With FIBA comes less scoring, basically. No 3 second, getting to play the rim, and to my knowledge the dribbling / step rules are more tightly officiated - I recall videos of US players asking refs or coaches in training if this is a travel or not.

For the less scoring reason, I’m doubtful it gets entertained in a real way. And yeah Wemby would be absolutely broken, Rudy too but he’s obviously aging anyway.

Bruce Bowen wasn’t notorious for overfouling though. He was notorious for borderline dirty plays. Those are distinct things.

By overfouling, I mean the Thunder have made the strategic choice that they’re willing to toe the line on fouling a lot in order to force more turnovers. That’s why they were 6th in fouls committed in 2024-25… but were all-time greats at forcing turnovers.

Meanwhile the Bowen/Duncan Spurs had the opposite strategy and tend to avoid fouling. even if they force less turnovers as a result. During Bowen’s career the Spurs were consistently bottom-10 in fouls per game… but were never top-10 in turnovers forced. So yeah, saying those Spurs teams pioneered overfouling doesn’t make any sense.

The biggest problem with NBA playoffs right now is how the reffing is handled. Tony Brothers is a g’damn basket terrorist with the whistle. I FULLY recognize (and acknowledged at the time) that Brothers was BLATANTLY attempting to tilt the game towards the Spurs in Game 2 Finals, and I f’ing hated it because he ended up hurting the Spurs - they let the inconsistency get into their heads while the Knicks kept an even keel. Ironically, Scott Foster was one of the best and most even whistles this last Finals.

In regards to OKC, they openly advocate the “the refs can’t call everything” philosophy, and just foul constantly. As an opponent, you absolutely HAVE to respond with like, or you just get beat. Castle plays aggressive D, but not like Caruso or Dort do, where they should foul out within 15 seconds of checking in if the refs were consistent. Castle gets his body in there, but all that grabbing and holding they were letting go in the Finals is NOT part of his normal game - he did zero of that until the OKC series.

Bottom line, that shit hurts the Spurs and Wemby WAY more than it helps. There was one sequence in Game 4 where the Spurs threw 3 straight lobs to Wemby, all good throws, and all three failed - because he got held, bumped, and fouled multiple times on all 3 plays. No calls, because the Spurs were up double digits at the time. On one, Brunson was literally hanging on Wemby’s left arm to keep him down and away from the lob. Anouby was hugging him on another to keep him from jumping. Mitchell Robinson grabbed his arms in the air on the third to keep him from catching it.

No whistles.

So, fuck no, dude. If that shit had been called cleanly and evenly, we’d have had a six game series, easy. I’m not claiming the Spurs would have won, because the Knicks just had a better closing game, period. But that should have gone six or seven games, and the NBA trying to lengthen it ended up shortening it.

Honestly, that Finals loss might be the best thing that could happen for Wemby. He’s only 22 — experiences like that are what turn great players into champions.Just look at Jordan before his first three-peat — those early playoff battles and failures were a huge part of what made him who he became. If he can stay healthy, a ring is coming.

And people forget how different FIBA basketball is. No defensive 3-second rule makes France’s size absolutely terrifying. Wemby, Gobert, and their frontcourt can make life miserable for anyone. Even Team USA wouldn’t just walk in and dominate. Can’t wait for the next FIBA run.

Since USA is so dominate I don’t think you’d ever get the passion and commitment in the states but every foreign player is happier playing for their country then their NBA team and would do literally everything to win an Olympic Gold for their country. They’d rate it higher than winning an NBA chip. A Gold for their county would basically be their World Cup( yes I know there is a FIBA World Cup but Olympics are definitely rated higher and is basically the closest comparison you can make in basketball to the FIFA World Cup)
