but yeah, a ronaldo signing is probably a bigger deal than a lebron signing worldwide partly due to the absurd nature of football(soccer) signings financially and partly due to it being a more global sport, although i would guess neither has ever been as globally famous as michael jordan was at his peak.

You’ll have kids that never saw Ronaldo in his prime buying fucking Al Hilal shirts today. Same with Messi and Inter Miami. You barely see basketball jerseys in comparison. The top 2 most followed people on social media across all platforms are Ronaldo and then Messi, who has 300m less followers. With how much football has continues to grow and the social media element, I don’t think it’s even possible for MJ to have been more famous, just based on how accessible and worldwide it is at the moment. I think the World Cup was a real introduction and eye opener for many Americans into just how big football is

i had just gotten to the (south) jersey shore (all philly fans there) and walked into the liquor store when i got the notification. yelled “holy shit lebron is a sixer!” i was already sporting my sixers hat. the people working the counters yelled “i just got that notification too! no way!!” and we all cheered.
everywhere we went, that’s all anyone was talking about. the bands at the bars were playing the sixers song, everyone was in their sixers gear and high fiving. it was incredible, unbelievable news.
you have to understand the turn around from how we all felt about this team just 2 months ago. the news is insane, but within the context, it all just felt surreal.
