They won 64 games in 2024 and had the best record in the league by far, but Tatum wasn’t top 5 in MVP and Mazzulla wasn’t top 3 for COTY. They have been punished by being such a well oiled machine that individuals don’t get the credit that they do on other teams.

I didn’t think Tatum should be top 5 that year over Brunson, but my argument was that Mazzulla should clearly be COTY because they were amazing.

You didn’t. I never argued Tatum should have won in 2024 and said I had Brunson in 5th over him.

What I am saying is that Tatum has consistently led one of the best teams in the league year after year and is never in MVP contention because people attribute to the Celtics as a well oiled machine rather than him being one of the best players in the world. And I could see him making a much better run at that now that Brown isn’t on the team.

I don’t think there is a year he should have won it, I think that the team he had around him hurt his case compared to his peers. I do think 2023 and 2024 were his best arguments and that he did not get the level of votes that others in similar circumstances typically get. Tatum’s 2023 season is would likely be competitive with wemby/SGA/Jokic.

After that it’s mostly a matter of media narratives and if people think that the Jaylen brown trade was a big loss (it was not, and I think most of his hype was thinly disguised Tatum hate), he will likely win a pity MVP the way that Drose or Kobe did.

He’s roughly on par with Tatum as a scorer while being significantly worse in every aspect of the game. Cade brings a much better passing game than Tatum will ever have, so he’s fairly likely to pass him at one point.
