Similar to Dallas in 2023. The Thunder in 2023 is another great example, instead of making the play in push they would have lost 1 more game and had the best odds at a #1 pick to complete their core. Imagine the Thunder in 2023 had the best odds at Wemby.

So we would have seen OKC or Dallas get Wemby, Wemby luka or Wemby Shai it would have been unstoppable. It’s a good thing no prospects look like game changers fit the next 3+ years.

I would say we are likely significantly better than last if you look at the non-Giannis games, which was more than half the season (47).

The players we’ve added are Herro, Jaime, Ware, Kas, Levert, Markovic (interesting prospect), Burries (promising rookie), and Ament (project rookie).

The players who were on the roster last year other than Giannis: Bobby (solid stretch big but a defensive issue), Cole Anthony (no longer an NBA talent), Amir Coffey (no longer an NBA talent), Ajax (never an NBA talent player), Gary Harris (not longer an NBA talent), Taurean Prince (played like seven games due to neck surgery), Cam Thomas (thinks he’s a superstar).

Our team was praying a bunch of washed up players would be lifted up by Giannis, but he almost never played and we had maybe the least talented team in the league without him. Even with him we had an under .500 record.

This new team has no superstar, but a whole host of solid role players and interesting prospects. We should be better than last year, and compete for the play in

Edit: and I obviously forgot the coaching. Switching from what everyone on here agreed was the worst coach in the league to at least a decent coach should improve the play a lot. We might actually run an offense and defense that isn’t 20 years old.

The “tanking is dead” crowd cracks me up. Buddy, if you hit on a superstar in the draft you are essentially guaranteed 11+ years of control or a kings-ransom-trade-haul if they ask for a trade after their extension. With that kind of reward, folks will always be tanking.

OP, you seem to forget that the league changed more than how the odds are handled when it comes to tanking.

If a team gets caught doing it, heavy penalties will be imposed on them including the potential loss of picks. No one should tank for any reason now.

Yes I also think the Bucks (and Pelicans) should tank. Brought to you by a fan of the team that definitely does not own the worst of those two first round picks (as long as it’s not 1-4).

The benefit is remarkably small. It might be negative actually, because they have their own 2nd round pick and that will be highest of their FRP would have been the worst of the lottery picks.

Considering that development of their players will probably be best if they are competitive, there really isn’t any benefit of tanking.

They don’t even own their pick outright. Them being in the relegation zone don’t matter. Pelicans can swap with them. And if both picks are top 4, the Pelicans get both.

The Lakers are projected to win 46 games by the bookies.

I think the Walter group is on to something, with their analytics driven signings, but if anything goes wrong (mostly health), they should definitely tank to tenth or at least the play in. (I think 36 games usually gets you tenth worst.)

With the new lotto rules I believe they have about 30% chance of keeping their Utah pick

There’s zero reason to do that. Just stockpiling random picks that you don’t even know where they will land or even if they will convey is a waste of time. You might as well sell the roster players for cash and buy lottery tickets because the odds are better. Any team that starts stockpiling is also going to have other GM’s just fully protecting their picks from the lottery. No team is going to create another OKC and there is no GM smart enough to recreate what Presti did.

The anti-tanking rules are so convoluted and they don’t work.

The way it should work is simple.

The moment you become mathematically eliminated from the playoffs you become eligible to gain draft points. The way you earn points is by winning games.

So teams that lose earlier in the season have more chances to earn points. If they want the number one pick they have to keep winning games.

no lottery. no chances for fixes and cheating. The team with the most points gets the number one pick.

I guess that might cause some early season taking or mid-season tanking.

Maybe you could do something where you start with negative points for your overall NBA standing at the All-Star break.

there you go no more lottery and teams are incentivized to try winning for the entire season
