[Dr. Nirav Pandya M.D] We studied every NBA Achilles tear from 2014-2025 (19 players) to find out what happens in the games right before the injury.
The finding: minutes played spiked significantly in the 10-15 games before rupture — even though season-long workload looked totally normal.
7 Achilles tears in 2024-25 alone. 3 of those tears occurred in the playoffs.
This is a real, growing problem in the league.

It’s important to read the entire paper, but here is its conclusion:
Our study demonstrated significant workload spikes in the 10 to 15 games preceding Achilles ruptures for NBA players.
Veteran players carried heavier cumulative workloads, whereas younger players ruptured tendons under lighter usage. These exploratory findings align with prior literature suggesting that both sudden increases in playing time and cumulative career demands can compromise tendon durability, and such findings warrant further investigation.
Proactive workload management, athlete education, and targeted prevention strategies may help preserve player health and career longevity in the NBA.
