hardcore fans are complaining, but there are more freely airing games than ever as well which reaches the younger audience and yes, highlights are free almost instantly after games which makes it a very easy sport to follow, so there’s a good balance.
Portlan has all the problems of a large metropolis (high crime rate, high cost of living, huge homeless population) while being out in the middle of nowhere. It’s also one of the whitest cities in the country and the population is declining. Are people actually surprised Blazers ownership wants to leave?

The bad person stuff probably comes from making his money off of predatory loans that caused him to be sued for harmful practices, or when he caused the total collapse of the Alliance of American Football, putting hundreds of people out of work then being dishonest in court about what happened to 250 million dollars in funding.
Because it usually ends with the city/taxpayers paying for most of the arena and the billionaire profits massively from it. I’d be mad if my property taxes went up $300 a month so a billionaire that owns a team can pocket a few million a month. Fantastic system we’ve got, I love trickle up economics.
The taxpayers are also profiting massively from it, you act like only 1 side benefits. The economic returns from the \(573m investment are massive (over the 20 year lease Oregon generates about \)360m in taxes just from the players’ salaries), hence why there’s been little debate about whether the city/state will pay. More it’s about squeezing as much public good as they can from the lease, without insulting the team so much that they’ll relocate just to not feel like a sucker.

The resolution you’re seeking is unreasonable. You can’t simultaneously say “I don’t want to pay for the arena” and “I don’t want the owner to be allowed to move the team”.
If another city wants a team badly enough to pay for an area he should be allowed to move it there.
It’s actually not unreasonable, plenty of owners have been pressured into paying up. And that’s what people are trying to do here. Public shaming goes a long way.

The blazers won an NBA championship 11 years before the Charlotte Hornets even existed. They have made it to the post season 38 times - which is more than half the number of seasons they have played (compared to the hornets only getting there 10 times in their less than storied franchise history). That includes just last season – yet another season where the hornets didn’t win enough to get there. So I guess if the blazers have a current identity - it involves at least being better then the Charlotte Hornets. Which isn’t much of a claim as most of the NBA share that identity.
Why are you so hyperfixated on the hornets? That was a simple allusion, not the defining example of what Portland should be like. I literally said the Hornets were a mediocre team for their entire existence you moron.

In the finals multiple times, won a chip, made playoffs something like 19 years in a row, sold out arena for like two decades, consistently middle of the pack in yearly profits (higher than teams with better markets), multiple hall of fame players, but yeah, “mediocre”. There’s about ten teams or more in the league that are more “mediocre” than Portland.
