Sure it’s his right to ask for it, but it’s also the agents responsibility to understand when and why it’s not going to happen. If he ends up taking the QO to prove a point because he won’t budge from his max demand and then shits his pants in the playoffs again, he’ll end up costing himself a lot more money than he’d lose by meeting them in the middle now. On the flip side, he would have to be utterly dominant in the playoffs next year, and they’d have to make an extended run to justify that max. It’s great to ask, better to be realistic.

Duren isn’t a good defensive player, period. Not even just compared to Wemby. He’s average at best, and that’s mostly propped up by strong defensive rebounding. He doesn’t protect the rim, he’s not a guy you want switching onto perimeter players outside of spot plays. You can filter statistics how you’d like, but they tell the story of a guy who improved across the board.

As someone who has watched every possession of his career, I can say with a lot of confidence he didn’t revert back to the player he was, whatever he reverted to was worse than we’ve ever seen from him. Whether that is a positive or negative depends on your perspective.

The magic completely ignored Ausar, and focused on blowing up every pocket pass and lob to Duren. After that, he lost his mental and never bounced back besides a decent game 7 vs Orlando.

He genuinely improved and started to self create with nice drives during the regular season even vs good comp. What happened in the playoffs looked all mental, motor, and confidence.

First off, none of that is too important if he doesn’t have good defense and ideally a jumper if we’re talking about if he is worth the max. People always focus on potential team structural issues that negated his offense in the playoffs, a lot of which is accurate or at least plausible. The issue is that ok lets say that problem is solved, now we have Duren who is a good rim running/PnR center along with a bag of moves to get to the basket from the high/low post. That player, IMO, is not worth a max either. He still can’t defend well, has virtually no jumper, and his rebounding was inconsistent and best and at times truly terrible against savvy playoff intensity bigs.

The second is that it was not ALL mental, motor, and confidence, there is definitely a skill element. The underlying factor in almost all of Durens weaknesses is he does not have a great instinctive feel for the game. Hes very bad at reading and adjusting to the dynamics within a singular game much less a series, and overall his own game is extremely rote and predictable. This works to an extent in the regular season grind but during the playoffs he is always a step behind and its very simple to gameplan for him.

I wonder how long it takes players to learn that the old league is done and that they don’t get to be “offended” by front offices trying to properly value them instead of just paying anyone that is a fringe all star.

In this CBA if he didn’t have the bad post season he was probably going to not exceed 40m per year. With the bad post season he’s probably looking between 25-35m per.

Best case scenario might be to sign a short term deal or a deal with a bunch of player options. Like 4 year 100m but with 2 player options or something.

Gives him a guaranteed bag so he doesn’t fumble security. But also allows him to get out quickly and sign the big time contract if he sheds the bad post season label

For me that’s just all the power players wrenching back leverage and that finding it’s new equilibrium. Agents used to have teams over a barrell and I don’t think that’s as true anymore.

When the rules first changed agents still had the power of precedence. Teams now have evidence both in terms of other deals to point too that are below the old market values for all types of players. And the evidence of moves like the JB move they can point to and say you can play for us on a lower salary or you can go somewhere else.

Some players might not care but I think the net effect will be the tier b & c stars getting lower aav contracts. And teams willing to let dudes walk or trade them to more desperate teams.

The problem for Duren is that no one is going to offer him that money. We are in a world where exceptional circumstances will cause a team to pay more than one player the max and keep them on the team for the duration of that contract.

Duren, at this stage in his career, is simply not good enough to be the best player on a playoff team. That’s the new bar for a max. If he truly believes he can demonstrate that level of skill and talent, he will simply need to play out his final year and bet on himself. If he does well, a team will attempt to acquire him and build around him.

At 35 mil a year, he’s worth the risk because of him potentially getting better (he’s only 22) and being an all star on a fantastic value contract. At a max (or even 40-45+ mil a year) the cap space is not worth the risk.

Thats how you get really favorable contracts, by taking a risk on a player and buying low and then being proven right for believing in them. But of course that comes with risks, but the cost is lower at a lower contract

I’m a big JD fan and wanted the team to draft him outright so was obviously happy they ended up trading for him but if he can’t realize that type of deal would hurt the team then it just might be best for them to ship him to a team willing to give him that. Watching teams finally have the balls to not cavs in to these middle tier guys in contract negotiations has been awesome. There are guys who want big money deals who don’t deserve it. Not to say they aren’t good players, but good players with big flaws or consistency issues shouldn’t be making max contracts.

Quentin Grimes, Cam Thomas, and Giddey last year. Duren, Mathaurin, and Watson this year.
