Red on Roundball: Dexterity and Dribbling with Calvin Murphy.
Back when your hand had to stay above the ball when dribbling.
Do people rly miss that? I don’t wanna get called for a carry on a regular crossover bro
It’s a nuanced thing so unfortunatley I think it’s just “sorta”.
I like the moves it opens up but it’s annoying how on almost every single dribble the hand goes to the side of the ball and it sticks there for a second. They’ll just be walking up the court with no pressure and they’re basically palming it once it hits their hand. It opens up creativity but it also makes things too safe for the dribbling player imo.
Sure, i think today they call it too loosely. But i don’t wanna go back to how it was called in the 60s and 70s lol. The ability to freeze defenders by putting like 1/3rd of your hand underneath the basketball and pausing before changing directions is a bit too op atm
I’m not saying it’s a good or a bad thing. I’m just saying players in different eras had to abide by different rules. That’s why players from the 70’s and 80’s look “trash” when they’re compared to guys now who can manipulate the ball in so many different ways. I’m glad the game evolved but I also appreciate what the OG’s could do with the limited freedom that they had.
Okay, no problem with that!
How should a carry be called?
It’s still in the rulebook, should be changed . There was no dribbling allowed at all when Dr Nesmith invented the game.
Uhhh Nesmith plays on Indy. Dr.Naismith invented The Game
Wow. I’ve never seen this before. Props to Murphy for engaging in twirling as a training tactic. A lot of other dudes would refuse because they’d be afraid of being seen as gay.
Got a lot of respect for it as a skill. I briefly dated a majorette in high school.
Wikipedia said he started twirling since the other members of his family, his mom and his six sisters, were also twirlers. He won a national championship when he was in the 8th grade (!?)
Apparently, he got the Texas State Mens championship in 1977. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq3pALijAWY&t=136s I think that’s his performance, which he himself wasn’t very happy with.
Great background info. Even more props to him for embracing it, assuming he liked it rather than just as a training tactic.
This is part of a whole series Red did. Highly recommend.
Murphy was not at all concerned with people questioning his masculinity. He was known as a dude who wouldn’t back down from anybody, and at least a bit infamous for punching a couple of dudes who were A LOT bigger.
Pretty much was the only guard who was the team’s enforcer back when every team had a guy who was an enforcer.
My Dad was an athlete in the 70’s-80’s and he said ballet was really popular for male athletes at the time.
Kareem did martial arts with Bruce Lee, and yoga. So I shouldn’t find this surprising.
Red was the greatest
Red really knew how to coach them up. “See you at 6a for workouts. And bring your baton!”
His handle is unreal, dribbling that way is very hard, requires a lot of finger and wrist strength.
Really great stuff. Two good personalities and informative for the youths. Always love how body control transfers from one thing to another, being a multisport or multitalented athlete shows the crossover of skill that goes between all physical sports.
Love to see Red being such a passionate advocate for the game, for people of all frames to get involved, celebrating the skill of a player from another team. Mandatory Fuck Boston but Red seems like an absolute dude
I wish we had more overarching grand figures in sports like Red Auerbach these times
Nowadays he would just keep coaching/gm-ing or be on a podcast or something
Pop always kept himself to the Spurs and had the stoke anyhow
Steve Kerr will probably do podcasting like Doc Rivers
It’s something I know on a logical level, that Red’s from Brooklyn but went north to coach
But damn man, that accent combined with the Celtics green is a hell of a combo
Ayyye. I was a twirler age 6-17. I was also a drummer. I’m now a tattoo artist, a manicurist, a fiber artist (embroider, crochet, knit, sewing), a watercolorist, and more.
He is really impressive. Even at my best, I could never go that fast. It’s so cool how athletes can pick up other sports so quickly.
Lol
Calvin was doing drills at a 3 on 3 tournament i was playing in as a kid. I knew a bunch of the rockets bc they would practice at my high school when the summit wasnt available. So he asked me to get him some water which i did. It was hot bc yeah. Houston in the summer. Anyways. The lady i got it from said the ice was gone. So i gave calvin the water and he took a slug. He made such a sour face! Then he said no ice? I just shrugged. Told him there wasnt any.
I will never forget that face lol. Sorry for the long story for such a small payoff.
