Jaylen Brown on livestream getting mid-range coaching
First time I heard an nba player tell someone to stop with the ass tapping.
Fr same. I thought that was actually mandatory.
Coach just wants good shooting mechanics and slap ass.
NO RAFI
ehhhhHHHH come oooOOnnnn
Friend to friend, Coach, you just threw that ass tap. Yeah you hit, but we want fundamentals.
I think it was cause he went out of his way to tap him on his ass. It wasn’t a walk by ass tap. Mf had to duck low, reach around and hit the tap.
“Bend over real quick Jaylen…”
ok but why
Ok .. but why not ?
Forget all net, tryna get all undies
Why be a couch if you dont get the perks?!
JD Vance has entered the chat court.
Must be from Dominican Republic
I mean we’re all from the Domincan Republic
It’s the big leagues Rafi. We’re all from the Dominican Republic
After ALL THAT ???
SLAP ASS!!!
Garcia
When you fine yourself at one in da morning with you hand in the air, an a horses ass…you know it’s bad.
They only want the ass taps in real games for encouragement
Ironically the best players in the league all have a middy package, but midrange shots are discouraged in the modern NBA
Discouraged for role players, not stars. Sga, embiid, jokic, Murray etc take lots of middies
Polar bear
The polar bear does take a lot of middies (and is good at them) so I mentioned him
Arlington
I understand that you’re talking about Murray. I’m just saying he is good at middies (also he was an all-“star”, so)
Just a weird example. Murray is a 1x all-star while the rest are mvps. Other players are better examples like KD
Or maybe they are stars because they can hit middies at an elite rate in game?
I don’t think teams are turning down efficient shots. All the guys you’ve mentioned are elite at creating space where there is none and scoring from the mid range.
This thread is hurting my head. Star players still shoot middies because they are creating shots for themselves and must shoot them. They are still ok shots for these star players. Mid rangers are BAD shots for ROLE players because role players are expected to spread the floor for their stars (aka get ya ass to the corner three mr tucker).
But what happens if there’s a role player that’s really good at mid range shots?
They play for Sacramento
And the Knicks
Then you get green light to shoot them on a championship team like Shaun Livingston
Those guys played 20 years ago; they don’t get PT now
Mikal Bridges played 20 years ago? He doesn’t get PT now?
They are told to stand in the corner and wait for the pass so they can take a 3
Exactly this. They are bad shots on average. Being elite means doing something much better than the average.
It’s also a volume thing, role players aren’t getting 20 shot attempts, so you got to get quality attempts for them. Like SGA can start 0 for 4 and end up 12 for 20, but not many others can.
Don’t forget Mikal bridges
That Brunson dude has a pretty solid midrange game too
Having a role player who can make those grenade middies whenever Brunson has to give it up is a blessing
Exactly. The midrange is where stars get to operate in the playoffs because that’s usually where there are cracks in the defense. And if the offense breaks down, that’s where a lot of guys end up after trying to create their own shot.
Also, sometimes you just need a bucket. A 47% middie is better than a 40% sometimes in late game situations.
Brunson erasure lol
Saying Embiid and Murray over Kawhi is such a weird choice🤔🤔
Cries in Devin Booker
If you’re good at it it’s a great shot, if not it’s pointless to take them
The middy is still useful just to keep the defense honest. Even most true blue analytics guys understand this by now. It’s a lot easier to keep the defense off balance if they know you can make shots anywhere on the court. Make a shot on the elbow every now and then and all of a sudden guys will stop sagging all the way off you the moment you step inside the 3 point line. It makes it even easier to get underneath the basket, which is the most efficient field goal in basketball.
Yeah it’s critical to have in the playoffs where teams are fighting tooth and nail to guard the 3pt line and right around the basket. You absolutely have to make them pay in the midrange. I always think about Kawhi’s playoff run with the raptors
Embiid and VJ both love the mid range too.
Calling it a package is the most 2k brainrotted shit ive seen here I think.
The 2ptr will never go away and it will still remain an important part of the game.
In any sport, being versatile is still critical to success.
You need to have back up tools when your primary tools aren’t working or the opponent has nuetralized them.
Perfect for stars when you need a bucket but the rest of the court is covered
Never want a role player taking one
If you’re unguarded, don’t take a middie take a 3 or at the rim.
Stars like Brown (SGA, Joker, etc.) are almost never left unguarded. Their training assumes they are tightly guarded, if they receive the ball tightly guarded at the 3 they dribble into a middie. Or if they drive to the rim and there are multiple rim protectors there so they pull up into a middie.
I would be very surprised if they are trained on catch & shoot middies, the middies for them are escape moves.
The threat of a middy is what opens up the rim possibilities. If teams know you can only score at the rim, they’ll just pack the paint against you.
It’s counters to counters to counters.
Which makes it crazy because it’s fundamentally taught
Its a serious weapon for people who have the ball a lot but aren’t prototypical athletes. Kawhi, brunson, old MJ, cp3, KD, luka, shai etc. Essentially if you aren’t a huge threat to cram it off the dribble, you need to have this.
That’s the point. Only stars should take midrangers because they are the best players.
Analytics vs how the game is played. The game is played so if you take away the efficient shots the midrange is where the best players play, however that becomes the least efficient shot, so you don’t shoot it at all, which changes how the defense guards you, which makes the midrange the space where the best players should play.
2 points vs 3 points but one sounds cooler than the other imo and keeps defense honest.
The midrange pull up is still an important part of read progressions in a pick and roll. Sometimes that’s the soft spot of a defense depending on how they run their coverage.
Don’t touch my ass got me dead
I think it was with the combination of the “please can you give it to me like that.”
“My bad”
What’s funny is it means he’s done it repeatedly already lmao
First and last time Lethal Shooter be on the stream
Just said it because he’s being a pouty bitch since the guy called him out for sloppily picking up ball on his previous jumpers.
Dudes ego is paper thin.
He kept saying “as a friend” before giving criticism lmao
Because these dudes can’t take much criticism once they reach the NBA.
It’s like all the rookies that always repeat back “yes sir” to their coaches but by year 3 they look like they wanna choke them out when being told some shit.
He probably saw what JB did to Okongwu’s face. Might catch a tiger elbow to the dome.
https://youtu.be/sR8oi1Qnmes?is=GPlB1yffF9h4uIfk
The best players never stop working on their game.
JB has weaknesses in his game for sure but when he played for the C’s it was clear he worked hard at them in the offseason. His handle isn’t great still but it’s leaps and bounds better than what it was even in the 2022 finals.
He needs to be a better passer straight up if he wants to positively impact the team he’s going to.
JB’s not going to be the primary or even secondary playmaker on the Sixers so I would disagree with that. He’ll make a positive impact regardless.
Are we sure he’s a Sixer at the start of the season? Why havent they announced him on the team?
haha what
Haven’t seen an official announcement from the team welcoming him onboard, just saying
FO probably knew they were still in the running for bron and wanted to wait to introduce them together. There’s no rush
Probably, just noting it… we’ve not announced guys before and its because the trade framework expanded
when?
The framework literally can’t expand at this point, the trade was finalized with the league.
Needs better bball IQ to begin with
Man I wish I had access to videos like this when I was a kid.
jb would be nasty with a lethal jab step with his speed. not a fan of whatever move he doing in the beginning. Rarely do I see it work in game but hes the pro and knows more than I do
I didn’t watch the stream so idk if this is what was happening but normally coaches have you add one step at a time even at pro level. So it’s jab -> dribble -> shoot. Then next drill is jab -> dribble -> dribble + push off -> step back J etc
Just to maximize your reps on the fundamentals and make sure you dont lose the form. And some drills aren’t to emulate in-game if they are just focusing on being able to dribble into pullup in rhythm.
i see. makes sense
The move at the beginning is probably when you have someone set a screen for you
Why is everything streamed lol
[deleted]
Also shows younger players the work they gotta do
I’m sure this is the real reason they do it
I mean it can be multiple reasons? Idk what the issue is.
It’s not the money.
Source: Me, guy who’s made a living on youtube/twitch for over a decade.
JB is not a big streamer. The thousands a month he makes streaming mean nothing to him. He earns $80m a year before brand deals.
He’s addicted to the attention.
Well attention leads to fans which leads to merch sales and sponsors. Gotta capture the markets.
What about..you know..just playing basketball? Like how Jordan became a global icon without any social media? Idk this seems very needy like reminding me of young socialite Ben Simmons summer videos
I’m not sure if you’re aware, but Jordan is the GOAT. Jaylen Brown is not. And Jaylen Brown does indeed play basketball.
Any advice for people looking to try content creation?
Daily uploads are the most assured path to success. Mr Beast does it with expensive but amazing content but the more certain path to success is to do something you like and not to quit.
Check out this guy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzDj0B_UEJs
You know he was traded to the sixers right? Why are you shit talking your own guy
Because it’s just extra money to be made while doing what you’re already doing.
yaeh cos he def needs the extra pocket change to his hundreds of millions lol.
Its a great way to showcase, inspire, market, and just plain outreach. Especially for a player that doesnt have a bug name shoe deal, or agency deal. He has to get himself out to the people for his platform. Others dont do this because they have the agents and PR to put them on Lemon Daddy billboards and commercials.
Streaming is JBs way of using whats now to get to his fanbase and grow his fanbase.
I don’t mind this one lol. But I get your point.
Why would you be upset at the ability to see a top player train? It’s not forced on you
He doesn’t seem upset to me?
Why you assume I’m upset?
It’s how the new generation engages with fans tbh. Twitch was a big part of a lot of Gen Z’s entertainment in their early years, and especially during COVID .
new gen loves it, rather this than a video game imo.
I think he wants social media attention with twitch
Bro, if I was young and developing, I’d kill to be able to watch the training regimen of elites. See what and how they doin things. That’s insight.
yeah when I was 12 I was watching fucking mystery mavs videos on youtube. if I could have been watching Steve Nash drills instead I would have killed for the opportunity
Seriously. Who watching this shit?
I don’t know but I liked it. I’ve never seen a NBA player practicing with a coach 1 on 1 like this unedited before. I’ve only seen heavily edited clips where they don’t show the real process.
Honestly better than 99% of the shit being streamed this is cool to see
Are they also rock climbing on that gym
Yeah I was just seeing that. But no padding on the floor. Wild
nothing wild about it; the padding rolls out and you can literally see the auto belay setup
In the playoffs mid range is important because teams have proven that you can lose a 7 games series because your 3 ball isn’t falling enough in 4 of the games.
Yeah I don’t know how all these nerds with their (.35 * 3 is better than .50 * 2) logic, somehow forgot about the concept of variance. You don’t get to carry over the excess points you score in the games where you’re shooting well, into the games where you’re not.
I miss him so much it hurts.
Celtics organization will forever go down in history for making one of the worst decisions of all time.
PLEASE RESPECT THE ART OF SHOOTING
Ja approves this message
his release is slow as fuck
I think he’s just working on the mechanics
You ain’t never work on your jumper before huh
“His shoelace isn’t tied right” ahh comment
No .. I only work on my dumper
In-game he looks like MJ
Defenders all look slower when that shot go in
He’s practicing… obviously he’s been working out for way longer than this clip. Players get tired if you didn’t know
Jaylen streaming midrange work is funny until he starts hitting 55% from there and defenses realize the math changed.
That would be a 14% jump from last season so I don’t think we should count on that happening
edit: alright with more recent data it’s more like a 10% jump. that’d still involve him jumping from ~league average to beyond MJ’s career peak in one offseason
He only shot 41% on mid range shots last year?
Shouldn’t be a surprise given the discourse about his inefficiency
And he can only go right
Yes
No, 2 years ago he shot 41% from 10-16’ and 44% from 16-3p. Last year he shot 45% from 10-16 and 43.5% from 16’-3p. I’m too lazy to do the math on the blended mid range actuals, but neither one of those years equal 41%.
I’m a certified JB hater, but let’s stick to the actual facts lol
First half of the year his metrics were MJ-level from there
Not gonna happen unless he’s doing some other, secret mid range training and this is just a decoy. His fundamentals are shockingly bad- compare his balance and transition from dribble to shot to same, Dame’s.
Oh man..the training/gym videos are out..
I mean JB streams himself working out pretty often lol
Gently teasing for another “best shape of my life” report from someone
Hype hype hype! 😁
Jaylen’s greatest strength is that he greatly improves every offseason
Working on still going right I see
He gets traded from the celtics and suddenly the left hand jokes are almost never used anymore
On the court is usually the one and only time you can slap another man on the ass and it be okay and not seen as anything else or taken out of context
Usually
Quit touching my ass bro
Huh, it’s been like 2 months of off season and I haven’t seen a Zion buff pic yet. Did I miss it?
U did
Is this the new norm?
Jaylen please turn on multi mono for your stream audio, it’s just in the left ear, you’re supposed to be smart.
Idk if that was for the stream but the stop tapping me on the ass was to funny
Bro I like that “ Stop tapping me on my Ass”, no funny business here😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why’s he only going right?
Lol why he tell that man to stop tapping him on his ass on stream. 😂😂😂 I would have pulled him to the side after the stream for that.
For real, what’s with all the ass touching in the league
Take a seat. Ball belongs to leballhog now
is that lethal shooter
Coach: taps JB ass JB: “you want all net” Coach: “PLEASE GIVE ME ALL NET”
Don’t touch my ass lol
Smart guy
He only went right /s
thlap ass
He do too much
Huh huh. Huh 🏀🗑️
Nice to see great players in the lab.
If he can figure out his handle and get effective going left, they’d probably have to pay him $1B/5 yrs. 🤣😂🤣
Tatum talking about not wanting to play with a know it all and heres a video of JB being argumentative with his coach during shooting drills.
wait since when was jaylen taking mid range tips
C
JB’s ability to close out games, and LeBron’s playmaking—that might just be the last piece of the puzzle for the Sixers to win a title.
The last piece is embiids health
But why? Keep that shit to yourself.
He was not elite in mid range, he shot 41% from it
That is so bad that is the equivalent of shooting 27% from three, that’s why teams want 3s
Fundamentals…travel, everyone a travel. He jabs then lifts the pivot before the dribble.
lifting the pivot foot does not constitute a travel
Lifting your pivot foot before dribbling is a travel.
it is not lol. not at any level. stepping again with your pivot foot before releasing the ball for shot, pass, or dribble is
NBA rules section XII on travelling:
FIBA rule 25.2.1:
HS rules section 44 article 3 c)
The pivot foot may not be lifted before the ball is released to start a dribble
Any more levels you want me to quote the official rulebook on?
It’s a difference of 0.05 seconds though. Do you really think that should be called? You travel the same way when you play homie.
Called out by his coach, yes.
This “travel” is never called in the NBA. So not sure what the point of that would be from his coach there.
Actually just made a video on this concept last week.
You know it’s really crazy to me. I have no idea who this coach is like absolutely no clue whatsoever have never seen him in my life and he’s talking like this to Jaylen Brown. He’s talking to Jaylen Brown like a travel basketball coach. This has got to be one of the worst examples of coaching I’ve ever seen in my life. He’s so overly aggressive, not giving any actual constructive criticism on Jaylen’s body and instead just making vague statements like ‘you threw that one’. Absolutely ridiculous behavior to treat another grown man like that. Just another wannabe loser who didn’t actually make it to the league and thinks he knows better than a guy who actually does this professionally. The coach is no better than Stephen A Smith.
Is this dude now the most attention seeking player in the NBA or what
kinda hard to say after we just had 3 weeks of the lebron show clogging up the airwaves
So many people here didn’t want JB last year. He was the king of the mid range. Led the league with 736 at 52.7%
? He shot 41%. Where’d you get that number from?
Google AI
That’s way off. He’s never been a good mid range shooter but last year he was horrible.
Doesn’t that list him at 68.8%? I watched almost every Celtic game last year and he was killer from the mid range. Why do you say he was horrible?
You’re looking at the restricted area column not mid-range. I sorted it by mid range field goal attempts in the link. Scroll to the right.
I’m saying he was horrible because he took 5.2 mid range shots a game and made 41.3% of them which is objectively bad. For reference Shai also took 5.2 mid-range shots a game but he made 54.9% of them.
You’re completely right. That’s my bad. Still, I wouldn’t call that horrible man. A lot of teams could really use that kind of offense.
It’s not the absolute worst efficiency in the list, but it is noticeably worse than everyone else taking 5+ attempts a game. For a ‘star’ player, that’s really not good. If he were a role player he would’ve lost that green light a long time ago.
The Celtics had the 2nd best offense in the league too. He wasn’t forced to take a lot of these types of shots. Sometimes guys are forced to take bad shots because they’re the only ones who can score. That wasn’t really true for the Celtics last year.
Brother you need to watch the games closer he shot 41% from midrange.
There’s a reason the advanced metrics don’t like him.
