Speaking of the Hawks, unrestricted free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga remains a candidate to return to Atlanta on a potential one-plus-one deal, league sources told HoopsHype.

With Atlanta currently $4.1 million below the luxury tax and having 17 players on the roster for 15 spots, the Hawks remain in trade discussions. As previously reported by HoopsHype, veteran sharpshooter **Buddy Hield** is a trade candidate to monitor. It’s also worth noting that forward **Mo Gueye** has a $2.41 million non-guaranteed salary for the upcoming season and will be re-evaluated in three or four months after suffering a fractured left foot and having surgery. Pj Washington embraces his role as a play finisher/defender and he’s on a decent contract also was a huge part of a finals run. Kuminga hasn’t showed that he’s willing to embrace role and believes he’s worth 30mill+. I don’t think the problem is that the Hawks want some unreasonable amount of compensation; it’s that the Hawks can’t really take any players or salary back. We already have too many guys and we’re scraping up against the tax line. Any sign and trade for Kuminga is going to involve finding a third team to take back some bad money.

The issue with JK is his attitude and maybe his agent. He wants a lot of playing time, he wants to be the guy, he wants to be able to play his way, he idolizes and model his game after Kobe, he wants to iso and he wants a lot of money. Aaron Turner really tried to get Kuminga the max and held out for nearly the entire summer FA last year to sign a $25m a year deal with a team option. Warriors allegedly offered more years 3-4 with a team option at $20m+ which was insufficient for JK’s team.

Now I wonder if he’ll ever recoup that money, or if it’s just gonna be mid level contracts (or less) for the near future.

Aaron Turner seems to have overplayed his hand from day one, and Kuminga has done nothing to deserve that type of deal, other than being young and uber athletic.

Now I’m curious to see how badly Kuminga’s career will spiral now that he’s going to be on prove-it contracts.

If this ends up happening, I’d have to guess it’s either Milwaukee or the Clippers. Not because of any intel for either team, but because they have TPEs that would allow them to take on Kuminga without sending back any players to Atlanta. Atlanta already has 17 players and is only $4m below the tax, so I don’t see a world where they’re willing to take on another player/additional salary unless they’re also paid enough assets to also unload some of the players they already have (mainly Hield)
