[Highlight] Trail Blazers’ 4th String PG, Scoot Henderson, Shows Off Insane Athelticism
I still got hope for Scoot
He’s definitely got the tools. Strong, super athletic, not positive but to me looks like he’s got a good wingspan, the tools are there to be an elite defensive pg at the very least. He just needs to improve his shot and the intangibles on offense
This athleticism doesn’t show up in games at all.
Yeah he plays small and is a below the rim athlete in the NBA
might be scared to go up
He had horrible footwork when he came into the league that made his finishing really bad. He’s not bouncy enough to go over dudes and he was taking off from too far away or getting his feet caught up. Looked a bit better last year
He looked pretty good at times in the series against the spurs.
Shouldn’t have flexed at Dylan though. That didn’t go well for him.
Oh man I was so bummed for him lol. Definitely a hard lesson learned, Dylan sonned him after that
He did have a good series though. Hope he puts it all together
Harper is what I wished Scoot would be for the Blazers…
that was my biggest takeaway too. he was billed as a Westbrook, Rose type athlete in the draft. But in the NBA he just looks like a good athlete, pretty quick, nowhere near the generational standout type burst that Westbrook and Rose had.
He’s quick, but nothing special nowhere near rose or Westbrook. While this dunk looks fairly good, he doesn’t show any vertical explosiveness or athleticism in games at all. I swear I can count on both my hands how many times he’s dunked in game in his career.
He also hasn’t figured out how to finish in traffic or even in 1v1 situations yet, which is very concerning. His footwork at the rim is awful.
someone like jrue holiday would be a good example for him to follow with that.
He’s a football player turned basketball. He doesn’t love the game either. He’s just not that good
Scoot doesn’t even look that much more athletic than current 38-year-old Westbrook, let alone prime Westbrook who was tearing down rims and posterizing big men at the rim lol
Who is Scott?
Mike Scottt ?
Autocorrect strikes again
NBA Xavier Worthy
scoot’s hops remind me of my brother’s crazy dunks
It’s why the NBA Combine is useless 95 percent of time. Westbrook had a 36.5 inch vertical and Reed Sheppard and all smaller guard have 40+
It’s about how long and much you can jump in a game. A lot of them can jump 40+ inches but can’t keep doing it. The true athletes got motors and can do it all game or IN the dam game.
Obviously the measurements aren’t totally useless, but I’m consistently shocked at how many explosive NBA athletes have good-not-great vertical metrics and how many guys have insane measured verticals but don’t pop off the screen athletically.
Most just train to jump high on 1 test in testing. Most can’t do it in actual live competition
can’t keep doing it
You make it sound like it is about stamina and motor, but that is not the difference between combine and in-game athletes IMO.
The difference is how athleticism translates outside of perfect conditions. Functional athleticism if you will. Guys like Westbrook can jump high even when off balance or from an awkward position, etc. There are lots of guys who can jump super high when they have a clean run up, but then they can’t get nearly as high if they don’t have one
True but Russell got that Motor and heart. My boy VJ Edgelord is similar. You can’t teach heart
For a guy that was getting D Rose comps before the draft… oof
This is the thing, he’s nowhere near this explosive in games. He’s mainly a jump shooter, and not an especially good one at that.
he’s explosive off the dribble. That little run where he got to start and had rope he looked like he can be a contributor
Hey he put up 30 in the playoffs against a very good San Antonio
Idk I thought he showed it vs the spurs on defense in the playoffs.
I just think he can’t finish at this speed and that’s why he’s had to play slower.
The key is learning how to have burst while slowing down at the rim.
That’s because the defenders are also NBA athletes.
hoping he’d at least be an Eric Bledsoe clone by now with his physical tools
Damn haven’t heard that name in a long time
6’9 wingspan at 6’3
He’s got a 6’9” wingspan. It’s huge for his height so he should be a good defender.
He’s not functionally athletic. Doesn’t look special against actual NBA competition.
He already performed well in the playoffs too. He hasn’t even scratched the surface yet (not that it’s a guarantee he ever will), but I’m rolling.
yeah, all he needs to do is learn to shoot and pass and not turn the ball over.
And finish
so he needs to learn basketball…?
The Wiseman Special, yeah
He shot way better down the stretch, hitting 40% from March on, 21 of his 30 GP.
I do hope he gets better. It just pisses me off we spent the #3 pick on a dude whose ceiling is backup PG
Match basketball should not be considered when evaluating a player.
He can shoot and pass- just sometimes they go into the 3rd row
Glad someone does. Want to trade for him?
I do too, until I go look at his stats. Then I get grounded real quick
He had a good 2nd half of the season and playoffs
He looked pretty good against the spurs until he disappeared
They left him open on purpose that game and changed game plan for the rest of the series
As a good backup point, yeah.
He showed a lot against the spurs in this most recent playoffs.
He couldn’t put it together for a whole series, but he had his moments. He’s probably not worth where they took him, but he could still be a decent player. He’s still very young and could figure it out.
I remember being so upset that we passed on Scoot to take Brandon Miller (after losing the Wemby lottery). That one clearly worked out in our favor
He’s younger than Yaxel Lendeborg, only a few months older than Derik Queen, and only like 20 months older than Brayden Burries, but Scoot already has 3 seasons in the NBA under his belt. He still has room to grow, and point guards take a little while to figure out the nuances of their game. If he picks up this season right where he finished last season and continues to grow, he will be alright
He has a clean jumper
If I was him I’d be requesting a trade - as the title says, he’s fourth on the depth chart behind Ja, Dame and Jrue.
Kinda difficult to find a fit for him though and because he was such a high draft pick salary match might be a bit tricky. I think Dallas especially would be a nice fit if they want to move on from Kyrie.
Did anyone come out of G-League Ignite with anything to offer?
Jalen Green, Kuminga, Buzelis
So no lmfao
Those aren’t complete bums. They’re all competent NBA players.
Buzelis has upside to be a low level all-star I think. Not saying he’ll get there for sure but its plausible
I think Jalen Green is better off embracing a 6MotY type role and link with a team that has a bench full of savvy defenders who will just let Green chuck.
so jordan clarkson. time for him to suit up for the philippines
Jalen could breakout this season IMO. He was hurt last year but has a new environment and someone to actually take pressure off him being the main scoring option.
He’s super talented, he just isn’t consistent at the slightest. Great guy and hard worker from all accounts, I’ll always root for him.
Buzelis is great, and Jalen Green got traded for KD, and the team that got Green got better.
Yeah i think people are a bit harsh on these guys.
Like sure Jalen Green didn’t turn out to be the second coming of Kobe but he’s not remotely a bust.
Kumminga is i guess still a NBA player that’s in the league, not great but not ass cheeks.
its reddit, they live in the binary. Jalen green by all accounts is a hard worker, still talented who can go off in any given game. he isn’t the superstar you can rely on but he’s a good nba player.
he seems to stay level headed and keep working, he must be surrounded by veterans.
Jalen Green’s problem is not himself alone, it’s the contract tied to him
agreed, he’ll be off that soon and he can help any team. Especially as a 6th man who can get hot and give you 30 + on a night he’s fealing it. He still is valuable, but yes not reliable at his contrat and as a starter. by all accounts great in the locker room and still 24. he’s 2 years off his college grad year, he can refine a lot
You mean the team that Green played for 27 times.
I know the jalen green bit is a joke, but like the sun’s were performing better without green playing which is kinda funny and makes the kd trade even funnier.
Oof
Leonard Miller
Jalen Green, Dyson Daniels, and Matas Buzelis are still good.
Daniels is good but he came into the league super raw and his jumper is still broken, so I wouldn’t say Ignite did him a lot of good lol
ignite didn’t really get a chance to execute right. Its sitll a better concept than college for a rare elite person. NCAA still tries to be an amateur program meaning they limit coaching access so they can’ goto class’ which most prospects not only never do, many programs just choose throw away classes for them. Then you are competing in practice daily with half guys who will never even aspire to be professionals. On top of all that you are playing a slower pace, more half court offense, more zones, and schemes you really won’t be prepared for the game
ignight had the right idea, the wrong execution but isn’t totally far off to continue to evolve and get more veteran coaches or players involves and totally commit. The talent, pace, physicality is all better than college with some of the lessons of being pro. For the very rare few that are just forced to goto college for a year it could’ve developed into a better option
In theory, but (top) college coaches are way more experienced and much better paid. I’d much rather send my kid to a big time program than some Ignite coach.
Regardless, NIL killed it anyway.
The NBA needed to invest 10 times as much money into Ignite for it to work. D1 basketball programs have invested billions into training infrastructure, facilities and coaching. You cant haphazardly slap together a minor league and pretend it matches what the NCAA offers high school players.
every d1 is different, not to mention they have limited coaching hours to keep the guise that it is an amateur sport. If you recall with uconn just a few years ago they had to update rules on even being fed properly under that same issue.
Even with NIL they protected the A.D and coaches from losing a dime, its still a billion dollar business with an image of amateur sports.
Its the standard quo but there are all sorts of inefficiences and easily improved on situations for the nba elite, being the few guys that are only forced to goto college because its now required for at least a year.
Those guys are not playing people daily, or coaching in an incentive to develop but to perform as hired guns for that year in a glorified summer camp. The nutrition, professionalism, professional battle, pace, actual style of play and game reps are all improved on in a pro league.
Yes they needed to invest more in the gleague, but it wasn’t far to improve on the college experience given the talent is already guys who have excelled in college, get a few more pros, strucutr,e they already had a degree program and finance classes. They need to create a platform or tournament but the money doesn’t need to be 10 times as much. For example the tournament that now is picked up by espn had just one million in prize money ,if you incentivize winning even at the tune of that given right now all it is people trying to showcase and get called up rather than win, its doable. they already have their own media network. It was barely in its infancy before it came out. But for the true nba prospects college is an inefficient route and it probably is not great for college to for one year hired guns
You simply do not understand the amount of money put into top programs. There are probably two dozen college programs with facilities closer to the NBA than anything the NBA could put together for a minor league. They would need to invest hundreds of millions into Ignite for a decade plus and the NBA just doesn’t have the resources or time.
Financial incentives are worthless because top D1 players are making significantly more than the non veteran minimum. College is better than ever for top prospects because they’re making rookie scale money out of high school.
The hill is impossible to climb for the NBA and the failures of most of the Ignite prospects just affirmed that.
I disagree, you have partnerships all over the NBA could tap into for resources and still provide more specific game approach development than college can for the chosen few. They’d have to work with their partners for media and exposure and that can scale up the investment significantly. Playing style matters, coaching incentives also matter, those are all things that will translate over and are not as far as the other parts you mention and can make up for a far more effecient route. Gleague already has better talent, more serious talent, and a more comparable opportunity to get nba Sets and pace than college can ever. Not to mention the coaches there are coaching not to develop, but to win now especially with a 1 and done. For those guys there is a window and I don’t think its as far or needs to be to where you are. Judging a program that was just getting off and the results by its first attempt vs someone who can see what it can develop into isn’t going to create anything new, but its not difficult to see the inefficiencies of the college opportunity for the nba cusp who are forced to go there and thats a very small few
Why would owners spend the hundreds of millions required for this when the feeder system is paid for by someone else?
find a way to market, monetize it using nba tv or another model, use a gleague 2ndary model, go via overtime elite. can use imagination and the media channels that are established to both platform these elite athletes going through the journey giving them great exposure, documentary style engaging fans on their journeys and personalities while also creating profit and investment. theres a variety of ways to do that and basketball wise for them not hard to beat what the ncaa provides to streamline it particularly for pro basketball
I dont think there are more than 3 good players to come out G league at all. Its only proven its better to go to college
Does that say more about the individual programs or the players that choose the path? That said yeah with NIL no one will do this shit anymore regardless
Considering like 1% of college players go to the NBA, you’d be better off going to Ignite.
Ignite doesn’t even exist anymore though.
The NBA shut them down 2 years ago because NIL was taking away their recruits. In their last season they went 2-32, and that was a team that even had 2 guys talented enough to later get drafted in the lottery with Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland…the rosters were going to continue to get worse as NIL money got even bigger.
That’s selection bias tho
objectively ignite is a better theory
College you have limited coaching access due to them ttrying to perceive that its amateur
they create the illusion of you choosing classes to goto
you practice with half a squad daily that have no pro aspirations/mindset
you play more half court set, slower pace, difference scheme from what you will deal with as a pro
Gleague wasn’t executed right, but for the select rare few who are basically forced one college year it makes sense to be surrounded by pros, play at an nba pace, focus on the craft and the talent and physicality in the gleauge is closer to the league than college and they can up the schedule too where in college its just 30 games
The Great Barrier Thief
Fred Vanvleet
Amen & Ausar Thompson
They didn’t play g league
OTE not ignite
Scoot will probably be the only one
Matas
Lil Buzi Vert
Buzelis
Matas Buzelis
Whoa, I have a similar body to Scoot with the exception of the muscles and abs and everything else.
I too, have arms and legs on my body
Damn that’s what I’m missing
have you tried building a new one?
I like Scoot, but he’s gonna have to ball out like crazy to not be in the Watson-Duren RFA Purgatory a year from now.
he has to ball out like crazy just to reach that lvl of purgatory
Yea if he doesn’t ball out he’s probably looking at MLE or less.
He should sign a short extension with Portland. No team is going to be as invested in him as they already are.
Teams don’t want to give up on their own #3 picks. As soon as that player goes to another team their draft position means nothing (see Risacher). If any team is going to give him chance after chance it’ll be Portland.
Maybe, but if Ja and Dame remain healthy (big ifs, tbf) Scoot won’t get much chance to prove himself the next year or two.
massive ifs, and same for Jrue and Sharpe tbqh. There’s no way we make it through the season without at least one of them missing extended time.
Dame is 36. I actually think scoot and Ja could work together as i think scoot’s defense is going to become a weapon.
Could’ve got up three 3s in the time it took for that dunk
He’d be lucky to be there
He’ll be solid as the 5th guard behind Dame, Jrue, Sharpe, and Ja
On offense jrue isn’t really a guard, but yeah Ja signing makes scoot redundant in a way.
Think the intention is for Jrue and sharpe to play a lot of sf
Ideally not a lot for Sharpe. Jrue has been solid there in the past though because of how good of a defender he is. But ideally the minutes he plays at SF frees up minutes at SG for Sharpe
I fully expect 1 or 2 of Dame, Ja, Shaedon, Scoot, and Jrue to be traded by the deadline. No matter how the team decides to manage rotations, it just doesn’t make much sense to have this many guards who need minutes.
I fully expect 1 or 2 of Dame, Ja, Shaedon, Scoot, and Jrue to be traded injured by the deadline.
[deleted]
Somehow, the younger generation is getting fooled by facebook and instagram aggregation worse than the olds now.
Ja is on Portland? With Dame, Jrue and Scoot? Damn…
Seems like one of those cases where if you have like 5 point guards, you don’t even have 1 point guard.
Don’t forget Vit Krecji
Thunder legend
I have no idea what Portland plans to do… never mind Scoot.
Scoot is probably ahead of Shaedon at this point
Remember when people were really asking, him or Wemby lol
No,
But i do remember all of the “He would be #1 in literally any other draft” noise.
That was especially funny when he didn’t even go 2nd in his own draft, can’t just point to Wemby when even Miller was seen as a better prospect by GMs
They say that every year
those people wanted to be contrarian and stand out from the crowd so bad lol
There were definitely folks worried Wemby would be too frail and injury prone. I also don’t think people expected his offensive game to be as advanced as it is. But, yeah, he was still the #1 pick based on his upside which he has shown was the correct decision.
No, but I remember a lot of people (including myself) thinking Scott would be a star after that game between Ignite and Wemby’s team 1 year before the draft
Nobody was seriously saying Scoot over Wemby
It was Scoot or Brandon Miller at #2 that was the debate
oh look, he and Mac McClung have something in common
Only one thing?
He should come backup Prichard
Bro would’ve won the dunk contest with that
It’s crazy that this caption is accurate and maybe even underselling of the trail blazers depth (Sharp plays some pg). Guy is a promising young talent behind three two aging all stars and an injury prone potential superstar.
Sharpe plays PG? Since when??
Rarely when the blazers where short handed he did. It was more just to not how insane their guard depth is.
No…that just didn’t happen bud. The ball was run by Deni, Scoot, Jrue and sometimes Blake.
The only time Sharpe has ever played pg is when there are no other guards available.
Yeah that’s what I mean. It was more for the hypothetical.
Rockets offer something for this man so we can have some sort of backup pg
Get one crazy big and run the four pg. Jrue can play forward a little.
HEYYYYY
He’s only 22
God..I know you’ll let me get this build one day
Awesome vid. Great size. Look thick. Solid. Tight. Keep us all posted on his continued progress with any new progress pics or vid clips. Show us what Scoot’s got man. Wanna see how freakin’ huge, solid, thick and tight he can get. Thanks for the motivation.
Looks leaner IMO than his rookie year when he looked huge.
Scooot
Is he really 4th string now? Was it coz of injuries?
I’m sure they’ll play some of these guys at the 2, but he has Lillard/Morant/Holiday ahead of him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Jrue and Scoot end up playing mostly the 2. Honestly, Jrue might be a 3. Obviously this is assuming without anyone being traded and someone being traded during the season is very plausible.
In case anyone is giving up on him, remember that you gotta toot to scoot
There was once a debate if a team would take him over Wemby 😂😂😂
this is one of those dunks that i’m just obsessed with. haven’t seen one in awhile… it’s not dead!
just like scoots career, i still believe.
NBA’s 4th string is still NBA
This guy reminds me of Antonio Daniels, basically an identical replica of Scoot.
Grizzlies drafted him 4th I think, big things were expected, he had all the right tools, but you know when something is off but you can’t put your finger on it, well that was it.
Daniels was a solid contributor on a championship caliber Spurs team and later a decent Wizards roster. Scoot still has a way to go to even reach that.
It’s crazy that people act like Scoot is complete garbage when the dude balled out in the playoffs literally this year. Clearly he has the tools to be successful, he just has to be consistent
He had a couple of good games in the playoffs (they still lost one of those at least). For as “good” as those games were look at his last two playoff games. He was legit awful.
I mean he was once debated to be better than Wemby and probably wouldn’t be a top 25 pick if there was a redraft.
Not 25? Come on.. I know it’s the internet but that’s absurd and you know it.
I would still take him top 10 and not 10 but consensus should have him top 15 no matter what.
That title is foul 😭
Shot and defense are coming around. Just gotta get his rim finishing in order and Scoot is gonna have something real.
He is still a below average 3 point shooter after 3 years in the NBA. At what point do you think he makes the leap?
He’s better than Ja
Since when is he their 4th string?
He’s not actually lol, but yeah oops all guards again as most of dames tenure was. Toumani and Deni are the best forwards dame will have played with besides 2 years with LMA and batum.
Dame and holiday will probably skip 20-25 games load managing assuming no injury, so likely more. Ja is just getting back. Scoot AND don’t forget sharpe will get their shots. Sharpe and holiday unfortunately will end up playing time at the 3, or as a wing in 3 guard lineups.
I think it will be fun! Losing Deni or Camara to injury will really expose our depth.
good at C hopefully with clingan on the rise, Williams choosing to come back and having a very healthy season, and the two bargain bin pickups they made this summer.
Bench dame I’ve seen enough.
Scoot can hoop.
I ain’t never seen scoot jump this high in a game
Why is he so bad at finishing at the rim
Golly, mans is built
I’m
He’ll be great for the Beijing Ducks
i have faith in scoot. he definitely needs to improve on his shooting 41/35/84 wont cut it
Casually throws down a dunk I’ve never seen before
I can’t believe it has been 30 years, but when Isaiah Rider first did the East Bay Funk Dunk, people lost their minds. It was like something nobody had ever imagined, let alone done. 30 years later, a lot of High School kids can do that and more. Dunking isn’t everything but it does display athleticism. It’s amazing how far athletes have come…
See that little ladder? The hoops been adjusted to 9 1⁄2 ft is my guess. Doesn’t look right
Mavs have to trade one of their forwards for him. Then he has a fresh start where he doesn’t sit behind half a roster of guards.
Pretty crowded backcourt.
Wasn’t pumped for Scoot when I heard they got Morant. Just wondering how much playing time he can get.
Heard he’ll do great in the G League this year
Puma didn’t give this dude a sig for nothing
Morant is the 4th string. Dude is washed.
All that aggression going into OP’s crush pussy gonna be insane on Twitter
Better than anything in the dunk contest last year
Damn, that was better than every dunk in the last 2-3 dunk contests
Show the athleticism that wins a ring
