I actually think he won’t place in the top 2 for the rest of his career, mainly because of how the Nuggets are managed.

the jokic situation is historically unusual. it’s extremely rare for a player to place 1st or 2nd in MVP voting for 7 straight years - bird and magic pulled it off but their teams stayed competitive throughout. jokic is trying to do it while his team is visibly rebuilding, which creates an implicit narrative problem with voters.

the unspoken modern criterion isn’t just stats, it’s “would this team be a lottery team without this player?” jokic still clears that bar. but the second question voters are increasingly asking is “did they win enough with him?” and that’s where the watson situation, the salary hell, and the playoff flameout start to compound. the individual case hasn’t changed - the team context has.

Barring injuries to Shai or Wemby the streak prob ends this season sadly. I still think he’ll be better than Victor but team record won’t show it. Legendary run though

For MVPs, its about right but I think there is room for more accolades since he is in his prime. Best to leave this for after his career ends.

As for the 2nd place vote streak, this is probably the first year that that streak can be broken. Players who stood out in the playoffs and regular season w/o MVPs like Wemby, Luka, Cade, and Brunson will be looked at kindly over Jokic, SGA, etc.

Imo, MVP is now tied to team seeding just as much as it is tied to individual performance. If the Nuggets don’t perform well in the standings despite Jokic’s performance, then voters (plus us) will subjectively and unconsciously devalue Jokic’s play over others in the running.

eh, I’m not sure what Shai or Joker would need to do to get it, the people’s overall feeling and vibes don’t seem to want to give it to either one while I feel like people will be jumping at the bits to give an MVP to a young player that makes a leap and has a great season, be it a Wemby, maybe an Ant or something

I still don’t get how you lead the NBA in assist and rebounds and top 10 in PPG and don’t win MVP AND 3rd seed in the West

So yeah….unless he can do better that and Denver do better (closer to Spurs and OKC)

It’s over unless he can get that early season form back last season when he was briefly in lead for MVP race/odds before the injury and do it all season long

I think we’re going to see a reversion to the traditional formula of the MVP going to the most impactful player on a 1- or 2-seed team. That’s unlikely to be the Nuggets. It also won’t be Shai because voter fatigue will prevent a threepeat as MVP. That makes the most likely candidates Wemby or Brunson.

I think he’s got the right amount of MVPs, maybe too many 2nd place MVP results though. Ultimately its just a media narrative award. You need the numbers plus the aura of a strong media narrative.

He will almost always have crazy numbers but its been too many straight playoff stinkers since the title that they feel empty not impactful, especially if they end up a 4-6th seed. Not to mention the rise of Wemby has suddenly raised the value of defense in the award that wasnt there before

Jokic averaged a triple double and not winning MVP says the voting is bogus and rigged. It’s not about the best player anymore, it’s about changing it up to refresh interest of viewers. Commercialized trophy basically.

He’s going to keep finishing top three until he exits his prime. The only guys I can see having a better season (assuming health) are SGA or Wemby. Even then, Jokic by the metrics had one of his best years last year so I don’t see some impending fall off.

I like his chances of continuing the streak. He was the frontrunner last year before he got hurt. SGA fatigue is starting to settle in, so he’s a decent bet to win this year if he stays healthy. The team is just good enough to qualify him for MVP conversations, but bad enough that they can’t really rest him too much.

Joker’s success depends on AG. So as long as he’s front court partners with AG, he’ll stay top 2 in my opinion.

I think it’s done for. Though it’s a regular season award postseason performance has impacted players over the last decade or so. I think that’s why Giannis only has one IMO. I think some voters will reconsider where they position Jokic against the rest of the league because of how badly he was exposed defensively against the Timberwolves 

After last years playoff his aura is gone. Time to pony up

He deserved one or two more. Voter fatigue is a shame. MJ and Bron both deserved quite a few more.

With Wemby’s rise, Jokic will stay in the top 3 for voting in the near future. Team success will be a big factor and the Nuggets are going to struggle to be near the top of the West.

Too many MVPs imo. But I guess it’s an accurate representation of this stat nerd era when a guy who doesn’t play defense and can’t win in the playoffs unless he gets literally the easiest path in league history can still win MVP on the 5th and 10th best records in the league.
