One of the greatest calls of all time: “We Just Saw a Man Fly”
JR’s highlight reel would make you think he’s top 75 of all time
Makes me think he probably could have been if he had the mental fortitude for it. But JR’s gonna JR
Seems a lot more mature after getting his college degree.
Makes you wonder if finishing degree ahead of entering the nba could’ve made him a better player.
I think that’s why players should’ve received compensations by colleges way sooner.
Age is probably a way bigger factor. I know plenty of ppl that have a college degree but lack maturity and mental fortitude
I hope Yaxel does well. Not just because I’m a Warriors fan, but because we should normalize kids finishing college before declaring for draft. Don’t stop kids from declaring early, but they shouldn’t be punished for wanting to finish school either.
Yeah its just age, but really life experience… Nothing about going to college and making millions while there is going to mature you. College matures you when you arrive broke with no family money and have to work part time while you go to school and figure out how to be independent and take care of yourself.
And this is an increasingly smaller potion of college kids. Colleges have slowly become 4 year day cares though, so idk how grown up kids are coming out anymore
What? lol that’s not it, it’s not about compensation (see all the dumbasses currently getting compensation in the league). It’s about working towards something you weren’t already the best at from a young age.
He also seems a lot less high now
I don’t think getting the degree itself is some magical mark of maturity. JR going back to finish the degree in the first place demonstrates a certain level of maturity on his part already; it’s more likely that he gained some level of perspective through his lived experiences, and to some lesser extent, age.
100% agree. he’s 40 years old and not exactly in the limelight anymore. becomes a lot easier to settle down and mature when life naturally quiets down, speaking from experience haha.
Iman shumpert had a really great way of explaining jr smith. He grew up in front of everyone. How would you have done if you had to grow up with no help in front of the world?
Makes you appreciate LeBron just a tiny bit more
A whole lot more.
ma said it was my turn to post this comment
Love him or hate him, JR’s gotta have one of the best highlight reels in the NBA
Who tf hates JR Smith?
He lost a lot of games for his teams by shooting under 25% on high volumes. He could certainly heat up and win games for his team, but not nearly as often as he shot his team out of a game. Hate is a strong word but a lot of fans didn’t cry when he left town.
Jr Smith was the prime example of a hot and cold player
Sounds like the life of normal roleplayer to me
He pled guilty to reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter in 2009
Then was cited again for reckless driving in 2017
So do me a favor and go back to the Google search you pulled that from and look what actually happened.
“On June 9, 2007, in New Jersey, Smith was driving his SUV at 67 mph in a 35 mph zone. He ran through a stop sign and crashed into another car. His close friend and passenger, 21-year-old Andre Bell, suffered severe head trauma and died two days later.”
Ok, I got this result after searching Google. Seems pretty clear to me that there are reasons for people to dislike him. What’s your point?
The guy that flew trough the windows didn’t have a seat belt on. Thats what you’re leaving out. Technically the driver is guilty of that but the man who died was also responsible for wearing a seat belt.
So it has nothing to do with him driving at 67mph on a 35 residential zone? Maybe - just maybe - his friend wouldn’t have flown through the window if JR was under the speed limit and crossed a stop light..?
Did I say that? Also at 35mph you will still go flying trough the windows when you don’t wear a seat belt. Sure what happened is fucked up but he served his time after pleading guilty and that shit never happened again. To hate him for something that happened 17 years ago is just holding a grudge for no reason.
Passenger safety is on the driver. JR Smith should never have started driving without making his passenger buckle up. If the passenger refuses kick him out of the vehicle. On top of that if he had stopped at the stop sign the accident wouldn’t have happened. And if JR Smith was going 35 instead of 67 the accident may have been survivable. Be fucking serious.
I agree but that didn’t happen. That man was a grown ass man. JR is not his babysitter. Sure he’s responsible and it’s why he pleaded guilty and served the punishment. But to me if you served your sentence it’s stupid to hold it against someone unless it’s a sexual related crime. So to hate someone 17 years later when that shit didn’t happen again is fucking stupid.
And if JR Smith was going 35 instead of 67 the accident may have been survivable
I mean the man died days later so he survived the accident itself. Hence why JR didn’t go to prison for longer. Also 35 mph is still more than enough to send someone trough the windshield. Be fucking serious.
Drove almost double the speed limit and crashed into another car, killing a man
and that shit never happened again
Literally got cited for reckless driving 10 years later
And it was never reported how much he went over the speed limit. Can’t judge someone over something you dont know can you?
I certainly hated him for a bit after this.
They put this exact animation into 2k, it would initiate from just inside the 3 point line. OJ Mayo seemed to do it just as much. Drawing fouls, reinventing the wheel
Ima sound old but dude would get CRAZY heat in gdts during that Cavs run before their chip, and it went even crazier after that rebound at the end of game 1. Tbf I think most of it came from fans just being annoyed with his shot selection lmao. But the man himself said it was easier for him to shoot wit a hand in his face so 🤷♂️
This is why old heads says JR was too5 player in old 2ks.
Dude was MJ lol. Use to take out Melo and put in JR in 2k8
LBJ
Hates him so much he brought him to the Lakers for a free ring.
T-shirts
There’s a real dichotomy in this play and the only play I remember him for
There’s an alley oop one handed reverse dunk in a Knicks uniform. And also a perfect 360 layup that kept going
Also him and Shump’s double oop is one of the coolest things ever.
AHM SORRY AMMA NEED LINKS TO ALLA DEEZ
His behind the back dunk in the dunk contest is one of my favourite dunks. Lavine is definitely smoother but I saw JRs first and it’s always stuck with me
Freak of an athlete
There’s a commonality too - here, he’s dunking over George Hill.
In the other JR Smith play, Hill was on his team, and it was his missed FT that JR rebounded before dribbling out the clock.
If JR takes and misses that shot and they go on to lose in OT the same way they actually did, George Hill would’ve been blamed for the loss. So JR kinda got him back for this poster with his decision there
Nice story and would have been cool, but he dunked on Gary Neal. Dont ever listen to Reggie.
He was actually a very good player
I immediately thought of the other play when I saw his name
Him and Danny Green were on fire to start that series.
It’s literally not in Carmelo’s DNA to celebrate for a team mate lmfao
Since Harrington is on the team, this was likely the season he was demanding a trade to the Knicks. Salty ass
I’ve never seen Melo be happy for a team mate
Portland Melo was the best version of Melo in regards to supporting the team.
Kevin Harlan is a national treasure
The best
“No, Kevin you’re not in danger. All I’m saying is that if Nicholas Cage invites you to dinner, don’t go.”
What’s up with Mello, lol. Not even excited for his teammate.
Jelly that someone else is getting attention. Dude is cancer with a headband.
You see those 2pts? They could have been his 2pts.
Carmelo: “they should be cheering for me”
his teamates can’t celebrate too much😂
Remember when Gary Neal went crazy during game 3 of the 2013 nba finals?
Carmelo annoyed as usual by a team player stealing his limelight.
he was just calculating how many jab steps he could have fit into that airtime
If this happened today I feel like that Melo reaction would be clipped as a meme fairly quickly
I know we clown JR for the 2018 finals but he was so important to the 2016 win too
Man had some hops
JR was one of the greatest dunkers ever, i will die on this hill.
This and the “What are you doing Dragic”-drose clip are my favourites of the dunking with great commentary genre.
drose clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRAp00SxP30
Derrick Rose can go upstairs! I wanna go HIGHER!
RIP Stacey King
My personal favorite is “Jeremy Evans touches the heavens”.

Melo so pissed someone else in the spotlight. How’s he not hype after that?
That was clean and nasty!! Superman dunk 🤯
Melo is allergic to being happy for someone else lmao
Miss the gold and light blue Nugs era.
My favorite player to watch when hot and the greatest 2k player of all time
JR swish baby
The shoes, the shoes, it’s gotta be the shoes…
udoka out there lookin like he’s wavin those airport runway sticks towards the hoop
Melo looking all jelly that someone else is getting attention
And of course Reggie Miller fucks it up.
THE WORST
I thought it was impossible to dislike Carmelo Anthony more than what i already do…
Life is truly a box of surprises 😮
Why did Melo look kinda irritated 🤣
He’s the only guy I can think of that prefers to jump off the same foot as his dominant hand
And he jumped well, too
Crazy part is the call still gives me chills even in 240p. Modern broadcasts need that level of pure chaos.
That hornets team he was on with young CP3, David west and bird man was so fun.
Can someone explain why that’s not a foul? Did he plant himself too late to try to draw a charge?
Foot may have been in the restricted area and he planted his feet too late. That’s my guess.
The cool rule.
Bro was in the air before Hill got set
Gary Neal
Whenever one of Melo’s teammates does he well he looks pissed lol.
Garnett quoted this in the Nba2k commercial after lol JR has a great highlight reel.
that windmill from the baseline dunk contest still lives in my head rent free, but honestly his whole career was just elite athleticism mixed with the worst shot selection you’ll ever see. the man could go from a top 5 poster to a contested 30 footer in the same quarter, absolute chaos and I loved every second of it
Earl Joseph did things in the basketball court that makes you scream.
It took terminal illness for craig sager (who I understand was maybe a POS person) to work the finals.
I hope the powers that be can allow Kevin Harlan to do it without that.
Suck it Ime
For some reason I always forget that JR could Get Up. Insane dunk
And he had extra room so he could have taken off a foot earlier.
I know I’m being pedantic, but he said, “We just saw man fly,” which I think sounds way fucking cooler.
I bought a pair of 11s after this
Reggie Miller thinking he actually dunked on George Hill instead of Gary Neal is foul
Udoka with the fantastic on-ball perimeter defense on JR. One would say, “Horrendous mistakes, I don’t know if you want to say youth or scared of the moment.”
JR is one of my all time favorite players and I don’t care what anyone thinks of me for it.
will always love Melo’s reaction lol
Man, Melo can never be happy for a teammate unless it’s him having the spotlight lol
one of my favorite dunks of all time
Cool Grey XI’s
Imagine if jr wasn’t a slow developing weed head
My goat
Still think this should’ve been a charge
One of the best non-calls ever for rim hanging. Was a pretty egregious hang, but he had so much momentum, and a player under him, that letting go at the normal time could’ve gone real badly
Meh
Nothing will compare to tom chambers dunk over mark jackson.
Ok…
We just saw a man fly. 10 out of 10.
Ride’m cowboy…we can all agree is a little weird, right?
Don’t you dare kink shame Kevin Harlan
dude had his feet set outside the half circle, that shoulda been a charge if it wasn’t such a sick play and at home !
His heel was on the line , not a charge .
He’s also still getting into position after JR has left the ground
I agree. Was way too late for the charge.
00:31 says otherwise
No 00:31 says 00:31
For whatever good looking dunk it is, that’s clearly an offensive foul because it’s outside the arc.
I do believe his left foot is on the line. Gotta respect Hill for stepping into that though.
I think he didn’t put his foot down until Smith had started his upward motion, leaving the defender in a non-legal guarding position to take the charge.
