One of the greatest teams in MLB history got upset by the Mets, thats what happened.
60s and 70s were one of the best teams of those decades and had some of the best teams ever. And they would have 100% been remembered more if they didnt have to deal with the 3 Peat A’s, the 70s Pirates twice in the WS, and the having the Late 70s yankees teams in their division.
You could contend that no dynasty accomplished less than Earl Weaver’s Orioles. They AVERAGED 96 wins per 162 games from 1968-82—*fifteen years—*and what did they do with that? One World Series title.
The Braves got a lot of shit for postseason failures in the 90’s, but the O’s were up there as well.

To an extent. After a while constantly failing to meet expectations is more exhausting than not having expectations to begin with and just enjoying what you get.
I gave up on having expectations with the Mets a long time ago. Even in the Cohen era they’re a Jeckyll and Hyde team year to year. Impossible to know who’s showing up

As much as I hate the mets it’s not that shocking that they’re struggling imo. And their owner being willing to spend is probably a sign that they’ll turn things around.
Ownership matters more than people realize. And unless you’re inheriting an organization that’s already a well oiled machine, like the dodgers, a new owner is probably gonna make a lot of changes in the front office. And they’re probably gonna make mistakes and hire people bad at the job because owners usually have no experience in baseball beyond fandom. They come from some other industry and need to make decisions based on non-baseball related experience that they have and thats gonna often translate to bad decisions initially.
I haven’t done this for the MLB but I did look at nfl teams that changed ownership and usually it took 5 years for those teams to get their act together and not be a disaster. It wouldn’t shock me if that window of sucking is a different duration or when it starts for the MLB but the point is that if the same basic principle is true it seems reasonable to me that the mets are still going through growing pains.
But if growing pains are largely unavoidable it’s better to have an owner trying to win than not.
Anybody actually paying attention knew that this was going to be a bumpy ride because the entire organization was a disaster before Cohen and Stearns. This is going to be a long process and I wish Mets fans would just buckle in and accept it, they are trying to make up for decades of terrible drafting and development.
The idea was to spend like crazy while the entire farm gets rebuilt, so the spending is meant to be a band aid. Obviously nobody predicted the team to be this bad but at the same time it isn’t shocking since relying on signings/trades like this is a recipe for disaster.
I think the biggest source of frustration for Mets fans is not the fact that Mets suck (what else is new), but that we spent a lot of money to be a good team in 2026. Even more, we spent it in an unconventional way, recreating certain players in agregate, playing people out of position and relying on unproven MLB players. And literally none of those moves panned out.
Only bright spot is a couple of solid rookies, which makes it even more frustrating, because we could’ve just put them on the roster without any spending.
It wouldn’t shock me if the window were generally longer for baseball, if only because of how extensive the minor league system is in comparison to other major sports.
The same basic building blocks are required, like roster construction, scouting, talent development, etc. but there’s a lot more people involved and more time to move prospects through the system to the point where they are MLB-ready.
It also wouldn’t shock me if Cohen’s willingness and ability to spend helps cut that down a bit, but it obviously isn’t any sort of magic bullet.
It’s funny, the money was supposed to help cut down on that a few years ago when they ate all that money in deadline trades. Unfortunately that didn’t really work out.
This will be the first “sell” deadline for Stearns so I’m extremely curious to see what happens. Interestingly enough, the talk is that the team will likely not be eating money this time around. Would be hilarious if they make out far better than 2023.

Dodgers as a team are only going to be in a marginally worse position than they currently are, are going to maintain pretty similar revenue, and then only need to spend the cap on the team and can pocket all the savings on their current payroll

Atlanta’s fanbase spans most of the Southeast due to a lack of nearby competition. Bigger metro pop, stronger economic growth, higher median income, more corporate money to be had, way higher revenue.
I understand it’s fashionable to dunk on “billionare owners” or whatever, but let’s be a little bit honest at the same time.
They’ve made two World Series appearances in the last 20 years, won neither, and haven’t so much as reached the ALCS outside of those years.
I have a lot of respect for their team and how they operate. They’re incredibly skilled at making a low payroll stand out as a threat. But on the whole they have been very unsuccessful in separating themselves from the other playoff contenders that do spend money every year.
That lack of hanging on to stars is also part of their struggle to build a consistent thriving fan base despite their relative success. If the Rays were willing to even be around the mean payroll (about $70M more), I genuinely believe they’d be a perennial World Series threat with way more butts in seats. They’d be more competitive and more profitable.

Seems largely like a GM/hiring issue. When an owner is willing to spend, but hte team sucks, it’s one of two things.
Meddling owner – Owner that doesn’t know what he’s doing sticking his head into operations and baseball decisions and making bad ones (early era George Steinbrenner).
Owner that trusts the wrong people and assembles an incompetent team.
I mean the money only goes as far as the braintrust knows how to apply it. If the owner is keeping to his owner’s office and not directing trades and draft picks, the Front Office is clearly the issue here.

The goal was to pay more but on shorter terms.

i wouldn’t say it “hasn’t worked”, it’s just worked in the less fun way. it’s high cost, high reward, but low risk. until the system is humming you just have to hope those short term deals work out - when they do you have a good chance to make a run (2024), when they don’t you just trade them and keep building the farm (2023⁄2026).
It worked for the securities fraud. He threw $1.8 Billion in fines and it worked out for him. He threw money at politicians and got a new casino. He will never stop.
Cohen runs the Mets like I play franchise mode on The Show with budgets turned off. We have about the same success rate too.
