From the start of the year their wins were vs Pelicans (no Zion or DJM), Cavs (no Garland or Strus), 76ers (no Paul George or McCain), Wizards, Magic, Grizzlies (no Morant or Edey), Clippers (no Kawhi or Beal), Nets, Magic (no Banchero or Suggs), Pistons, Cavs (no Jarrett Allen or Max Strus), Knicks (no Anunoby), Wizards (no Sarr or Coulibaly), Lakers (no Luka, LeBron or Smart), Raptors (no Barrett), Heat, Raptors (no Barrett), Pacers (no Haliburton, Nesmith, or McConnell), Pacers (no Haliburton or Nesmith), Jazz (no Bailey or Kessler) and that took them right up until the new year. They were 20-12 at this point. 51 win pace with an incredibly soft schedule. Then they benefitted from teams going into tank mode. Their record was better than they actually were.

As someone that watched every Celtics game, their offense was a struggle despite the numbers. Everything they did looked tough or forced. They got bailed out a lot by Brown making tough looks and Pritchard being elite in the midrange. If they had normal shooting percentages with the way they played and average health and played decent competition, that team would have won 46-49 games and been a 4-6 seed and nobody would be surprised how they wound up a first round exit.

This year’s team is better on paper, but their competition is jumping them. They are not winning 60 games.

It’s a multi billion dollar business based on the teams net worth alone. Not to mention gambling money, under the table shenanigans (I doubt Aspiration is the only example of this - it’s just the most egrigious).

I don’t think anyone would argue that Jaylen Brown is a bad player that is incapable of contributing to a champion (he objectively did already). Just that he might not be worth his contract and/or worthy of his 6th place MVP finish.

I expect Philly will be very good, but if they are to be a true contender then there’s simply no way Brown can have the kind of usage and raw scoring volume he did last season. If they’re somehow an elite team with him taking the same number of shots as last year I would be absolutely shocked.

It’s also not just the advanced stats. If you actually watch him play and don’t just look at traditional box score stats he has obvious flaws in his game that have always made Tatum the easily superior player (yes ik he narrowly won the mvps in their title run). He doesn’t have good vision, he takes a lot of difficult long twos without being particularly good at them, and he falls asleep off the ball on defense.

His passing has gotten marginally better but it’s still a big weakness for someone who has the ball as much as he did last year.

Edgecombe averaged 13fga last season (16ppg) and might have been ready for a similar leap in year 2, but these new additions will probably prevent it. I don’t think they’ve forgotten. Despite the string of disappointment, GSW appear to still be the highest revenue team in the NBA, and by a lot. There’s probably not much higher of a share of fan revenue they could squeeze out by selling the entire stockpile for another ring. I’m a Warriors fan that is pissed about how the front office has approached team building over the last few years.

But in this case I agree. (I’m also firmly in the Jaylen Brown is way overrated camp though).

The problem with the Warriors is that drafting Wiseman and Kuminga were colossal failures, and they prioritized those picks/players over whatever value they had at the time instead of doing something better with them.

I also think Lacob is a fucking moron, and a lot of the focus on the future came from him. He’s also the only guy that was obsessed with Kuminga while everyone else saw his issues.

At this point they’re trying to fix mistakes years after they actually happened, which is the big problem.

Making no trade is significantly better than making a bad trade and this would have been a bad trade 100%. Brown is a mediocre three point shooter that’s turnover prone, two things the Warriors DON’T need. Not to mention another guard and that’s the last thing Kerr needs.

We need size, shooting and ball handling and I’m more excited to see what Yaxel can do than take on a player that I know isn’t gonna help while selling off the entire future to do so.

Jaylen has pretty obvious deficiencies in his game and tends to disappear/underperform in big playoff moments (honestly his FMVP was due to him slightly eking out Tatum statistically in an overall team effort, against an overmatched Dallas team). He’s also a bit of a head case, (although not one on the level of Kyrie/Durant/Ja/Kawhi) which makes it hard to give him the keys to your team as the lead guy.

Do I think he can be a key piece of this new Sixers team and win another ring? Absolutely. Embiid/Maxey/LeBron/Brown/Edgecombe is even more loaded on paper than the 2024 Celtics team that won a ring.

I don’t think he can ever be the top option on a rebuilding or emerging contender though. He’d be an empty stat guy competing for the play-in if he was the undisputed star.
