Mavs definitely shouldn’t “want” to move Kyrie, especially since there’s no reason to tank, but if I can get high value draft capital for the future when Flagg and Morez are hitting their prime and Flagg gets his super max, I think that’s the play.

Say a Jimmys expiring, podz, and a warriors 2032 first for Kyrie and PJ or Klay something like that.

Take a step back now to have more draft talent and a young player.

Flagg struggled mightily when forced to be the main ball handler at half court. Mavs need a stable PG for the sake of development of Flagg and Morez alone.

De Larrea hopefully will be that guy but easing him in under Kyrie also helps his own development. Kyrie is a veteran that is needed for the rebuild.

If a team offers 3 unprotected firsts? Things change. However the Cavs will not do that. I doubt they would even involve Allen.

Exactly. Harden would hardly be signed long term, it would be recreating the same issue we escaped with AD. His rumored contract (²⁄₈₁, if I read correctly) could be doable, it is not that much higher than we expected with Kyrie and gives a quick out for the handover to de Larrea…but Schroeder makes it moot. Probably negative. For the Cavs it would be a downgrade and they would need Lebron to hard commit and for the Mavs it’s not an automatic yes. Is Harden a better passer than Kyrie? Yes. This helps. It would be a lateral move to do Klutch a solid.

If Harden is on the table, becomes a discussion. If he is not? Lebron can moan as much as he likes.

I doubt his value is that high since he didnt play at all last season and if he doesn’t pick up his PO (I’d put this at being ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ personally) he’s an expiring after next season.

It makes a lot of sense for the Mavs to have a skilled veteran ball handler around Flagg to help his development and make his life easier.

You do a three team trade and get back Fox who is closer to flaggs timeline. That helps yall have a mentor for Flagg and gives kyrie a chance to actually compete. Fox rehabs his value with lots of usage and shots and then yall can flip him later for more picks. You keep Kyrie and maybe he’s washed soon and you get nothing.

Gafford trade isn’t about timeline. We have way too many bigs and he’s got a decent contract to trade and teams have already been interested. Kyrie isn’t rehabbing anymore he’s been healthy for months, he tore the ACL like 1.5 years ago. Kyrie does stuff that most of the league can’t do, and he’s also one of our few guards. He’s essential to the team unless we are getting his replacement. We also can’t tank anymore, may as well compete.

Don’t think it’s that perplexing.

They resigned Moussa Cisse who is a solid rim protector and lob target/ rim finisher. Lively is also in the mix. Cooper bolsters front court flexibility and Gafford while capable offers somewhat redundant skills.

A capable veteran point guard like Kyrie, while a gamble for health, is likely to make more of an impact on their competitiveness and help the development of Cooper and the other young guys.

It makes sense to hold onto for now given his value can’t be great as he’s in his mid 30s coming off an ACL tear. If he looks good after he comes back and some team offers you a good package midseason then you have to pull the trigger though. It doesn’t make sense to hold onto him long term if someone is offering you good value when his timeline doesn’t matchup with the center piece of your team in Flagg’s.
