The Cards weren’t stolen. They were bankrupted in Chicago because the Bidwells sucked as owners from the offset (1930s). Lamar Hunt and a group tried to buy them, the NFL refused and when Hunt and the others started the AFL in response, the NFL moved the Cards to St. Louis to avoid it becoming an AFL market and to give the Cards some relief since the Bidwells sucked at competing against the Bears for attendance and money.
It’s honestly the same with the Rams moving to St. Louis as well. They never stole teams, they were the stopping ground for teams nearing bankruptcy due to bad ownership.
I could see San Diego, Cincinnati, or KC/STL being interested in having a team, but can’t imagine any of them making the sort of grand sweeping money black hole gesture that Dundon wants. Seattle and LV will be getting teams anyway and won’t feel the need to bid against themselves to poach a different team. I think the team stays, but at the same time my state government is offering unlimited money to try to poach the Bears to backwater town in rural indiana so who knows.

What will happen is the arena will be completely funded by tax dollars. The lease the proceeds the Blazers sign with the city will go into a maintenance fund. The ownership group will have to invest close to a billion in the surrounding area. It’s the same deal he signed with Raleigh. It’s a win/win for everyone.
Why would it cost that much to move to another city? Expansion will be $7-10B but relocation will be substantially less.

Being the only draw in town means a LOT in terms of ticket prices, merch sales, etc. All you have to do is look at OKC and Denver. OKC is a smaller market but being the only draw in town they have a big and dedicated fan base that is absolutely rabid whenever the team is good. Ever since Seattle paid for the Seahawks stadium PNW politicians haven’t wanted to spend a large chunk of constituent money on arenas. So that makes sense considering both cities/states aren’t exactly flush with cash right now. I do think a deal will get done eventually but it will probably be pretty ugly in the meantime. If they pushed out renovation plans a few years it would probably be more palatable
One of the reasons there’s ostensibly been a push for renovations to get going ASAP is that Portland is hosting the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 2030.

Not even a Blazers fan, but is there anyway general NBA fans can help? I am pretty sure it is unanimous among fans that Portland should keep their team. Great fanbase, and history. Where can we contact/email to assist? We should all make daily phone calls to Tom Dunedin’s office and email him. Make it know his selfish bum ass can’t just do what he likes.
