wnba games rule because of how cheap they are. legit wonderful experience for basically no money if you’re used to NBA/MLB/NFL prices.

That doesn’t make any sense. Attendance is reported as tickets distributed, not even tickets sold. SO tickets to corporate sponsors count even if they aren’t used.

ANd yes, this means teams can announce any attendance number they like. Reported attendance is meaningless.

Its never sold out. And they would rather have an empty 1k seat than lower it to a price that real fans are willing to pay. I went to game 7 of the finals 2 years ago and there were 2 entire rows empty behind us. The price of those tickets never went below 1200 even 1 hour before tipoff

i know ASG Saturday wasn’t sold out. They had tickets day-of when they FINALLY released single-session tickets and they were so stupidly priced that they didn’t sell. I was checking every day, you could only get ASG Saturday tickets as part of some sort of premium experience package deal. I have a good friend who is a season ticket holder in the wall and he never was offered a general sale either.

As a side note, the Clippers sales team has zero fucking shame, insisting to my friend that if he didn’t renew right away that their top draft pick was gonna mean the team was gonna sell out on a season ticket basis. Just the most shameless bullshitters in LA just behind Spencer Pratt

They killed the fan experience to sell advertising. Used to be where at least you could enjoy the aura of the players and the atmosphere.

Wnba games are great to attend and fun to watch. I take my daughter to games all the time since it’s affordable compared to Knicks tickets. They are always well attended and competitive, too many haters here. 

And they all wanna pretend they wouldn’t get cooked by the average WNBA role player.

The average high school team in the us has players taller, stronger and faster than the wnba players. They would get smoked.

Comparing the nba and wnba as the highest level of competition in the world for the respective players is one thing (all star ticket sales feels appropriate) and maybe even stats to give context to dominance (like Caitlin’s recent crazy performance compared to what nba players have done).

But the “my high school team would smoke the Liberty” comments, whether technically right or wrong, reveal so much about the person making the comment and invoke toxic discussion where no one really wins

Its not misogynistic to like men’s basketball more than Woman’s.

I dont like the game because its played by woman, but i could go to any AAU tournament and see better ball. The woman’s game is slow and zero dunks. To say its better than the NBA is just ludicrous.

The WNBA one was crazy - im all for flaming the NBA all star - it sucks, thats been beaten to death. But the WNBA playing like that for a league trying to grow its following is so embarassing.

At least the NBA guys we know can hit a layup, the WNBA is not good enough to be acting this way

A lot of newer fans probably watched the WNBA all star game for the first time in 2024, and that one was super competitive because the game was an “Olympians vs WNBA all stars” format since the olympics took place that summer. So, a lot of fans thought that the all star game was like that every single year, so this years game and last years game being uncompetitive took them by surprise.

This is crazy to me. It’s like the WNBA players are like “Look at us! We don’t care about the all-star game just like the NBA”

But somehow it’s soooo much worse. Not a great look for the WNBA.

To be honest, I’d actually love to see a friendly two on two competition with the W and NBA. Seems like a lot of NBA players grabbed a WNBA buddy (or in Bam’s case, a future wife).

The entire concept had more appeal when it was legitimately difficult to see or hear from players across the league aside from 3-4 stars occassionally doing press for something.

At that point, the all-star game and dunk contests were amazing because of the novelty of it.

Now that sort of content is extremely easy to find and watch.

All the hand-wringing about any other cause or issue with the all-star weekend or game in ANY sport that doesn’t acknowledge this baseline reality is insincere and unserious.

It’s simply a format that has aged out of appeal as technology and ubiquity have increased.

The NY Times article discusses this. Stadium capacity was around 18k and attendance around 15k. The game was apparently sold out, but a large portion of tickets were reserved for corporate entities and such, who probably don’t care about missing the game. The tickets actually available for public sale sold out, but apparently that was only about half the capacity of the stadium.
