Kukoc actually hit 3 game winners that season. He drew that play up because he had already seen Kukoc do it multiple times in the regular season. Nothing to do with Scottie missing as Kukoc was already making game winners prior to this. Look up his game winner versus the Pacers in that same 1994 season from January 1994, and you’ll see it to be very similar to the Knicks one.

1993-94 was an interesting pivot point in flagrant foul & fighting history. The flagrant had been re-introduced with new guidelines in 1990 but it was still a far cry from how its interpreted today.
For instance, in the playoffs later that season, Danny Manning committed two flagrant fouls in three minutes and still stayed in the game so there was still some loose ends there. That sequence then led to one of the biggest playoff brawls in modern NBA history.
Then a week or so later, the Bulls & Knicks had a massive brawl that poured into the crowd with David Stern in attendance.
I think all of that (including plays like KJ’s) led to the league going back to the drawing board that offseason and adding some additional bylaws (the increased punishment for leaving the bench in a fight, automatic ejection for multiple flagrants, etc.). I even remember a period of time where the league enforced a strict rim-hanging rule in the mid-‘90s in a broad attempt to cut down on what they interpreted as taunting or escalatory tactics.
How did nobody go to bat for Kerr here, KJ would have been immediately mobbed if this happened in the current NBA.
I think there was just a different threshold in many cases back then. Throwing an elbow, punch, or other fighting motion would still potentially induce a brawl but oftentimes hard fouls themselves—especially if they were in the midst of someone technically trying to make a play and not just intentionally injure someone—were just sort of taken for what they were.

In the case of KJ, he was technically going for something there, he just butchered the execution. His team was up three with seconds remaining and back then, fouling a 3-point shooter was still just two free throws. So he was going for the “whatever you do, do not like Kerr get a shot off” approach and overdid it. The Bulls likely knew it wasn’t any kind of hit job; plus they were going to benefit from the flagrant designation.
That one of MJ being dropped on his side is one that many Bron fans have used a still image of MJ on the floor and said “MJ flopped”. They just post that image and 3 others and all 4 of them…the video clearly shows a hard foul.
In fact, one of them MJ landed on his head and may have had concussion.

In the Philippines, it’s an automatic 3 mins benching when anyone commits a flagrant foul. Hockey gives 2 mins penalty just for taunting. I’ve been waiting for these in the NBA since 05

Man, sometimes the strict penalties for leaving the bench during a fight seem excessive, and then you see clips like these and are reminded why they’re necessary. Total chaos when the benches clear.

That’s probably why the Bulls didn’t charge at KJ and brawl. KJ tried to make a regular foul and then realized his mistake in the air or as he was landing.
Even by the standards of the 90s, that was an idiotic decision by Johnson due to the free throws. That could’ve easily tipped the game for the Bulls.

That’s just how it was. Look at clips of the pistons. I’m glad it’s different now and the players today are fantastic, but you have to respect how tough it was in the past.

He wasn’t healthy all season. 1992-93 (1993) was his worst season between 1989-1997. He didn’t play his normal self in the postseason either and he was a playoff riser.

The threat of this if you came into the paint was the reason why a lot of guys were jump shooters or 3PT shooters back in the ‘90s or early 2000s, because they were unspokenly scared of contact. That’s what made smaller guys like AI and Kevin Johnson himself special, their willingness to go at the rim hard regardless.

I feel like back in the day, everybody just played on unless the hard foul was committed by an enforcer, dirty player, or a guy who had some history with someone on the team. Johnson doesn’t really fit in any of those categories.
Nah, standards were just a bit different back then. Plus, with the game on the line with just seconds remaining, Johnson technically had a plan but just executed it poorly (i.e. preventing the three from a great shooter by any means possible so he’d have to shoot two free throws instead, per the rules of the time).
Of course, fights and retaliation definitely still happened, but there were also times where you just took your lumps, so to speak.
