Winning 14+ is insane, especially in the era of limited reliever usage. Must be fun as hell to be a Sox fan right now, I hope they can turn this into a solid playoff run because stories like this are always awesome.
I’ll be honest, right now it still feels to me like we’re playing with house money. After that dreadful start to the year, even just being over .500 is nice. It’d be great to make the playoffs, it’d be even better to make some noise there, but I don’t feel like I could be mad even if the Sox actually end up finishing in last place. Everything goes wrong for the whole rest of the season? Enh, it’s a shame but we’ll still have that amazing winning streak to remember.
Of course, I say that now, when “being over .500” is still a very recent development. If the team stays scorching hot through August and then has a massive September tailspin that takes them out of contention I’ll probably lose my shit.

Now that 8,000 teams make the playoffs, playing .500 the rest of the way might very well get them into the playoffs. That’s what one giant winning stretch over a couple of weeks can do in modern baseball.
