Glen Powell To Play Lou Gehrig In New Richard Linklater Movie
Is Glen Powell the person I would have cast in this role? I don’t know, I’ve never made a movie.
Does it mean that my wife is more likely to go see it with me? Yes.
Glen was in the Dazed and Confused sequel 10 or so years ago that Richard Linklater (obviously) directed, so they have some familiarity with each other.
Also in Hit Man too

It’s a spiritual successor to Dazed and Confused, not really a sequel. Great movie though.
It’s not exactly a sequel. None of the same characters. But it’s the same type of hangout movie except college baseball instead of high school football. And set in 1980 rather than the 70’s.
I like both, but I think it’s better than Dazed and Confused.

I like it more than Dazed but it admittedly isn’t as quotable and doesn’t have anywhere near the mainstream success.

Linklater is the best. If you haven’t seen Everybody Wants Some!!, do yourself a favor and give it a watch
If he gives Lou Gerhig’s story the same treatment he gave Lorenz Hart’s in Blue Moon, it’ll be a real treat. Gerhig will also probably appeal to more people than a WW2-era Broadway biopic.

Believe it or not, Gary Cooper was bigger than Gehrig. The difference is that Gehrig was built like a safe.

Linklater’s films fall anywhere between fine to amazing in my experience, so I’m excited despite not being the biggest Powell guy. We so rarely get good baseball movies anymore

I love the movie Pride of the Yankees and love Gary Cooper, but this time I hope they make sure the actor playing Gehrig actually looks like he knows how to play baseball.

It’s Linklater dude, there almost certainly will be actual baseball played in the movie. Check out his last baseball movie, dudes actually play and play well. One of the pitchers in the movie is actually a former college player who’s the brother of Huston Street, a big league pitcher.

I agree that he’s maybe a bit milquetoast for the push he has been getting, but he was at least serviceable in Twisters and The Running Man.

I guess you and I have different definitions of awesome. I cringed through 3⁄4 of the movie before I finally let myself turn it off.
They were going to cast Glenn Howerton but he kept yelling “SICKNESS BE GONE” during the ALS scenes
Pessimistically I don’t think people today find Gehrig to be as special as we used to. Hard work and humility aren’t exactly selling at an all time high right now, lol.
(Gehrig is my all time favorite player of any sport, I think he was an absolute top-shelf example of humanity)
Project Hail Mary, a movie centered around the concepts of humility and empathy, is the biggest movie of the year. People don’t yearn for misery as much as we believe.
One of my favorite books, so glad Gosling did Grace justice. He was perfect for it.

Could be interesting depending on the approach they take. A classic hagiography might not land with today’s audiences, but a true-to-life portrayal of his physical decline might resonate.
Glen Powell and Richard Linklater’s second baseball movie together. Definitely excited for it. Got to help out a bit with the first one and wish them both the best.

Only time I ever “loved” Powell was a linklater movie, and I don’t know if you guys knew this but Lou Gehrig actually played for the Yankees which happens to be a team I like.

This is either going to be an okay movie or really bad. Glen Powell is fine but a lot of the movies since Twisters have been a bit of a mess.
Linklater has made more masterpieces than okay movies, and he’s arguably never made a really bad one.
Every 2nd or 3rd project is really good. I haven’t been blown away by Powell.
He’s also already made a very good baseball movie starring Powell.

The only one that is probably really bad imo is actually a baseball movie: his Bad News Bears.
I think it’s really bad but I don’t know if I begrudge it being such a facile, toothless remake however, and perhaps it’s not that bad if graded purely on its own. Not eager to rewatch to find out.
