[Highlight] Ben Rice ties the game with a 3-run blast!
Fun fact, I built those lanes at that bowling alley.
I watched this happen live in TV. I was like, “why did he say that”
We had to go replace the machines sometime last year, and it felt like taking history apart. Still had the orginal endorsements on some of lanes. Pepsi, ESPN, was pretty groovy to see it intact all those years later.
102.1 MPH EV
29° LA
394 FT
.660 xBA
30⁄30 HR/Park
How can it be a 30⁄30 park homer but only have expected batting average of .660? Why not 1.000?
I’d guess the xBA is just launch angle and exit velo. 44% of the time that’s probably a fly out to CF warning track
You are correct on the logic, but that’d be 34% of the time
I feel like they need to have like an “exit direction” or something to account for this
xBA doesn’t factor in direction. So you can have pole hugger HRs that are like 30⁄30 shots only have an xBA of like .200 because anywhere else in the outfield it’s basically always a flyout
Would have been an out if that same EV/LA was hit to CF in most parks
Unrelated but I think the Yankees are the only team this season that hasn’t hit a grand slam
i could be wrong but I don’t think the phillies have either

With bases loaded
Would not have expected all >.500 teams
107 PAs while Yanks trail them with 69??
How have they not hit a grand salami at this point?
brewers have not as well
Five teams haven’t hit a grand slam this year, according to Baseball Reference:
Yankees, Rays, Rangers, Phillies, Brewers
The offense has Arrozen

Call a pitch clock violation on that you bitch ass umps!
You did get gifted a walk two batters before on a really bad missed call.
Which could’ve been challenged and they didn’t. This comment doesn’t work in the age of ABS.
I was thinking he should walk Rice and try to get out Jones instead.
Literally
Then you get Belli with the bases loaded.
Hasn’t homered in a month
Bellinger isn’t Ben Rice
It makes me fucking sick watching Henry Davis just give opposing teams baserunners because he is the worst challenger in the sport
Why is Mlodzinski still in the game though, not that I’m complaining.
For some reason our entire philosophy with him is that he can only be used in bulk. Not sure if it’s a Cherington or Kelly call but it actively kills an already bad bullpen
Top of the order three straight lefties up with 2 men and no outs and he doesn’t put in a lefty reliever?
Maybe I’m too BooneVision but I thought Kelly would’ve put in A lefty
Kelly is a terrible bullpen manager. Our pen is full of garbage don’t get me wrong, but he loves to leave guys in too long
Don’t forget O’Hearn challenging an obvious strike in a useless situation and then getting cold feet on one that would have put him on base for the first home run
The Pirates are objectively the worst challengers in the league, and it’s probably cost them at least a win’s worth of value, if not more (not to mention situations like this where it might end up actually losing the game)
This is on your manager you could’ve had a lefty pitch to Ben Rice whose splits as a lefty are worse against lefties. Don Kelly didn’t put the Pirates in a position to succeed and Ben Rice chose violence
Walking Wells when ball 3 was fully in the zone was crazy. But the dude is hitting .160 all you gotta do is throw strikes down and in
He truly is ass
Pittsburgh had an automatic strikeout on deck in Spencer Jones and decides to pitch to Ben Rice
Thank you Don Kelly
Leaving a righty in with Ben Rice as the tying run is certainly a choice but I won’t complain
His .862 OPS against lefties makes him a tough matchup regardless of the pitcher. I’d probably still stick with Mlodzinski too since he’s probably been their most effective bullpen arm all year
Felt inevitable
As soon as he went 3-0 I didn’t even need to watch I just knew it was coming
crushed
That was certainly one of the pitches of all time. 3-1 fastball right down the middle to a dead red power hitter when a HR is the only thing that can hurt you. Just a bizarre choice
I don’t know where we would be without Ben Rice. What an incredible leap he has taken this year.
He was awesome last year but had a huge stroke of bad luck
Man he obliterated that ball.
That’s what you would call “well struck.”
Austin Wells strikes out looking but the ump blows the call and Henry Davis doesn’t challenge, which ends up in this. Embarassing.
Thank you Donnie Kelly baby!!
And a big thank you to Aaron Boone!
my kingdom for a pair of relievers
You’re telling me a Ben Riced this homer?
Yeah you can’t pitch that vs him…
Holy shit!
And they just fucking wasted it.
That would be strike three against Wells was really bad. Ump should focus on making the correct calls instead of whatever else is going on in his head
He rakes
He’s genuinely so handsome
Red Sox need to call up Kyle Beans quick if they want any shot of winning the AL East
My Man.
Fantasy baseball is the only thing bringing me joy this season.
And there is the Pirates bullpen moment that we waited for
Rice is awesome. Sucks though that he and Goldy are the only hitters on the entire team exceeding their offensive expectations, while everyone else are having either a down or career-worst season.
James Rowson should get Rice a nice gift for being the only reason he still has a job. Bellinger is probably the third best hitter and his OPS is .631 since June 1st.
