The move was part of Bruce Ratner’s bid to develop Atlantic Yards with an arena in the middle that was supposed to service the NY Olympic bid. Jay was brought on as a representative for the borough.
And yes, moving to BK significantly increased the team’s evaluation, attendance, and secured it a top notch arena for decades. Even if the Knicks remain the most popular team in NY, this was always the correct business move.

It’s funny because in 2019 and especially in 2021 the Nets were pretty popular. 2019 the Nets had all the hype with getting KD and Kyrie and the Knicks had their worst year yet and looked like an old decayed carcass of a franchise. Then in 2021, they were really the hot shit and Barclays almost exploded during the playoff series with the Bucks while the Knicks were just happy to win a single playoff game against the Hawks.
