Arena schedules probably care. I mean they need to book concerts, events, etc. Putting together an NBA schedule is super complex I imagine.

For real. Also, he went to a popular big market team that was already going to have plenty of nationally televised games. They probably only had to move a handful of games around on the broadcast schedule.

If any AI made the schedule we’d have a handful of matchups where teams play 12 times.

If I see that the Celtics are playing 76ers on the first game I will be pissed. We play them twice in the preseason schedule that dropped.

I’m sure there is some planning that goes into scheduling on certain days. Obviously holiday games being the big ones.

There is a lot to think about lots of shared stadiums

Lol. These arenas don’t just sit empty until basketball starts. It’s 30 arenas who are all scheduling NBA games, concerts, and other sporting events. It’s a very complex schedule to put together and it needs to happen as early as possible.

I don’t think we as fans need to care, but it makes sense that the league would encourage Lebron to not take too long.

Lebron definitely threw a wrench into it though. For the past few years every Lakers Warriors game would be on national television mainly for LeBron vs Steph(even though more often than not one or the other was out). Now the Lakers Warriors games aren’t as marketable meanwhile the networks are gonna bid for the Sixers Warriors games this year.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they drafted 8-9 different schedules based on which team he’d go to and then once he picked the Sixers they finalized everything.

It’s not like the nba teams all own their stadiums outright and never have other events in there, there’s a lot to consider when it comes to this kind of scheduling.

They do over 150 high priority games by hand first, then use third party software specifically designed for NBA scheduling to fill out the rest, but it still goes through many iterations and requires hands on refinement. It’s definitely not “all done by computers”.

You have to factor in that it effects multiple potential opponents.

Say NBC wants a Sunday night Lakers vs Lebron matchup. If it’s Miami, then you’re also probably going to schedule the Lakers @ Magic, and maybe even a Lakers @ Hawks on that same road trip for LA. If he goes to Philly, then that also might mean you’re scheduling a Lakers @ Washington, and Lakers @ Toronto game as well. For the latter scenario you also have to factor that those are 3 venues that have an NHL team too so that also has to be worked with.

I’m not crying too many tears for The NBA having to wait 2 weeks, but it does put a lot of schedules on pause beyond just the potential Lebron suitors
