Pretty soon though my niece started crying, and I’m trying to quiet her down because I didn’t want her to bother James, but she wouldn’t stop. Pretty soon he gets up and walks over. He started running his hands through her hair and asking what was wrong. I replied that she was probably hungry or something. So, James put down his magazine, picked up my niece and lifted his shirt. He breast fed her right there in the middle of a hair salon. Chill guy, really nice about it.

Houston spent his entire prime ducking the luxury tax. His final year, they told him to go compete with Stephen Silas, John Wall, Boogie Cousins, and Christian Wood while the owner saved money. He turned down an extension that would’ve made him the highest paid player in the NBA so he could be traded easier. Even while requesting a trade he played on an ankle injury.
Brooklyn had the Kyrie incident but they ALSO rushed him back after he played 3 playoff games on a torn hamstring including all 53 mins of the OT game 7.. and instead of load managing after a short offseason due to the covid scheduling, they immediately had him suiting up for b2bs and heavy minutes.. he was getting blamed more for the Nets struggles than Kyrie who was AWOL.
Philly he took a paycut but was promised an extension. Then they didn’t want to commit to him after promising him one. Morey is a (fired) liar etcetc

Accurate on every take. Go back and compare the luxury taxes between the Warriors and Rockets. The Warriors had the highest payroll in the league by far and were gladly paying the luxury tax, meanwhile Houston were being cheapskates.
I mean sixers and clippers literally were the same still second or first round exits. And it’s not only that said teams gave up draft capital to get him and ultimately ended up being worse for wear. Thats the main issue.

A lot of people know he left because of the money.
Some of those people know the money was tight because OKC had instead given big paychecks to role players like Kendrick Perkins (who was salary dumped 2.5 seasons later).
Very few people seem to know that Harden said he was okay taking a paycut, as long as he got to start moving forward. OKC said no because they liked Thabo Sefolosha in that starting lineup (who then left 2 years later in a sign-and-trade where they got nothing in return).
They didn’t just let Harden go because of the money, they let him go because of 2 role-players they didn’t particularly care about.
Harden was All-NBA for 7 of the next 8 seasons and would have 5 top 3 MVP finishes (tying Kobe, Duncan and Shaq).
I mean they were both role players they needed. OKC needed a center to put up against the likes of Duncan, Howard or Bynum and they have tried to find someone better/cheaper to no avail. Going smaller with Ibaka at 5 and KD at 4 was also only a limited option, mainly because the 3pt explosion only happened after the trade.
Same for Thabo, he made the All Defensive 2nd Team and was there for defensive purposes, so they kept Harden as an offensive option on the bench.
Those two then got traded because OKC was able to replace them with better and younger players in Adams and Roberson, both from the 2013 draft.
Yeah, I think the point is you don’t prioritize two pretty easily replaceable role players over a burgeoning star.
Well with the same prototype, so Harden wouldve still come off the bench. The general idea was they needed to improve their defensive side, while Russ and KD could carry the starters offensively and Harden would take over from the bench.

Sure there may have been some tension in the relationship, but I think the biggest problem was simply that Harden did not believe CP3 was capable of being a co-star anymore — which was a belief held almost league wide at that point.

Hell even teams that win it all have people clowning them and saying they only won the title because of how the playoff slate shook up. The ‘23 Nuggets and ‘24 Celtics come to mind.

A far more talented team won two basketball games. “Up big” against maybe the best shooting team in history is not so big at all. Those leads were nothing in this era, especially with that talent discrepancy. The injury ruined their chances because even if they won cp3 was still done for the year. Lebron would have dropped his nuts heavy in the finals getting an injured rockets instead of that juggernaut literally no one else came close to beating when they were healthy.

Defense was not his problem at his peak. He was a plus defender for years(the season before his MVP season through his time in Brooklyn, but especially before his injury). The reason the team stalled in his MVP season and the season after was not due to Harden’s play, it was the rest of the team playing like shit in the playoffs, and in Brooklyn they were going to the Finals if he and Kyrie didn’t go down.
Anytime I see a person criticize Harden for his defense I know instantly they either haven’t watched him since 2015 or they only started watching him the past two seasons since his agility and speed have gone down.
Harden was at best just an okay to decent defender throughout his prime but he spent large portions of is first years in Houston being a terrible defender, that reputation is hard to wash off because it was based on effort. He gave more effort, but let’s not act like it still wasn’t an issue. Sometimes he still didn’t give effort due to the amount of energy expended on the offense. It was just an acceptable trade off because he was in another stratosphere as a scorer compared to everyone else.
Harden was more than just a decent defender in his prime. When we started switching everything h he genuinely became a good defender. He would start and end possessions on the opposing teams best player, force turnovers, and he had the best rating for post defense I. The league for like 3 years straight(and he was actually defending bigs because how we switched everything).
I agree with most of this, but “as a scorer” is kinda underselling him, imo. He was in another stratosphere as an offensive player, period.
