Bam scoring 83 makes the 100 from Wilt not so crazy to believe 

I’ve always kinda laughed at the people who don’t believe the 100 point game. It’s not even the craziest Wilt stat imo, dude averaged 48.5 minutes per game in his 50 point season.

Honestly, the one I find hard to believe is the playing 48.5 minutes/season in Chuck Taylors.

Not believing well documented facts is a form of entertainment for some people.

After Bam scoring 83 last season I’m not sure how anyone doesn’t believe Wilt scoring 100 against literal plumbers.

I always get caught wondering how Wilt, and Bill got their rebounds per game numbers. I’ve seen guys grab 30 rebounds a game in present day, I remember Rodman grabbing tons of boards.  But to average 25 a game several times, grabbing 50 in one game seems more crazy to me than scoring that many points in a game. 

Not sure I’ve ever heard of anyone saying it didn’t happen. More that if film of it actually did come out it would be very underwhelming how it happened with the intentional fouling

Bam had pretty what happened with Wilt happen last season just to a lesser degree. They started the 100 point game with the idea they were just gonna let Wilt score every time to see how many he could get.

Idk I think many people also question him having a 50inch vertical and bench pressing over 600lbs.

People are just naturally doubtful of a lot of things. Most of em so that they’ll look smart to themselves, hence the widespread of conspiracies.

It unironically comes from the rise of people believing in conspiracy theories more than ever before. Some people saying it as a joke and it somehow morphed into an actual thing, rosin of trust, yada yada, and a lot of people are just morons.

After Covid I am no longer shocked by what people choose to believe.

Wilt scoring 100 is actually completely plausible. He averaged 50. If Dame averaging 30 can score 70 then Wilt sure as hell could score 100.

People forget back then goaltending wasn’t a thing so he could grab his teammates’ shots and drop them in. Also iirc his teammates fed him the ball towards the end of game just like Bam’s did for his 83.

Because you can’t find footage of the game like you can all the other scoring records

Fear not! There’s plenty of stuff that people say about Wilt that I don’t believe. 

I mean, Lisa Leslie score over 100 in the first half of a Hs game, so wilt is totally believable.

Every time there’s a video posted on Twitter about something from 100+ years ago whether it’s basketball or sports related or not someone will mention Wilt’s 100 point game, it’s always hilarious to me. 

A large percentage of the push to not beleive in wilt’s 100 was people wanting Kobe to have the top scoring game of all time

It’s hard to believe something if there’s not visual proof of it…and there’s not of this game due to the NBA not televising all their games until the mid 80’s AND also if games were televised there being a great chance they could have been dubbed over….

SO, you hear about the 100 point game but there’s not really audio record of it. There’s not visual record of it. It’s just “there” in the box scores. There’s been interviews though and they all align: Wilt was selfish as fuck the moment he found out he had a shot and it became a back-and-forth fest of fouling him. It was only fun for those who knew about the history that could be made. It happened, but at what cost? It wasn’t that fun to watch. I contend watching a 50 point game is more entertaining as defenses don’t make it seem like a battle on the court vs “he’s getting his but we can still get ours”

Conspiracy theorists focus on that specific record because 1) number big and 2) fixating on anything beyond the most famous record would require additional brainpower

A lot of it has to do with the fact that the game ended with an astronomical score in regulation, and, apparently, the entire 4th quarter was a sham to ensure Wilt got there, but it happened. For reference, a lot of people at the time claimed the 100 point game was a stunt orchestrated by the league. The discussion amongst fans/other teams at the time was that the 100 point game was some Mickey Mouse shit. Not too far off from how we viewed Bam’s performance tbh.

The most improbable part of the record game is that he went ²⁸⁄₃₂ on free throws. He shot 61% from FT that year, by far a career high, with a career rate of 51.1% The odds of a 61% FT shooter hitting 28 (or more) out of 32 is about 0.2%, a 51% shooter is 0.05%. So not in the “so statistically improbable as to be unbelievable” realm, but unusual.

Interestingly, the three games before his record-setting night he went ¹⁷⁄₂₂, ¹⁵⁄₂₀, and ¹³⁄₁₇, before finishing the last 4 games of the year going ²⁴⁄₅₀. He also had a 10 game stretch in January where he went ¹¹²⁄₁₅₇, for a 71.3% rate. He was just super streaky and inconsistent, with 22 games shooting better than 70% from the line and 13 games shooting 50% or worse.

I think it’s a basic function of contempt for the past that seems like a subset of Dunning-Kruger. Like people today have trouble believing that on average people were more intelligent in the Victorian age even though they didn’t have iPhones.
