Yeah but you need more context on that… the Magic deal got restructured a couple times. He only actually got paid $1m in four seasons. For 5 seasons he was paid $2.5m.

E.g. in 85-86 he was the highest paid player in the league, earning $2.5m. Even that year the 7th highest paid player was Ewing, earning $1.25m - a million was still superstar money. Salaries dramatically jumped up through Jordan’s career.

Take 1995-96 for example, Ewing was the highest paid player at $19m. Next was Drexler at $10m and so on.

That year Pippen made $2.925m. My rough calculations tell me that would put him in the range of 65-70th highest paid players that season.

The last year of the dynasty is the worst example. He made $2.75m. He wasn’t even all that close to breaking the top 100 best paid players. Stanley Roberts, Charles Smith, Stojko Vrankovic, Bobby Hurley and Jim McIlvaine were all making like a million dollars more than him. Magic is like if you were paying someone a $650m over 10 year contract today, Pippen is like if you were paying someone 60m for 5 years lol. Genuine role player money

Magic signed his 25-year contract in 1984, when the average salary was about $290K per year. Pippen signed his 7-year contract in 1991, when the average salary was just under $1 million. In other words, Magic was making more than 3x the average salary, and Pippen was making under 2x the average salary. It’s also worth noting that both sides knew that Magic wasn’t going to play 25 more years, so the $25 million was really for something like 8-10 years of expected production, making the true annual value (ignoring the deferral discount) something like 8x-10x the NBA average salary.

Both were absolute steals, but you can’t just compare the average salary of both deals.

Pippen’s salary in the first half that contract (during the first 3peat) was a top 20 and even a top 10 paid salary in the league for portions - it made him one of the highest paid players in the league over that stretch. It was pretty terrible in the second half, but even then was still above league average.

For context - in 92-93, Jordan made $4 million (#2 in the league) and Scottie made $3.425 million (#8 in the league). In 92, the salary cap was only $14 million. Salaries were not high until they increased significantly in the mid 90s and there was no luxury tax or max contracts.

Malone averaged 20 and 8 RPG the season before, and Payton averaged 20 and 8 APG. They were at the end of their careers, but they were still performing well, just like LeBron. In fact, I remember ESPN saying “we should just give them the ring and cancel the season, because no one is gonna stand a chance.” No one is calling this Philly team the clear cut favorites. We think of that superteam as a failure because they didn’t win, but they did get the Finals in a deeep West, and they could have had a real chance of winning if Malone didn’t end up getting hurt. Like LeBron, Malone had had a long career with really no major injuries up to that point, but age eventually caught up with him.
