Watching this reinforces my opinion of why the spurs aren’t scared to drive on almost any big. They have to play against this guy all the time. What’s a 7’1” Chet when you’ve had to scrimmage and drill against Wemby weekly?

Wemby obviously gets practice with his defense,timing and shot blocking but his teammates get the benefit of going against the best rim defender in the world so often
It’s pretty irreplaceable experience, to have the friendly spar sessions with someone like Wemby.
You can even see it briefly in this clip just the strategies they use for ball movement and footwork to get around him and his wingspan.
Also helps when you have the best finishing guard prospect in years

Tobias is also a lights out iso option against smaller players. A lot of pistons regular season possessions were “run PNR for 14 seconds, then let Tobias score on a guard.” The playoffs really highlighted how much he can eat off of guards switching on to him.

The problem is more so that he commits so hard that it gives players the opening to get around him or draw a foul in the first place. He tends to actually leave his feet when standing straight up is usually enough.

They lost the Finals cause Wemby couldn’t defend properly in the 2nd halves, because he was gassing himself in the first halves.
It’s crazy that by a bunch of metrics Wemby played the best playoff defense in NBA history and people still are blaming losing the finals on his defense. Not the fact that the Spurs offense would’ve been 45th in the league in the regular season.

Yeah, let’s not go the other way and act like he’s a star. He’s a solid player but you can’t always rely on him. Which is fine as long as he’s a 3rd or 4th option. Harper looks like the real deal so if he becomes a good second option then Harris or Fox being the 3rd guy on most nights would be ideal for them.
I don’t think anyone is claiming he’s a star. Solid player, likable veteran presence, but the consensus seems to be at one point he was getting paid like a star when it was clear he wasn’t. He was second option for the Pistons, but I think if you’re expecting to win a championship he should be third option at best.
Tobias will be missed. Probably going to do a lot for the young locker room as well.
I know they aren’t going 100%, but its really impressive that these guys can get their shots off and make them on a consistent basis with wemby right in their grills.
