Steven Adams casually single-handedly carrying a massive log across the beach to help throw together a bonfire
He would have excelled in any era
Stone Age included
He would’ve been on the second stop in Odyssey 😂
When I saw the actors playing the Laestrygonians and how big they were I though they should’ve all been to the leagues lmao
That movie is special man…
Good ole forced perspective. The stuntmen playing the Laestrygonians were all 7 ft according to Matt Damon. Likewise for Odysseus’ crew, they used body doubles under 5 ft. Damon’s body double in particular was a female stunt performer.
Did not know this. Wild
He’d pull the Trojan horse into Troy by himself
It’s not Troy, mate.
It’s not like we’ve incurred the wrath of Poseidon mate. We’re on a bloody beach.
Duh. Everyone knows he played for Pittsburgh and not Troy State.
Yup, and he was very lanky back in college. His log carrying prowess came later.
Oi, what’s this then
Dude would have been a straight up problem in the middle Bronze Age lol
Bro is a straight up problem in all eras. Makes Khal Drogo look like Napoleon
Cool thing is on the beach many times a bleached log like that weighs half as much as you expect.
Stone Age especially!
He would have been MJ of the Neanderthal era
Hand him a club and he’d be some Stone Age chieftain
Stoner Age too
Idk, man. I’ve seen some Ogg highlights and those dudes went hard. Clubbing all day and night.
Then he could be unfrozen and get his law degree!
Bro would be fighting Achilles out on the battlefield
BOAGRIUUS!!
You definitely meant toyed with Achilles
Including the Roman empire era
Would have cooked in the Lumberjack era
. He wouldve been the best player in the world in the 60/70s
He’d probably have starved before reaching adulthood though, there’s a reason why we’re not all 7 footers.
And the current era is e-commerce; He’s actually about to whittle himself a shipment of BodyLevers.
Doing things like this for fun is likely why he’s considered unusually strong by his peers.
Genetics play a role too. His whole family is built like brick shithouses
And it’s funny since he did an interview where he said he doesn’t think he has freak level strength, he’s strong but it was that Jimmy interview that blew it way out of proportion
But then shit like this pops up and we’re all just like “no Jimmy was right” LOL
I guess this is a “there are levels to this” type thing. In an interview he said that his sister lifts more than him. I googled her. She’s a 2 time gold medal Olympian and 4 time world champion in shot put. I suspect when he thinks of freak level strength he’s thinking of other people in his family, lol.
I Googled her and the weirdest revelation was that this sister is Mormon lol
Yeah, this is a 7’ giant carrying a tree like I do with a couple grocery bags.
If I remember correctly, He mentioned that his sister is stronger than him.
2x gold medal olympian and 4x world champion in shot put, shes fuckin jacked
If Marvel ever debuts a hero from New Zealand, it would just be Valerie Adams.
Unknowingly met one of his brothers a few years ago and the guy was huge. Probably like 6”8/6”9. This was on a small pacific island that I don’t want to name to respect his privacy but he definitely stood out and was the tallest person I’ve ever seen on that island.
Mentioned this to my dad afterwards who very casually said “oh yeah his brother plays in the NBA, I don’t know his name but their last name is Adams”. Then it all made sense lol
It’s not A factor its THE factor 😂
[deleted]
7’ tall isn’t extremely unlikely, in the human race
What? Not sure how you define ‘extremely unlikely’, but there are only an estimated 3000 people IN THE WORLD who are over 7 feet. That is incredibly unlikely.
To put that in perspective, there are over 240,000 people who are struck by lightning every year.
In other words, you are 80 times more likely to be struck by lightning this year than someone is to be over 7 feet tall.
I mean…. Steven Adams isn’t even 7 feet tall. He is only 6’11”
It’s even more rare than you’re making it out to be. 3000 people at any given time. So over a lifetime, there were basically 3000 seven footers, not 3000 each year.
Let’s go super conservative and say a lifetime is 60 years. That means 50 people are born each year that’ll be 7 foot.
So you’re comparing 50 to 240k, or 3000 to 240k x 60 years. Much, much, much more rare than getting struck by lightning.
I think the thing that most people dont understand about undersized big men versus regular or over sized big men - the smaller guy often has more flexibility as a fulcrum point/leverage point for contact versus the big guy. He can muster the strength to challenge the big man for a moment of contact but then rug pull said contact and catch the big man off balance. Im 6’6” and back in my high school playing days - I was 190 at my absolute peak weight and most of the guys I would line up against were 225-245 at the heaviest.
Being undersized weight wise can be nice as far as cardio endurance and general bounce but in the course of a full game playing starters minutes - you’d get beat up pretty badly by the opposing big. I learned quickly as a lanky white kid that my mouth running had the best chance of undermining the guy I was guarding and I would try to bait fouls out of their starter as quickly as possible to get them subbed out and have me battling with the 2nd tier off the bench. Gods I miss those days. Play team sports until your legs fall off. Nothing better in the world in my opinion.
You could see that in the finals, wembanyama was being leveraged by point guards under the basket and he’d almost instantly lose his balance.
He’ll struggle with this his whole career. There’s no real way around it for him.
I think functional legs are better.
but the problem they had was that they found regular tall guys on the court would be exceptionally violent with them
Funny that Steven Adams himself says the exact same thing
One of those 7 footers has the be the strongest and it happens to be a brother of the Olympic throws champ
Took classes with two extremely tall guys: one 7’, the other 6’ 10”.
Your experience is way out there.
I’ve never even seen anyone I know for a fact is taller than me. Ever.
There was one guy on the train once, another dude twice at the supermarket and a third guy by the rec centre at uni but I never got close enough to any of them to tell. The train guy might be the supermarket dude (it’s by the train station).
I’m 207cm. I’ll let you figure out whether that’s 6’9” or 6’10”.
It’s funny because his strength blows the minds of other NBA players but nobody in NZ bats an eye at stuff like this is because this is basically just every rugby player
No it’s still incredible in NZ.
Steven Adams is a foot taller than the average rugby player. Anytime he does a feat of strength, it’s more impressive because he’s moving it through a whole extra ft of range of motion.
It’s why rugby players and weight lifters tend to be compact and shorter, because that body type is easier to generate leverage with. You have to be absurdly strong to be that long and still move heavy weight.
Arent most of big lift numbers by people over 6ft? I’d think if this were true all the big lift records would be by people under 5’8
I think the bigger you are, the more capacity you have to lift heavy (to a certain extent), but the smaller/lower center of gravity you are, the shorter your levers etc, the easier it is for you to become stronger. Does that make sense?
You also have shorter reps.
Kinda of it’s super nuanced. Because proportions matter more. Spine length, femur length, tibia length, and your mobility matter a lot.
Greatest heavyweight Olympic lifter Lasha is 6’6” and he’s got a beautiful deep squat and a ton of mobility. Long legs and arms (not necessarily great for lifting but he has good proportions so it doesn’t hinder him to much).
For instance if you have long femurs, short tibias and shorter spine. Squats are gonna be hard and your not going to have a great high bar back squat. Won’t matter if you 5’0 or 7’0. Those proportions suck for that type of lift. Although they can be great for deadlifting, especially if you have long arms.
This is just a general rule of thumb. There are exceptions to the rule, absolutely freaks and units. But usually the people that are super successful, fall into these proportions on top of all the quick twitch muscle fibers, etc.
Short torso, long legs with a balance proportion of femur to tibia makes up your typical sprinter. Someone who breaks that mold is that Chinese sprinter who set the world record 60m time. But his short leg length and is both and advantage and disadvantage. He can generate a ton of explosiveness out of the blocks, so he’s got fantastic starts and is ridiculous over 40 meters. But in a 100 meter race it hurts him over the rest of 60 meters, because he lacks the stride to maintain his top end as someone with more ideal proportions. There’s a documentary on that guy and I think it was a coach from the US the helped him develop his strengths to help negate his limitations. If you can’t finish strong, work on starting ridiculously fast. If you get out ahead far enough and quickly enough, you’ll be able to barely hang on in the second half of the race.
Basically don’t get disheartened in what your personal make up is. There’s pros and cons, you just gotta figure out where you are on that scale.
Lol that’s my exact build. 6’3 all femur. Can confirm I cannot squat for shit, even when I was regularly in the gym. I run half marathons for fun though
There is a Goldie locks zone of enough size to pack on muscle but not too big that your range of motion and fulcrum isn’t a major additional burden.
That goldie locks zone is right around 6’9 450lbs. His name is Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson lol
Leg based lifts yeah, you tend to see smaller guys do better on the push presses
It’s probably weight classes that favor shorter guys. For a given max weight, stocky lifters have an advantage over lanky ones. Take that away and the huge guys set records.
I’m a kiwi and I disagree. There are lots of Pacifica people in NZ and these guys are just incredibly strong (especially the Tongans). I’ve seen 5’”10 guys carry 3 large sheets of plasterboard like it s nothing, even though the things are super awkward.
That could be more of an experience thing + strength. For instance if those people raised some random person from another race etc in that line of work, its hard to imagine theyd be automatically weaker.
For example were I live there is roofing company of Native Americans that for years everyone said were ridiculously strong with how many squares they could carry. First white boy that worked with them from a young age was doing the same within a few months.
Its more perception in many cases and a “culture” of certain habits that creates the illusion of some natural gift.
I did that on Matariki weekend.
If this was normal for the average rugby player they’d all be playing in the NBA making millions more than what they make playing rugby.
This may shock you but there are other basketball skills than “brute strength” and it alone isn’t enough to become successful in the NBA
Yea when you do stuff like this on your day off you get to be like that.
Jeez that dude is strong
I think it was chet who said adams isn’t strong in a flashy way, but when you try to move him he simply doesn’t move. Excellent description
I don’t doubt it, but Chet couldn’t move my grandma out of his way
Yeah, I feel like chet would blow away in the breeze like a patio umbrella if he’s not properly secured.
Moving people has not ever been a strength of Chet’s. Seems like this would be true of 85% of other bigs Chet faces. Love me an old-school big boxing out and throwing it to a 7’ forward for a break.
I feel like Chet couldn’t move the average redditor.
Tbf bad matchup the difference in weight between the average redditor and Chet is like 250 lbs
lol Chet
Agreed but Butler’s perspective on Adams is an absolute banger lmao
Steven says this himself. He’s probably not going to be the strongest guy in the gym but if a plane carrying all the NBA big men crashes on an island he’ll be doing all the hard shit no one else can do lol
”…That motherfucker is strong. Pshhh, I don’t know. He’s strong… Dude I’m trying to tell you…”
And his sister is probably even stronger
I know who his sister is, she won golds in multiple Olympics for shot put and is insanely strong….for a woman, but there is no way in hell she is lifting that massive log….
How much do you think that log weighs?
Apparently Valarie Adams has a max squat of 240kg (529lbs) and max bench of 160kb (353lbs).
“For a woman” lol no dude she’s just strong
He says here she warms up with his max bench
Yeah maybe pound for pound strength would be a good comparison but not just straight up strength.
This is what he looks like walking to the bathroom in the morning
Honestly, I think it’s a pretty light log. His feet aren’t sinking much in the sand and the sand doesn’t displace much from the impact. The sand looks above the tide line so it should be dry, and the log isn’t wet either. A lot of the weight of a log can rot out over time, and dried up it could be pretty light.
The thing about bigs being ‘strong’ is that it’s often judged by trying to physically move them without being able to gain advantageous leverage. If you try push a 7 foot 2 guy he’s always going to be able to make his weight work against you because he’s leaning his weight down on your centre of gravity so you basically have to live him to move him, and you can’t do the same because it’s a foul. If you could actually sink the hooks you might find them pretty unstable and weak by the same metric. Same for them moving you. They can always apply force significantly above your centre of gravity in a way a normal person can’t, but it’s not strength any more than getting a longer crowbar is.
With that said Adams is brother to a shot put champ, he’s probably strong as fuck. But probably also less strong than the impression players have of him from a pure numbers perspective.
How I feel carrying a case of water after grocery shopping
I’m way more wobbly carrying the water than he is with that log
Tbf water slosh’s around. If that log is completely dry it’s way lighter than people think
Mate that’s a tree not a log lol
What do you think a log is? lol
Is a log cabin a treehouse?
interesting.
yes
Is a hot dog a sandwich
Yes
A part of a tree!
To answer David Goggins, Steven Adams. Steven Adams is gonna carry the logs
context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpZdAIWilww
For some reason I was thinking Walton Goggins and I was very confused
same, but it fit so well in a Boyd Crowder voice i didn’t even notice
man why do they lift so damn close to failure… ive seen too many fucked up clips of when this goes wrong
The real Aquaman
I read a article that the God of War Kratos actor tore some muscle trying to carry a log or something and they have to recast him. They should cast Steven Adams to replace him lol
Boi. Chur.
We called him Aquamane when he was a Grizz.
“That’s not a bonfire; this is a bonfire”
When I was a teen my buddy and I were told we could have a beer if we got firewood for the adults. We chopped down an old electrical pole and brought it back and were given free reign of the cooler since there was a bonfire all night
How many of those adults died of random cancer? Because that pike was likely soaked in chemicals to prevent decay
Edit: pole not pike, but how often does autocorrect give a roughly accurate change?
Seriously folks, do NOT burn wooden utility poles or railroad ties unless you want to breath in some of the most toxic shit ever.
Hey Stephen can you go find some wood? Comes back with a 15’ log.
Fiya*
He’s gotta be one of the coolest nba players of all time
reminds me of Ben Wallace, Big Ben used to curl tree logs
i figured thats how he got big biceps so i started curling trees in the backyard as a kid
still dont look like Ben but i did get jacked
I tried curling telephone poles in the army, cant say I’d recommend it
I mean i did curl wood logs, i was pretty jacked, i just didnt look like Ben Wallace
He is no Detlef Schrempf, but he is pretty cool.
Steven Adams is definitely in the short list of NBA players I’d want to hang out with. Donovan Mitchell is another, dude seems incredibly genuine and thoughtful.
I’m a Warriors fan (shocker, I know), so I have no ties to Adams and he might be my favorite non-Warrior of all time.
That’s beach wood. They are incredibly light.
Yeah he’s definitely an insanely strong guy, but driftwood is way lighter than more recently fallen trees. A lot of the weight of lumber is from water, so when it dries out it’s considerably lighter
Oh phew, my driftwood boys!
Thought I’d never find you
Exactly what I was thinking.
Not that Steven Adamns isn’t strong as hell, but I bet that log isn’t anywhere near as heavy as it looks.
Lmao, thank you. Half the people here commenting can do this.
Literally, we built fires with logs like that all the time when I was a kid.
lol thought I was going mental for a second. The hardest part of lifting that would be balancing it.
Someone who’s been to the beach! finally!
You don’t know how heavy that log is, it looks like he is struggling with it and it hits the sand with a lot of weight.
It’s possible that size is pretty heavy still yes. But my main point is it’s no where near the weight of a forest log. Which would be insane if that’s what he was carrying.
I carried a driftwood log about half that size just recently and I’m far from a strongman. But yeah, all depends on how waterlogged it is.
Thank you! I’ve carried driftwood logs like this as well and I’m weak AF.
I want him to carry me like that
do you have the core strength to remain that taut position?
Absolutely naut
Whaut are you trying to say?
It takes a laut of training
r/NBA don’t let me down
u/funkchi_dev just threw up the alley-oop
In the odyssey, when they end up on that island with the cannibal giants… maybe they just ended up Steven Adams’ way
They said “f we went to far south” ended up in NZ
I thought this was from the Moana live action
I’d rather watch 100 minutes of Steven Adams moving heavy stuff around
Why not the Rock with CGI hair?
rockets GM out here sweating and praying for man’s back.
Running in to some ancient batttle and this motherfucker comes over the hill to end your bloodline.
Dark souls boss
some of y’all have never done manual labor and it shows
Yeah, I’ve seen 60 year old day laborers do that on 2 hours of sleep and a monster. I’m not saying it’s easy it’s just… the kind of thing a lot of people do for work all day long
People never been to the beach either apparently. Don’t realize how much lighter beach wood is.
Bro looking like Sanosuke Sagara from Rurouni Kenshin
It’s a faked stunt, with a dried out beach driftwood log that weighs about 40 pounds. You are all so gullible.
/s actually he’s just insanely strong
Why did you put the /s? He’s not doing it as a stunt, but it literally is just driftwood. Most men in decent shape/strength could carry that as well. Driftwood is WAY lighter than it looks.
He is in my top 3 of current athletes I would love to sit down and have a drink with
Not going to out his vacation but I saw some tall dude with a beard doing stretches for while I was chilling on the beach the other day in the morning.
Finally recognized it was Adams. Didn’t want to bother him on vacation too much.
Just told him to have a great season and he said “Thanks bro.” Probably would have entertained me more if I pushed a conversation but again already felt like I was being “That guy” by saying anything in the first place haha.
He’s a class act all the way around.
Pfft, big deal. I could do that, if the tree trunk was like… a lot smaller and lighter
Evoking Sandor Clegane from Game of Thrones.
Shades of the Hound in Game of Thrones in the episode it’s revealed he’s actually alive 😂
Doing tihs barefoot through the seashells too
I don’t mean to downplay this but logs like driftwood weigh much less than freshly cut oak. He’s a monster but I think our perspective is skewed here.
Legend.
https://tenor.com/view/commando-arnold-schwarzenegger-gif-10968090
Aquaman casually used 0,0000000000001% of his power, nothing special to see here.
Pfff, I could do that, I just choose not to
Boy! You are not ready
Steven Adams and massive logs, name a better combo.
Lotta you have never carried a dried out log 😆. He isn’t doing this to convince people he is strong, there is plenty of examples of that. This isn’t one of them.
I mean, that thing probably weighs under 100lbs. He could do it if it weighed more, but sea wood is dispersed so effectively because it isnt very dense and floats.
Jean Valjean ass training
That is dry like my dick
Barefoot too. My soft footsies could never take that punishment.
He is on the sand. But tbf people in nz go to the shops barefooted often enough
I see sharp shells. Ha
NZ kids grow up barefoot mate
What can he say except you’re welcome
Rockets vs Spurs game 5 2027
Patterson-Gimlin film, colorized 2026
Very performative, but I approve
He could have stood in for the Rock in the Moana movie
Live footage of Aquaman carrying Wemby on his shoulders.
Very disappointed nobody posted a gif of the hound from GOT carrying the tree/log
Human golden retriever
“I got a stick for the bonfire”
To be fair driftwood can be really light for the size
Bro’s like: look at this log bro
Most impressive part is that he’s barefoot on that sand covered in shells and rocks!
His sister could probably carry the log on one sholder and him on the other.
They do need to recast Kratos …
That’s not a log, mate.
I don’t think my feet would even survive stepping on those rocks in the sand
Looks like he’s carrying Wemby
Meanwhile us Aussie’s are stuck with Ben Simmonds :(
He comes from a large family - in both senses of the word. He’s the youngest of 18 siblings, so there’s that… But then the guys average 2.06m in height, and the women average 1.83m. See what I mean?
Lumber Jack maxxing
not sure how helpful thats gonna be for a bonfire but good job Mr Adams!
Sometimes I think Steven Adams is a myth like Paul Bunyan not a real basketball player.
The part that’s especially crazy is that HE HAD TO PICK IT UP
The Hound
No one talking about how the wood is dry and probably weighs about 150 lb.
Most grown men could carry that.
Big doesn’t equate to heavy.
At first I was like “Mehh that’s a hollow log” then I saw how the log fell and “that’s some heavy shit!”
I misread the title as Adam Silver at first
He was one of those armored demons in the Odyssey, no CGI needed
