After two seasons of the joint venture between MSG Networks and YES, Gotham Sports Network will be dissolving with Knicks and Nets games being streamed exclusively on DAZN. This deal is expected to be a precursor to 7 other teams in search of a home after deals have fallen through on Fanduel Sports Network:

DAZN will become the exclusive digital home of the MSG and YES networks this fall, in a breakthrough announcement Wednesday that is a likely precursor to deals with seven more NBA teams in the coming days and weeks.

While paying undisclosed rights fees and sharing advertising revenue, DAZN will stream all non-national game broadcasts for MSG’s Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils and Sabres and YES Network’s Yankees and Nets – effectively a takeover of the entire Gotham Sports direct to consumer app.

In addition, multiple NBA sources told SBJ that DAZN is close to acquiring full exclusive local broadcast rights next season for the T’Wolves, Cavaliers, Pacers, Spurs and Grizzlies, as well as DTC-only arrangements with the Magic and possibly the Hornets.

While DAZN would not comment specifically about those seven pending deals, CEO Shay Segev did tell SBJ, “We are in discussion with many other teams, and I can promise you that more teams will follow very soon.”

The Cavaliers, T’Wolves, Pacers, Spurs, Grizzlies, Magic and Hornets were not available for comment Wednesday morning, with sources saying they will likely remain silent until the deals become official.

Barring any setbacks in negotiations and pending league approval, DAZN is set to become the digital home to nine overall NBA franchises – the first two being the Knicks and Nets – nearly a year after the London-based platform began pursuing U.S. sports properties.

Messaging from the NBA has been for teams to get one year deals with plans at the current moment being to create a national RSN with most NBA teams starting next offseason. The article mentions that while the Knicks and Nets are on multi year deals, the seven other teams listed are either asking for one year deals or one year exit clauses.

Assuming the rumored deals here are accurate, the only two teams with no announced plans for next season at the moment are the Thunder and Clippers (both have aired a handful of games over the air last season, for what it’s worth).

The last two former Main Street NBA franchises – the Thunder and Clippers – are likely headed a different route. Sources said the Thunder – who control their ad sales – will finalize local OTA and DTC deals that do not involve DAZN. Other sources said the Clippers are likely to choose an OTA station, perhaps The CW’s KTLA in L.A., or launch their own network similarly to what baseball’s Angels have done. They could also reprise the ClipperVision DTC platform for streaming.
