LaMelo Ball sued by Cam Newton’s family business for not paying Charlotte rent

They gotta understand….
Uncle Sam taking half his money…then you gotta support the fam…..then you gotta buy all the nice houses and nice cars…at the end of the day 35 million is not 35 million.
Oh you like not paying bills too, huh? That’s cool, watch this
READAYYYYYY
<insert touchdown pass as he dabs on em>
That’s that lien route! That’s the lien route!
I read this in Clay Matthews voice holy
This thread reads like a clip from Gridiron Heights lmao
Lmao bro pulled out the eviction notice like it was a finisher 💀
Plus the biggest expense of them all, his car insurance
I imagine his insurance payment is a daily draft from his bank account
There’s still someone willing to insure him?
There are firms willing to insure oil tankers crossing through the Strait of Hormuz, car insurance for LaMelo can’t be more than 80% as risky as that.
Have we tried forcing the Strait of Hormuz open by letting LaMelo pilot the oil tankers?
Now we’re talking. Perhaps wemby can be on board and just swat away all the drones?
As a Spurs hater please allow Wembust to 1v1 a Shahed.
oh hey wemby dont need to be dragged into this
Those firms also charge accordingly however, Strait of Hormuz insurance and car insurance are not the same
Paying for insurance and getting insurance to pay out are two very different things.
There is no insurance on earth who wont insure a multi millionaire
Idk how they can even survive with ONLY 35m man 😪😪😪
Cam Newtons hat budget is probably in the millions alone. Can’t be having guys skip out on rent
You’re probably right and I can’t believe anyone would pay that to look that stupid.
Marc Davis has a barber
35m just doesn’t go as far as it used to back in the day.
Ahahaha
LaMelo’s lifetime NBA earnings will surpass Cam Newton’s lifetime NFL earnings this upcoming season.
Then you’d think he’d be able to pay his rent on time
Did you also see that YouTube short with Draymond and Carmelo saying 100mil isn’t 100 mil😂 NBA players and bad spending habits will always be a thing
35 millions is not 35 millions, I’ll explain to you later
Lamelo gotta pay that Lavar Ball tax.
Ehh I don’t think he was incapable just indifferent
He’s probably not paying much to family. One brother is richer than him, and the other hit big as a rap star. Dad’s mansion was bought a long time ago by Lonzo. Dad probably gets a manager’s percentage, though.
lol rap “star” is incredibly generous
Don’t forget supporting all the single moms medical school bills at the gentleman’s clubs.
Cam Newton finally diving for a Ball.
He made a different business decision this time
Bruhhhh
LMAO that Broncos defense was nasty though, shut him down the the whole game.
Kinda ended his career
nah he was good in 2017 as well
True Panthers fans know he was on the upswing when TJ Watt pretty much destroyed his throwing shoulder and ended that era of Panthers football sadly.
He tore his labrum the next year
Is a torn labia typically a precursor to a torn labrum?
Do you think Cam Newton was a pussy
Congratulations, this is amazing
Comments like these is the only reason i still show up and clock into reddit every morning.
Wait you get wages for this?
Do you not?
Lamelo Ball finally learning to swerve
Top 10 Anime Redemption Arcs
Chilllll lol
Oh no
That’s it you win
Edit: Cam Newton downvotted me 😭
Cant live on a NBA contract
did anyone read the article?? Ball’s manager is the one who rented the room and didn’t pay but technically Ball sublet to him so he’s being named in the lawsuit.
Ball holds the primary lease and he has a contractual obligation to the landlord to pay the rent. He sublet to the manager and they may have had an agreement between all three parties that the manager would pay the landlord directly, but that didn’t release Ball from assuring that the rent got paid under the master lease.
Ball will have a claim against the manager to recover the back amount of rent, but Ball definitely owes that money.
Yeah lol, “the guy I sublet to didn’t pay me so I can’t pay you either” is not going to fly in court.
The irony of a guy saying, “Did anyone read the article?” then getting almost every important fact wrong is simply lovely
Not that it matters he paid half the rent. Bc of some supposedly leaking tank. Odd/interesting story. Lawyers will make more than the rent is worth haha.
He paid the original rate of \(7500 a month after it was increased to \)13500
Yeah idk why that person thinks subletting absolves ball of all responsibility
Ball’s former manager I hope.
You know we don’t know how to read
Ball still has to pay it though
Nothing trashier than not paying your bills that are due fair and square
B-but he needs to be frugal with his millions.
His entire salary goes to cover his car insurance premiums
Would love to know who writes his auto and umbrella lol
Gotta save up for another car to crash
his insurance has to be sooo expensive lol
If you read the article he’s being sued because his manager didn’t pay rent and got evicted. And him and his manager were living across the hall from each other. His manager was sued and now they’ve sued Ball as well to get their money.
That’s not what it says.
LaMelo leased multiple units in the same building. He lived in one himself, but sublet the other to his manager.
His manager fell behind on rent to the property owner. Because LaMelo was subletting, LaMelo is financially responsible.
LaMelo bought the property - seemingly to prevent his manager from getting evicted - but apparently didn’t work out a deal to cover a quarter million dollars worth of missed payments still owed to the previous owner.
EDIT: Nah, it actually says that LaMelo bought his unit, but not his manager’s unit. So it’s even worse. Basically no way for the deal to have covered missed payments on another unit.
Melo only bought one of the two condos. His manager was subleasing the one he didn’t buy.
even worse
bro - wtf is he doing hiring a manager that can’t even manage to make rent?
Apparently the manager was without holding rent because of some issue.
But didn’t actually go through the proper channels
Not to mention the fact that even if he did go through the proper channels (getting a court order approving a withholding of rent), the amount he would have been approved to withhold would not have been the full amount of rent. It would’ve been the difference in market value of the condo with a non-leaking aquarium and the market value of the condo as is (with the leaking aquarium).
That’s what the issue was, I knew it wasn’t something major but forgot the issue.
Yeah it’s super misinformed to assume you could not pay for such a relatively minor issue.
Ya that’s a bad choice in management.
Sorry to the Balls
Me when the torsion hits
LOL
LaMelo signed the lease and sublet the apartment to his manager, so he is still ultimately responsible for the unpaid rent.
Pretty sure there are many things trashier than that
read the article, it’s not him it’s his manager that didn’t pay and bum ass land lord doubled the rent while the aquarium was leaking
That’s like the main point of the manager, is that it wasn’t due fair and square. Rent doubled while there was a significant problem with the property, so he refused to pay the increase while the issue was ongoing. This is not a clear cut case of tenant running out on rent like you are implying. Withholding rent is a perfectly reasonable thing to do as a tenant and is often the only way to get the landlord to notice / care.
Just so nobody gets the wrong idea from your comment, in many jurisdictions (including NC) you can’t withhold rent as a tenant on your own volition. You first need to obtain approval from a court. And the court will specify the amount you can withhold. That said, you’d never get to withhold the full amount of rent due to a leaking aquarium.
But he’s gotta have a fund saved up in case he commits vehicular manslaughter.
Well this is a fun article.
Jackson’s attorney previously said Jackson refused to pay an increased \(13,500 monthly rent for the unit when the aquarium was leaking. He paid the original rate, which was \)7,500, instead. Newton’s father, Cecil Newton, showed up in a small Mecklenburg district courtroom in May as his attorneys argued the case. A judge found that photos of the leak did not show that the unit was uninhabitable. Ball recently settled a lawsuit filed by the family of a boy who claimed Ball ran over his foot while driving away from the Spectrum Center after a scrimmage game.

Landlord increased rent and refused to fix leak. But also, the leak was for a built in aquarium? Also, ouch.
These landlords are horrible. If you’re going to double the rent, I better not have any issues in the unit. Crazy they still want to half ass at that price
Honestly inclined to agree. I wonder if they raised rent when Melo got his extension. And is that legal?
Depends the state or city. If it’s while renewing the lease I would guess it’s legal in North Carolina
If they’re smart they’ll hire a structural engineer to check out the area with the tank
lol I was gonna side with the landlord till I read that he tried to double the price of rent on them…fuck that greedy asshole
LaEvicted
Edit: I can’t spell
*LaEvicted
No, it’s LaViosa
Shoulda paid the LaRent
**LaEvicted. This about Melo, not Bron.
***LaEvicted. This is about LaMelo, not Carmelo.
If LaMelo were just a couple years younger, I’d swear on my life that his dad combined the names of Bron & Melo.
LaEvicted and his son LaEvictedOne
So that’s why they traded him.
Melosexual
If you read the article it sounds like it’s Lamelo’s manager that owes
No one cares about the truth lol
It’s true. All they see is “LaMelo Ball not paying rent” doesn’t matter if it’s true or not.
It’s true though. That’s the responsibility when you sublease.
You make mistakes and never come back from them it seems lol
Well it says Ball is the one who originally leased both apartments and let his manager stay in one. So who knows how or if they changed the lease agreement at some point.
If not, it would be perfectly appropriate to bring Ball into this. Don’t sign your name for unreliable people.
Yeah…I was like the article says Ball subleased it meaning he’s responsible for the lease. I’ve been screwed before doing this for a buddy (was a naive 20 yo). Looks like Ball is finding out the hard way as well not to be so trusting.
Well that and I also wonder if the rent went up that much because of Melo’s extension kicking in. It looks like that’s legal to do in Charlotte and I’d feel pretty angry about it, so I also understand the tenant pushing back on an unhelpful landlord.
Nobody would’ve posted or clicked on the article if it said Jermaine tho
LaMelo was subletting it so he’s on the hook, not Jermaine
Tbf, I investigated more to find out if it was that Jermaine Jackson.
If you sign the lease papers but have someone else live there and they refuse to pay rent who’s problem is it? Because last time I checked if your name is on there it’s your responsibility.
Ball was the named tenant, and he sublet to his manager. If his manager doesn’t pay the rent, Ball is still responsible for ensuring the landlord gets paid rent.
My first thought was do u really think lamelo manages his own finances and rent like I refuse to believe that
That doesn’t absolve him of responsibility.
Either his position is that he was robbed (which isn’t being claimed), or he signed over the ability to manage his finances to someone he shouldn’t have, which is entirely his fault still.
Lamelo is the renter, he sublet it to his manager but he’s still on the hook if it isn’t paid, you can’t sublet to someone else and absolve yourself of responsibility
If you read the article it says LaMelo signed the lease and sublet the apartment to his manager, so he is ultimately the one responsible.
bum asses don’t read articles
God damn, assume it’s expected with luxury apartment but that $6000 rent increase would rock me
No doubt the increase happened when LaMelo signed the $204M contract.
why do people keep repeating this, that’s not how lease contracts work.
Sure.
Can’t get blood out of a stone.
Oh shit, you’re no longer a stone, now you got blood? A lot of blood. Gimme some of dat blood.
This is exactly how they work. What happens when your lease is up for renewal? Unless your apartment is rent controlled (in this case it was a luxury building, so it wasn’t), the landlord can increase rent to whatever they want. You either sign it for the new amount or leave.
They lived there for 5 years. LaMelo signed his contract 3 years ago. It’s perfectly possible that the rent was increased when they signed a lease renewal after Lamelo’s 200M contract was signed
What is out of the realm of possibility for that?
It’s a big club
What a shit show man. LaMelo leased two apartments, sublet one to his manager. Manager had a dispute with the property management company and stopped paying rent. Now Melo is getting dragged into it.
Can’t be on a $204 million contract and get involved in this petty shit. And it’s not the first time. Dude really needs to surround himself with better people.
Bro almost everyone in this entire post thinks its Lamelo its crazy, I know Lamelo has a bad history with driving but damn everyone’s ripping him a new one on this thread like they’re the landlord lol
That’s how easy it is to sway public narrative with a title. People are too lazy to read.
On brand
last sentence in the article is the icing on the cake lol
This is definitely an accountant issue. These athletes don’t pay their bills themselves
It seems like it’s an issue with his Manager not being willing to pay. But Lamelo owns the lease (maybe) so the lawyers are trying to get the money out of him instead because it’s way easier.
Sounds like it’s a dispute over repairs.
Chairman LaMaolo standing up against landlords
The second most flamboyant/eccentric Charlotte sports icon stiffing the most flamboyant/eccentric Charlotte sports icon. What a world.
i swear i read cam thomas here
If Cam Thomas lived in that apartment he would be ok a supermax
Why the hell is the business called “Agape”? That’s just gross.
I don’t understand how they can increase the rent from 7500 to 13500??? That just seems insane
Either the lease expressly permits the landlord to increase the rent during the lease term (highly unlikely but possible, given that these mega luxury leases probably have some unique provisions), or else rent could have only been increased at the beginning of a new lease term (with the required prior advance notice being given), in which case Melo could have chosen not to renew the lease if he didn’t like the proposed increase.
All the comments not reading the article clearly
He had terrible representation but he’s fixed that. It will all get handled. Not a news story.
First reckless driving, now this.

Yes, Ball was subletting one of the two condos to his manager who wasn’t paying rent (Ball owns the other one). Landlord still looks to the tenant (Ball) to make sure the rent gets paid.
Former Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is being sued by a business owned by the father of former Carolina Panthers star Cam Newton.
The Hornets traded Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves last month, but a new lawsuit is following him there. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Mecklenburg Superior Court, is a continuation of the claims Agape Property Management madeagainst Ball’s manager, Jermaine Jackson, earlier this year. A judge previously evicted Jackson after the company said Jackson owed more than $280,000 in unpaid rent and HOA compliance fees. Now, the company claims Ball is responsible for that money, too.
When Ball moved to Charlotte in 2020, he signed a lease for two luxury apartments above Chima Steakhouse in uptown, the lawsuit says. Newton, the former Panthers quarterback who played in the Super Bowl in 2016, previously owned both units before they became owned and managed by his family’s company.
For the past five years, Ball lived in 4B. He sublet 5B to Jackson, who has been Ball’s manager since high school, according to the lawsuit. Ball eventually bought 4B outright for $2.47 million, and he continued leasing 5B for Jackson.
But Jackson didn’t pay his rent, the lawsuit contends. And Ball didn’t step up to pay Agape Property Management what was owed.
This went on for more than a year, the lawsuit says.
This kind of makes me think about what athlete has the most businesses in the city that they played for
I’m a certified hater, but the article actually makes me understand Lamelo here…
However:
Let the hatin continue
Seems on brand
Cam making his rounds to collect after getting snubbed
LaSquatter
This is big Baller brand
That’s my PG, he’s innocent
Top comments from people that didn’t bother reading the article.
If you read the article, you can see that it is about his agent not paying.
The family decided LaMelo owes them too that money.

Under normal leasing agreements, a tenant is going to be responsible for a subtenant’s failure to pay rent. It’s not complicated.
It’s also not complicated why someone would refuse to pay a nearly 100% rent increase while the landlord refuses to make repairs. It’s perfectly legal in many places in the US to withhold part of rent if certain repairs are not made in a timely manner by the landlord
The problem is that in NC (and in many other jurisdictions), a tenant would need approval through a court order to withhold rent. Tenants can’t withhold unilaterally. The issue is further complicated by the fact that this was a sublet. And as for the rent increase, it would have to have occurred either at the start of a new lease term (with the required amount of prior notice given), or else the lease contained some very unusual clause permitting a rent increase during the term (permitted by law, but highly unusual).
LaMelo Ball not paying rent is praxis #LaComrade
FYI everything after the “. html” in that link just tracks that anyone clicking the link got it from you. Cutting the last long part out removes the tracking aspect
Thanks for the heads up! I tried to make this a link post, but apparently that’s not allowed in this sub.
I know for sure he’s going to be broke after he retire
He should drive with a basketball in his lap. It’s the only time he doesn’t crash
Not the most important thing here but a $6000+ rent increase is insanity. Like even if I can afford it, that’s wild. For an extra 6 grand, for 13k on the whole, I better NEVER have anything wrong in my apartment.
Skipping out on rent; crashing cars. The Big Baller lifestyle is rough.
Reckless driving tickets ain’t gonna pay themselves, I mean come on
All-time muppet dumbass.
Repossess his cars before his stupid ass kills someone on a wintry road in MN.
This surprises me, and yet doesn’t surprise me.
What a hateful land lord :p

So it’s not really about LaMelo Ball himself…
It is about LaMelo because his name is on the lease
Ball’s still responsible for the rent, regardless of whether the sub-tenant pays.
Lamelo really out here getting hit with a lawsuit over unpaid rent from cam newton’s family business, you cant make this up.
I could make it up, easily.
Goddamn, they leave but aren’t forgotten. SuperCam and LaMelo, legends forever
lol wtf
Rich people sue each other over real estate all the time. I think it’s just part of doing business.
If anyone is surprised by this, it’s very common for rich people to not pay their bills. Stiffing others gives them a sense of power over them, even if they could easily afford it. Just look at our dear president..
Lamelo “Buckle Up Buckaroos” Ball is a menace to the streets AND bill collectors? Say it ain’t so!
Not surprised
Feel like this isn’t about money but about someone who can’t do boring adult stuff properly and doesn’t hire someone to do it for them
folks aint gonna keep being patient with you
How you not gonna own a home?
How you not gonna read the article and comment?
What are you talking about I did? If youre gonna pay $7500 in rent in Charlotte (of all places), you might as well by a home to build equity. I dont see that price as a “deal” to rent through Ball.
This kids an idiot I fear for my team…
LaMelo having thousands in HOA non-compliance fees is a given.
Does LaMelo have any redeeming qualities?
