[WPRI] Rhode Island Governor calls on Rhode Island FC to disclose all investors after Kawhi Leonard revelation: “We got sucked into an NBA problem” - RIFC owner Brett Johnson refuses
Gov. Dan McKee on WPRO radio Friday:
“I think that Brett Johnson and the team should, at this point, disclose everything that they have… We got sucked into an NBA problem. I’m not comfortable with the fact that somehow there’s a cloud over our state… Let the NBA deal with Kawhi Leonard and his agents.”
Johnson’s response, doubling down on secrecy:
“Rhode Island FC respects the privacy and confidentiality of its investors and does not publicly disclose individual holdings unless investors choose to do so themselves. This is consistent with common practice among privately held sports organizations.”
Buried detail: Johnson also says neither he, RIFC, nor anyone at Fortuitous Partners “has been contacted by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz” - the firm running the NBA’s investigation - in the ~11 months since it was hired.
Context: McKee cast the tie-breaking 2022 vote that redirected \(27M in taxpayer-backed bonds from housing to the stadium; Rhode Islanders will repay \~\)116M over 30 years. A Target 12 / Pablo Torre Finds Out / Hunterbrook investigation revealed this week that Kawhi Leonard, his uncle Dennis Robertson, and former agent Mitch Frankel are long-hidden RIFC investors.
