Brunson was averaging 16-5 with Dallas. If anything, the Knicks overpaid quite a bit for his production. Even if you look at his playoff production, he was still only a 21-5 guy. Going into his first year as a Knick, he was considered to be a top 50-60 guy, and was paid accordingly.
Lots of players get these “prove it” contracts but do not in fact prove it. For example, Jalen Green, he got paid based off of potential and has not shown any improvement since.
He signed an extension, they are not talking about the free agent contract.
