Yea, he’s our best defender on guys like Maxey, Brunson, and Mitchell. A lot of teams struggle with these guys, but Walsh does a fantastic job. We had a +22 NetRtg with him on the floor in the series we lost to the 76ers

Under the radar, Walsh also shot 38% from 3 as well as having a 62% TS%. Obviously low volume and he isn’t creating his own shot, but he played in 68 games and started 25. So it’s not like his shooting can be completely ignored either

I don’t know why people bash Joe’s Game 7 lineup - I absolutely loved what he did to try to shake things up and inject offense. Scheierman, Garza, and Harper all had hot hands at various times during the season - any one of the 3 starts off hot and it’s a totally different game from the rest of the series. It didn’t work, but hindsight is ²⁰⁄₂₀. At least he tried something.

Walsh is an excellent defender but offensively he’s pretty limited to open 3’s and hustle buckets. Not a guy who can be a microwave and help carry a team for a night.

I’m not sure what his ceiling is, but I do think this is one we’ll be looking at in a couple years as one of the better contracts in the league for a non-star. Especially if the 3 ball improvement is real.

I think his ceiling is just a more consistent version of what you saw this past season.

Which is a fucking bargain for $5M. But don’t go expecting some kind of leap to a well-rounded starter. His offensive game is far too limited and his energy/hustle makes his game better in small bursts than it would for 30+ minutes every night.

And I believe the 3-ball is “real”, but keep in mind he’s only shooting open looks. He’s not suddenly turning into a high volume Sam Hauser type from deep.

If he can be this is one of the best contracts in basketball if not he’s a good rotation player in the regular season who can see spot minutes in the playoffs for his energy and defense.

Net rating in an 89 minute playoff sample is pretty much worthless, especially given that he had a negative on/off in a much larger sample in the regular season.

This is a good value because he seems like a very good wing defender.

The question is whether he can get enough playing time to matter given that he’s a near-zero offensively. Even if the shooting this year is real (and there’s plenty of reason to think it’s not given the rest of his pro and college career), it’s on such low volume that it doesn’t really matter. He’s not attracting any defensive attention off ball, and he has no on ball skills.

I didn’t call him a negative player, but a having a +0.5 EPM in a single 18 MPG-season doesn’t make him a positive player. His expected EPM (his projection going forward, considering multiple years) is -0.3.

I think he’s an equally disruptive defender. He reminds me of Nesmith with a higher defensive IQ when he’s off the ball. I think a lot of people would agree he looked good in the Sixers series vs Maxey.

He was also at 38% 3p% on low volume last year and that’s intriguing as well.

We can disagree on if it’s a “steal” or not but it’s not a huge risk and there is obvious opportunity for payoff if his shooting continues to develop (22%, 27%, 38% on similar volume 3pt over last 3 years).

edit: I didn’t mean that Walsh had a higher ceiling than Thybulle when they were at the same age. I just meant that Thybulle has developed and shown his ceiling. Walsh still has the opportunity to improve.

Well taxpayer MLE is currently $6M and will only increase over the next 4 years.

So the comp to this 3/$15M extension at taxpayer MLE rates through 29-30 would be something more like 3/$21M. But you couldn’t even do that, so you’d be buying into him twice in free agency.

This also totally ignores any possible growth from a young player.

If he improves even slightly this is a major steal. Same player, then it’s more market rate.

At a certain point seeing Role Player guys scale up is a good measuring stick, but with so few games and them playing with completely new rosters with new roles its really hard to make real assumptions on NBA ability.

Legitimately by drafting well later in the draft. Most teams aren’t going to get steals in free agency because you are bidding against 28 other teams.

Not a shot at the Lakers though, Reaves just super overperformed expectations and made it to a point where he was getting super paid elsewhere if the Lakers didnt pay him. Walsh isnt at that level and doesnt have that security so he takes guaranteed 15 million as a second round pick. Pritchard did the same thing a couple years back.

Scam deal? Walsh is still a guy who only averaged 5 and 4 last year. It’s a risk for us too, so many guys wash out of the league, and there’s no guarantee his shooting improvement will stick.

It’s a deal that makes sense for everyone. Walsh gets enough wealth to set him for life if he’s smart with it and hits free agency at 26, so he’ll still get a big deal later if he improves. Celtics get a reasonable cost controlled deal for a guy they’ve invested in who shows some upside.

Lakers are always either drafting/developing poorly, or they’re trading youth away for veterans. So they’re never dealing with organic homegrown guys. Like, who was the last Lakers draft pick to even spend their first 5+ years in a Lakers uniform? (I’m genuinely trying to figure this out and having to go WAY back… to Andrew Bynum in 2005!)

If a guy like Knecht didn’t totally suck too much to justify another contract, the Lakers could extend him cheaply next offseason too just like the Celtics did with Walsh.
