How much leeway do you give them. Like are you satisfied at that point and you don’t care what they do? Do they have a 5 year grace period? Do they need to go back to back ? How do you feel?

I got to go to the Phillies and Eagles parades, I’m honestly good on being a part of that side of things, but it’s what 18 years since the Phillies WS win and I’m disappointed every year they flame out. The Eagles resets every year to wanting to win again, but 2019 season I remember being a little more lax, same with 2023
If the Sixers win with this team I don’t think I’d expect the to ever get there again purely due to the insanely bad luck the franchise has had since at least the time Embiid was drafted, and the insane roster that was put together. Regardless, 45 years is long enough.

Now you’re really good for the rest of your life.

And you got to spend the majority of your 30s watching the team get their heart ripped out in the most awe inspiring ways possible because when you were 15 you said you’re good for the rest of your life. A lifetime can be a looooooooong time.

Yeah this question doesn’t have a simple answer. I imagine it holds different weight depending on how much your city/team has won in your lifetime. Then add in more context with the changing of the players on the team.
2011 was the greatest sports experience of my life. Watching that title run with my dad a month before he died.
No dynasty could ever replace that experience for me.

I think you get five years tbh. The Raptors kinda fucked around in the early part of the decade but we didn’t care that much. Now it feels like there are some stakes and some of the bad decisions made during that time and since have pissed off part of the fanbase.

I don’t think anyone is jubilant if you have a 25% win rate ever. But you kinda just fall back like “yes we suck, well at least we won once”.

To me if the team is clearly in a different era with nobody left from the title team, then you have to judge it accordingly like it’s brand new.

Our path was also VERY unconventional. No drafted superstar and no superstar free agent. That eliminates like 95% of championships. If your team doesn’t do one of those things you’re kinda screwed.

I never complain about the Spurs even 12 years removed from a championship, obviously, but with excellence comes expectations. I’ve had a lot of disappointment from bad playoff losses after ‘99, and did notice that we were out in the wilderness for a long time before Wemby, but I think whiny Spurs fans are absurd.
The Texas Rangers won three years ago and I’m still riding high, though they’ve been mediocre ever since. Again, expectations.
I still never complain about Jerry Jones, so that’s a lifetime pass for three championships in my childhood. I may be alone in that one.
Series stressed me out as a Thunder fan but was so hype as a basketball fan. I wouldn’t have even been super upset if they had won instead of us. Two teams that didn’t have one giving it their absolute all led to some great basketball.
As a fan you’re still going to care, but the pressure is much less now, there is no huge drought anymore there are no questions of “will I ever witness them win it all” anymore.
I give the current team and Jalen Brunson all the leeway in the world. My opinion will change once Brunson, OG, Towns, Bridges, etc are off the team. Once its a new core team is when my opinion will change.

I was at game 6 in person of the 2021 NBA finals when they won it all. I’ve been lucky enough to be at the highest of the highs, everything else that’s happened is the cost of being a champion.

Knicks fan. You care and want to repeat but if you’ve been at it for a while it kinda feels calm. If we win next year I’ll be very happy, if we don’t, I’m alright. I can’t speak for fans of teams that have won multiple chips though.

And it was actually crazy to witness the Pacers’ run when I was actively rooting for the Thunder (hate me all you want, they’re the most local team to me- Missouri NBA fans have it kind of rough).

As a fan of three teams that have won championships in my lifetime (Indiana BB 87, Indianapolis Colts 06, Indiana FB 26), eighteen years is the grace period. That’s when a child born the day after you won becomes an adult and has not experienced a championship in their lifetime.
Winning a chip is hard. Back to back is harder. But it should always be the goal.

The first two I was too young to have memories of. But I remember 2004 like it was yesterday. I remember watching the Tayshaun block at the bar of the hotel I worked at. I remember watching game 5 at my buddy’s house and we all hugged when the final whistle blew. I remember getting up early to go to the parade. Big Ben hoisting the trophy in front of me. Given how much of an underdog that year they were against the Lakers, I’m not sure any win I witness again in my lifetime will ever top that euphoria that year. It was special and if it’s the only one I witness in my lifetime, I’ll be content. But more would be nice now that we have Cade.

After the Bucks won the championship, I was hoping for another, but I was just grateful to be recognized. When I realized the window had shut. I decided I’m going to enjoy all the primetime games while it lasts. I got to go to a Christmas game and that’s something I never thought would happen.
It really depends on the market, the team’s history, and if (and how recently) they won a previous championship.
I’d like to think that Knicks fans will have a cheerier outlook for a few years but if the team disappoints and gets eliminated within the first two rounds next season, will they fall back to their residual doomerism? TBD.

The only championship for any of my teams in my lifetime (Nets, Mets, Jets, Islanders) was the Mets when I was not quite 2 years old.
Looking at Nuggets/Bucks fans (ie teams who haven’t won in a while), they seem so angry only a couple years after their chip, so not much grace period tbh

TBF our team was setup for a potential dynasty run but then the new CBA was negotiated and our Jokic-merchant owners decided that one championship was good enough so we better cheap out on the GM and coaching staff who got us there. Add in the injuries and the lack of physicality/hustle in key moments and it makes sense that a large portion of our fanbase is frustrated. Denver is a city that has come to expect championships and when teams don’t do their part to remain competitive, we tune out

I think this team is good enough to get another ring and if they’re not doing the right thing I’ll call it out. But will I ever be truly mad at the guys on the team? Probably not. But that’s not different from my typical approach anyway, I’ve never been the “fire everyone, trade everyone” fan.
I was alive (and cognizant) the last time the Yankees won a championship in 2009, but that’s not going to stop me from being disappointed in them not winning one in a totally different era with Judge. I’m sure people in their 30s and 40s or older think Yankees fans complaining about anything is dumb, but it’s not like I have some deep emotional connection to the 4 I was barely alive for.
I think it just comes down to eras of the team. Whatever else happens in this era for the most part it is what it is. But people who say they’re good for the rest of their lives off one, that’s insane if you’re not over the age of 60 lol. That’s like if somebody said they were good with the Knicks rings in the 70s and then Ewing goes ringless in the 90s in the most brutal ways imaginable.
I was around 10 when the Yankees were winning. I think the Yankees are held to a different standard year after year.
That being said, I think these Knicks are the greatest team of my fandom. Maybe seeing the Yankee dominance at a young age desensitized me to greatness early on, and the drought for the Knicks made this sweeter.

2019 - Altuve walk off in Game 6 of the ALCS
2020 - ALDS loss to the Rays
2021 - Wild Card loss to Red Sox
2022 - ALCS they get swept by the Astros who go on to win another World Series, essentially invalidating the excuse that you just lost because they cheated
2023 - missed the playoffs entirely
So the Altuve walk off happened. It is what it is, you can’t take it back and you can’t hold onto the cheating scandal forever. But then 3 out of 4 years after you got further and further from a championship until you miss the playoffs entirely. And they still keep the manager and GM. That is insanity to me, and I don’t think that’s expecting the Yankees to just win it every year. That’s just judging them for the facts, which is that they consistently got further from a championship. It’s like the exact opposite of what happened to Thibs. Thibs got closer and closer to a championship every year and they fired him because they felt like they could do better.
I mean the 90s Yankees won 4 out of 5 and 3peated. Knicks aren’t there yet. I wasn’t alive for the 90s Yankees though, I’d only be able to compare them to the two Pats Super Bowl wins or the 09 Yankees. In which case this is number 1 for me.
Will I be sad we don’t win again? Of course, but I got to witness one of my pro teams win a championship which is very hard to do. I give them as much leeway as I could. I got to see one and that’s great. Now what I would do for my chargers to give me one too 😭

I always said I wanted two championships out of the Jokic era. I realize that’s a bit greedy but if you have the best player in the world for a five year span that ought to make it possible.

Not really a black and white answer for everyone. Being at the top of the league with a historically dominant run I wasn’t feeling fully satisfied after losing to Toronto and losing KD/Klay to injury and free agency. It was like, how do they keep this going? After two dreadful years and coming back to win in 2022 it fulfilled a lot for me, and I’m at the point where I’m not going crazy over falling off the mountain top. It was an amazing run, and the end was going to come sooner or later.

I think the difference between one and none is exponentially different than one and two, three, etc. I’m a fan of the Leafs, Raptors, and Patriots. The Leafs are bums and I hate them. The Patriots won so much that no individual Super Bowl was that special. That Raptors chip was the greatest sports moment of my life.

I could use the Rangers as a direct example and comparison to the Knicks. After they won in ‘94 they had leeway for as long as they were good. After the 97-98 season and especially after Gretzky retired and there was no longer a reason to see the GOAT, it was back to being annoyed with them at the start of 99-2000. Then they had a lot of goodwill from 06-15 because it was a gradual climb that looked like it would end with a Cup. When it didn’t, the good will went away, and ever since they’ve either been lousy or they’re playoff losses have been viewed more as choke jobs and letting the opportunity slip away rather than a step towards something greater.
TL;DR, they (should) stay in your good graces for as long as they remain competitive.
As a Pacers fan I can tell you they would have lifetime leeway from me if they ever won. We were only a half away of knowing how it would feel too..

2024 championship seems like ages ago. 24-25 season was championship or bust - pretty much no leeway. End of that was of course devastating. Last season was fun because expectations were low for the first time in a long time, and the team exceeded them. Now it feels like a whole new era. I think expectations are tempered, but there will be very little patience with the clock ticking on Tatum’s prime.
I’ve been riding the 2016 Cavs win for a decade now. It does help that we seemingly have an owner that does not care about spending and is actively trying to win.

I completely stopped caring about results after the Mavs won in 2011. Watching Dirk’s whole career lead up to that run will never be topped. It’s been just entertainment for me ever since.

No offense to other franchises’ fans and their (rightful) happiness, but the least we expect is having another go at it.
