He’s hit unrestricted free agency but from the 6ers renouncing his bird rights because they didn’t want to keep him and to open up the space to go after Paul George, not because Harris bet on himself. He then signed a 2-year deal with the Pistons so they didn’t have his Bird rights and now the same with the Spurs.

Dude has made a ton of cash but from signing the big contracts he is offered not from turning them down.

Malcolm Brogdon and John Collins probably don’t win that bet in the apron era though, those are exactly the kind of players who end up with less than they could have locked in earlier in this era

Kuminga has always showed enough for the 150M contract at times. He issue is he shows that level of play then puts up 8ppg on 40% shooting with poor D for too long a period.

Yup him and Cuban discussed it on a podcast. They didn’t offer him the money at the beginning of the season and then when Luka was out and Brunson started going on a heater they offered him the extension which he turned down because as the kids say, “yesterday’s price is not today’s price”.

He turned down the Mavericks contract before that and got more..

I think Brunson’s different contracts are getting conflated here. The one that makes the most sense in this context is him turning down Dallas’ rookie extension offer, which was reportedly 4 years, 55 million in 2022 and testing unrestricted free agency, where the Knicks gave him 4 years, 104 million.

Brunson turned down Dallas’ extension offer before he became a free agent. Felt he had outplayed 4 yrs for 55M and he turned out to be right.

Why would denver give him a more expensive, shorter contract though?  

Issue is Watsons play style just seems so injury prone, don’t get me wrong he’s at least worth 20M but we could absolutely see a situation where Watson gets 25M becomes another Braun or worse because of injury.

Watson much more potential than Braun at this point.

Does he? He had a great year last year, but he has played 2000 minutes less. They were picked in the same draft and are about the same age, and Braun is better in every statistical total because he plays more.

Braun is one year removed from back to back 38% shooting from 3 seasons. He was obviously injured last year. Some of y’all’s nuggets knowledge is embarrassing.

Yea Braun has been a reliable starter since his rookie season, including a solid 17 point game in the finals as a rookie. Peyton is fantastic and has a high upside, but he hasn’t proven himself consistently like Braun. I hope he does, especially with the Nuggets haha

IMO, the NBPA really needs to figure out a way to fix the RFA process.

Guys like Watson had teams that would gladly pay them and were capable of making the cap space work, but because it required renouncing bird rights, they were left out to dry. Order of operations shouldn’t matter that much.

In this case, LAC was willing to offer ~$22M+ for Watson. They could have easily made that cap room as well, but it would have required renouncing Mathurin’s rights. Mathurin is now in limbo, whereas if LAC was able to make a conditional offer (i.e. we will renouncing Mathurin if Denver doesn’t match), then both of these guys likely have contracts already.

People need to read up on how the NBA used a PR firm to push the new CBA (pre, during and post CBA) and turned the fan sentiment against players. I think it’s the same firm that the MLB are currently using and you can see similar tactics being used before both CBA negotiations.

The 2nd apron is doing its job and punishing a team for overpaying Jamal Murray and Christian Braun.

It’s not actually possible for all players to be “squeezed” at the same time. Total player salaries add up to a fixed percentage of revenue (51%).

If any particular group of players is squeezed, someone else makes more in return.

Role/sub star players only get 1 maybe 2 shots to get paid - it’s their choice to try to get as much as they want. It definitely backfires at times, but it also doesn’t backfire in other situations. Spencer Jones declined a minimum (~2 million a year) for multiple years from the Nuggets mid-season to nearly triple his salary to $12 million over 2 in RFA.

I don’t get why fans are so inclined to tell players to not bet on themselves. Sure, it sometimes doesn’t work out, but it also does work out if the player lives up to the potential they believe to be at.

Like we literally just saw Walker Kessler refuse a ¹⁴⁰⁄₅ to get a ¹³⁰⁄₄. Brunson turned down a ⁴⁄₅₅ and then got a ⁴⁄₁₀₄ with the Knicks. Bruce Brown took a one year with Denver and then got a 2/45M. Monk took a minimum and then got his 4/80M.

Now, do we know which direction Watson will go? No. But if he sustains his growth and glimpses we saw, then ⁷⁰⁄₄ would simply be a huge underpay.

He’s young enough that a team could eat all 4 years and he’d still be resigning in his prime.

I’m not sure about there being zero evidence. He was ballin in January, before getting hurt, when he was tasked with being the number 1 option while Jokic was out.

The last we saw of Watson is it looked like he had taken the next step. He has only improved since entering the NBA. He hasn’t had a starter role where he can put up numbers consistently and the one time we did it was probably more than we expected

You would obviously be paying for what you think Watson will become. If you look at the players on 20 mill, Watson isn’t far off those players and you would even hope he can surpass them.
