If inducted, Perez would have the lowest career bWAR of any position player from the live-ball era in the hall. He’s is 3 WAR short of Harold Baines.

He needed one more good season and I think he could’ve gotten in or survived for awhile on the ballot

Reason why I think he will ultimately get in is because the pool of HOF catchers will be pretty dry 

Salvy’s like the ultimate “tell me you don’t watch baseball without telling me” case for HOF voters who just look at WAR, his trophy case is stacked but then you see that OBP and it just laughs at you.

Lance Parrish is pretty similar and is also a catcher.

All-star games are voted on by kids in May. Every team is given a representative. It’s not a good argument. Derek Jeter won a gold glove during a season when he had negative defensive WAR. Rafael Palmiero won one when he played like 15 games at 1B. Gold gloves in and of themselves are not always a good argument.

Catchers, and especially modern catchers just don’t get big counting stats. Pitchers throwing harder and batters swinging harder means catchers are getting hit harder than ever before. To each their own, but for me I’d say the awards are recognition that he’s one of the absolute best catchers of his generation, and that should be good enough to get him into Cooperstown.

Mauer (I think rightly) made it in on the first ballot and he ended up with 143 career home runs playing the last 5 years of his career at 1st base. Mauer’s overall numbers both in terms of OPS and WAR are better than what Salvy has done, but if Mauer made it on the first ballot Salvy should make it eventually. It’s unlikely we’ll ever see a catcher put up good OBP and good power and play enough games to put up counting stats. The position is just too hard.

Put him in the Hall of Above Average…and retire his jersey (Royals) but those stats are not HoF territory in my opinion.

Munson should go in before Perez

He actually has pretty spectacular counting stats. The list of catchers with 300 HRs and 2000 hits is Bench, Pudge, Piazza, Berra, Fisk, Carter. If Salvy gets to 2000 hits he’s in elite counting stat territory

Somehow Jorge Posada is not a hall of famer and he is way more deserving.

He just screams “off the ballot within three years, then a unanimous Vets committee pick a few years later”

I’ve always felt like we needed one big late-career October where he was a stud like in 2015. HoF voting for catchers often includes intangibles and storytelling and that would be a big one for him.

Alas, it isn’t going to happen.

Either way, he’ll get a statue in the new stadium and forever be a franchise icon.

If he ultimately gets in it’ll be a gradual crawl over a few years with a lot of PR work to move it along.

He benefitted a LOT from the AL being so weak at catcher where the NL had Posey/Molina/Realmuto and a number of other solid guys either defensively or offensively (Bailey, Grandal, Contreras Bros, Smith)

Look at Sal Perez baseball savant page. He was 2nd percentile in chase percentage his first year and first percentile every year since! Its amazing that he has hit well enough to even be a major league player with his hitting process, horrific speed and defense.

Show what use d to be valued vs what now is. Also, of you are cool you get to win awards. Jeter got awards not because he was a good hitter, but because he was cool as fuck to everyone.

Salvador perez has the bat of a glove-first catcher and the glove of a bat-first catcher.

He stacked up awards because the first few years of his career were before advanced stats really became widespread and then he just coasted on name recognition to collect a bunch of the later ones.

I usually value vibes a lot for HOF induction, but salvy would be the worst position player ever inducted to the HOF by fWAR. He plays in an era where we have that stat and that information so it’s not a cade of judging him by stats that came out decades after he retired like most of the rest of the bad inductees. He shouldnt come close

He is a “how he made you feel” hall of fame nod for me, yeah the stats are technically there but he has been a Titan of the game for so long and has meant so much for one city he needs to go in the hall

He’a the poster child for being a name in an era where there truly weren’t any other good catchers in the AL for the vast duration of his prime. Nobody great defensively hit enough to warrant 70% play time behind the plate to get those undeserved Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers.

2016-now has probably been the absolute weakest era for catchers in AL history, and he happened to have great name recognition due to the Royals being off of back to back World Series appearances, with a WS MVP to boot. In 50 years, he’ll be a guy who’s BbRef page newer fans will come along and wonder why he got all that hardware.

OBP is not the end all be all.

OBP was underrated for 100 years, but I think our Moneyball generation has overcompensated.

A walk can be used as a defensive strategy. 

Prior to the DH, 8th hitters in the NL would routinely have better OBPs than they should because they would be pitched around to get to the pitcher’s spot.
