Jaylen isn’t stupid, but much of the genius narrative around him is exaggerated.

He was part of the MIT Media Lab’s Director’s Fellows program, which is an honorary role given to artists, activists, and public figures to promote interdisciplinary dialogue. It’s more about being part of a community of thought leaders than holding an academic or technical position. Still cool, but not what people usually think when they hear “MIT Fellow.”

“Youngest to speak at Harvard” is almost certainly false — Harvard’s hosted plenty of child prodigies and teen speakers. And even the idea that Jaylen Brown gave a lecture at Harvard is a bit misleading. It wasn’t a formal academic lecture — he participated in a public talk at the Graduate School of Education about race, activism, and being an athlete. Impressive, yes, but not some exclusive professorial role or groundbreaking lecture series.

The NASA internship claim is plausible but unconfirmed — likely a high school program, not a formal engineering role.

On the flip side, this guy was quietly anti-vax, claimed he was “undecided” on the flat Earth stuff (I guess that NASA internship didn’t help), stood by his Kanye partnership until the company folded, “accidentally” supported an antisemitic hate group — then doubled down by aggressively defending Kyrie’s antisemitism. He was asked about investing in an MSNBC interview and said he planned to learn more about crypto and weed stocks. He also spent a month promoting some sketchy shit coin on his social accounts (which may have been hacked, but he never acknowledged that or deleted the posts), and during our entire Finals run, he was actively pushing a woo-woo snake oil necklace that supposedly uses magical magnets and a phone app to control your mood.

He’s got a long history of saying things that sound surface level smart until you actually think about it. Like last season during Media Day they let Bill Nye ask him a question about what he’d change in the NBA and he said, “I think to this day we still use a pig skin as a basketball and I actually pushed a few years back to make the ball more sustainable. I had an idea that I proposed, I think, even to Boston … Proposed a basketball made of recycled materials of trash in Boston, so it’s like you could have a ball that’s made from the essence of your environment, but it’s all sustainable. I think it got turned down.” Surface level that sounds like a thoughtful and intelligent response, but like… these eco-friendly recycled material balls already exist and can be bought anywhere. The NBA famously tried using synthetic balls 20 years ago and everyone hated them. And the current balls are cow hide leather, not pig skin, but whatever. Lots of little examples like that.

Thats way too much for an internet comment. I also swear my phone autocorrect was better like 3 or 4 years ago, then it stopped adding apostrophes and actually had wrong words
