I think it’s just a lot of offseason analysis after a trade that showed maybe the biggest disparity in how the league valued a player vs the media and fans. So now people are catching up with Monday morning hindsight and of course it’s leading it to be overblown.

Reality is JB is a very polarizing player on the floor. He does a lot of things great, but has always had glaring weaknesses that were easily forgotten about when he won a finals mvp and then was the face of a 2 seed last year.

As a Celtics fan I’ll always love the guy for what he did for us, but he’s never belonged in the top 20 conversation, and he’s a constant over thinker that often gets in his own way on the floor. So he went from being way overvalued to undervalued, and the truth is in the middle.

His advanced stats. He is a ball stopper with mid shooting splits. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a great player.

I think he’s generally unlikable and he is a bit of a ball hog. Not even close to the worst in the league with either of those things, but he’s the flavor of the offseason to hate. Some truth in there, but it’s exaggerated.

People don’t like the admit it but owners and execs slandering players they trade pretty much always works. Everyone clowned the Luka trade but “he’s lazy, fat, and the worst defender in the keague” became common sentiment really quickly. You even had a not insignificant amount of people claiming mavs won the trade when Luka got injured. Celtics slandered Jaylen brown like crazy, though media and “inside sources claim” to paint him as a specific racial stereotype: the “uppity negro”. Thats why you saw all the claims of “he thought he was smarter than everyone else” “he wanted to be the nunber 1 option and clashed with ownership about it” etc. And it did stick for some people. You can argue all day about efficiency, +/-, bpm, whatever you else but owners love to slander star players they trade and media eats it up

Edit: Luka is not the worst defender in the league. He’s average, slightly below if you look at specific metrics, but the critique is how pervasive the slander of him became in the consciousness of nba fans leading to claims of mavs winning the trade. Which LOL

I feel like I was seeing comments in 2023 and 2024 about JB dribbling into traffic too much, passing it mediocre, losing the ball too frequently. The extrapolation to character is a more recent thing but it is hard to be an outspoken person who streams while playing basketball like that and not give off a certain impression.

Nephews here have little iPad brains with no short term memory so they just hop from hate train to hate train.

He’s always had this reputation. It’s just been more magnified recently. It kind of went away when he won FMVP but if they aren’t doing well, he’s always had that reputation. 

People have to remember analytics really disliked Jaylen even in college. Among all top 5 picks ever, he is the least liked analytics player, as a prospect not after the fact, who became a future NBA All Star.

He left Boston and went to Philly and a huge part of the basketball media are Boston guys. (The Ringer) More important I believe players like Brown who stream/podcast are shit talked by old school media because they pose a threat. They can interact with fans without the middle man of ESPN/Newspapers/etc. So now if you notice if any player has a podcast/stream they’re a “distract that hurts the team.”

It’s strange. I find him very irritating, but he was finals mvp and best player on a team that massively overachieved. If he was making 40 rather than 55, or whatever, I don’t think this would be an issue.

Its weird. He averaged a career high 5 assist per game last season which is great for a 2 or 3.

He’s never been a good passer and has often forced his shot. This hasn’t necessarily been a bad thing since the Celtics needed somebody who could create his shot, but being a subpar passer and subpar dribbler will lead to TO issues which look bad statistically.

But it all blew up when Jaylen said that this past season was his favorite one. There was probably more to it than just being the #1, but it was a bad luck when the team has had so much success through the years with him as the #2

Jaylen has always bought in and done everything he could to help the team. He just not that good at the margins and off-ball stuff. Sixers problem is not “will JB be mad”, I 100% guarantee you he’ll give everything on the court even if in a diminished role. Their problem is that in a diminished role his flaws start to overtake his qualities.

If you just look at his scoring totals or highlights, you get a different picture of him than if you actually watch him hoop.

Isolation scoring is very overrated but that’s his primary offensive weapon. And he’s not even that good at it! In the series where we came back against the Cs — this was just two months ago, y’all — he could not consistently get to his spots even when he was guarded by a (willing but) much-smaller defender like Tyrese Maxey. He kept settling for bad, contested midrange shots since he couldn’t get to the rim. He missed open shooters all the time bc he has tunnel vision. If he were five years younger, you would project him growing out of this. But he’s like 30.

He’s a mediocre shooter. He’s not a good passer. these days, if you are a scorer with the ball in your hands, you gotta be able to punish the defense with your gravity. He’s can’t do it.

As a Celtics fan, I can tell you 2 things

1. We got terrible value in return for Jaylen because he is a great player in his prime.

2. Jaylen plays selfish basketball and has serious issues with shot selection, turnovers, and dribbling. He is a scorer, not an offensive engine like Jayson Tatum.

76ers fans, when Jaylen is on a heater and guarding the other team’s best player it will be an incredible experience. When he is dribbling into 3 people and not passing or losing the ball off his foot while his teammates are open, it’s gonna be frustrating. You will have to live with these highs and lows because he is not an impactful off ball player.

Yeah, it’s a weird narrative, considering he spent years as the number two option without complaint and won a championship in that role.

This sub is hilarious. The switch up on Brown now that he’s not a Celtic is crazy. I remember when Brown had a disastrous 2023 playoff series and then we gave him the supermax and this sub was saying he was the worst contract in the league. Now the Celtics “did him dirty”, even though he said it was his favorite season of his career, and doubled down by saying he wished they played the entire series more like they did in game 7, the only game Tatum sat out. Dude is full of himself, glad I don’t have to support his antics anymore.

I always bring this up. It’s always been this theoretical thing. Brown and Tatum have never been a problem together. All they have done is win and compliment each other. I assume the perception Tatum was better really did bother Brown because it’s been brought up a lot but it’s hard to see how it’s been a problem on the court. I can’t imagine playing with LeBron James could be a problem
