Is there any real speculation that the Celtics will actually go after Trey Murphy?
I don’t follow the NBA too closely, but wondering if you guys hear anything serious if the Celtics are really trying to make a push for TM3.
I think theyll make a move for him next offseason personally
I would say it’s unlikely at this point but not impossible
No, but if you want to circle a date in your calendar, September 4th I think is the first day Boston can aggregate Paul George’s salary with another player. Like for instance offering George + Hauser + picks for Zion and Murphy
Not tryna sound like an ass but why would the pelicans accept that
They wouldn’t
Because they’re the Pelicans is our best hope here
They’re not on a time line that will fit giving trey a payday. Maybe they’d rather have picks and an aging vet who won’t net them wins in the season, but will keep them out of bottom 3? (These are not great reasons to move a younger talent on a good contract)
It’s not about the players, it would be about the picks and swaps going to NO.
Which of our picks or swaps is worth giving up a player like Murphy? He’s a great 3rd player who can score and is on a cheap deal for the next 3 years. Literally any bad team’s unprotected 1st is a better bet than a pick that is almost certainly going to be somewhere in the 10-15 range if we even get it. We can throw in 4 bad 1sts but a team like New Orleans wants lottery picks.
This is my dream trade - feels especially feasible because the pelicans have yet to make a move this offseason. Feels like they’re waiting for something too
Give Zion a team that actually wants to compete and let the pelicans start over by giving them that clippers lottery pick next year
I don’t know about that one. You’re gonna have to explain how our defense works with that lineup because I don’t see it. Zion and Trey are both bad defenders. Zion’s even worse if you plug him at the 5, which might be the only sensible thing in a lineup with Tatum and Murphy. If you want to play a big with that lineup, that leaves Murphy or Tatum guarding a guard. And you may think you can take advantage of that on the other end, but Trey Murphy is basically just a taller Sam Hauser and doesn’t use his height to his advantage at all, so it’s easy to stick a smaller player on him.
Of course, all of that is assuming they will even be available to play, which is another story.
Murphy is a much better player than Hauser and they’re basically the same size. But yeah he’s not going to back down a guard he’s just shooting over him.
Murphy’s main advantage is he gives you very good shooting as a 3rd player on a very affordable deal so you can pair Tatum with a big on a max deal who maybe lacks a bit of scoring and still be offensively very good. Tatum + PP + Murphy + Zion + Queta is a weird lineup.
I have no argument that Murphy is a better player than Hauser. I do think there’s somewhat of an argument as to whether he’s worth the increase in salary given what his role would be. As you noted, his main advantage is providing very good shooting, which we already get from Hauser on a much cheaper deal. The argument for Murphy is more about what he could become rather than what he is now, IMO.
Still, I’m not sure how Zion fits into the picture. On its face, the mock trade is a win for the Celtics, but fit is even more important because if it all fails and you need to pivot, you’re now starting at a disadvantage negotiating your way out of it. I don’t see the fit unless Murphy is coming off the bench. I’d rather dump Hauser somewhere, then trade PG for Murphy and Poole’s expiring to create a new TPE, then make a pitch to Curry next summer.
Nobody wants PG. Absolutely nobody
Yeah what is the upside? They don’t save any money on Zion by swapping him for PG, they’ve eaten most of the worst part of this deal and Zion is at least going to be in the NBA in two years.
Feel more like Stevens is positioning the team to play this year with the roster as is. The next big moves will be unloading PGs contract when only a year remains or just waiting 2 years until he’s a FA, or possibly trading White if he shows some regression this season. I don’t see them unloading the stockpiled picks for Murphy. The 7 firsts over the next 5 drafts are Stevens only way to add major outside talent and with how fast situations can change for teams and players I think he’ll be patient and wait for someone he really covets to become available for trade. Maybe that’s at the deadline, next offseason, or even 2 years from now. It’s not an ideal situation if the team isnt able to progress like Stevens hopes, but I do think he envisions major progression from the young core around the vets Tatum, White, and PG13. I think their hoping for enough progression and a better team makeup without JB that they are contenders this season and going forward without more major trades. Its a gamble, but it is what it is. Unless im totally wrong which it likely. Im usually wrong about this Celtics.
7 firsts over the next 5 drafts and 6 of them are going to be in the 20s is not a great bet and the other is a swap that might not even convey and could be 15th.
Either Hugo or someone makes a massive leap or we pull another D White where we get a guy who can be a 2⁄3 who is on 4⁄5 money or we are in for a long couple years.
This is an absolutely fair point: seven firsts is more impressive sounding than six picks in the late 20s and a lottery ticket.
However, it must be noted that quantity over quality is a need for a half-dozen teams. Denver, for example, has five total picks (4 firsts and a second) in the next seven drafts.
> pull another DWhite
This is obviously the plan and I’m not sure there’s a good reason to doubt it will work.
White cost two (late 20s) FRP and salary filler.
Optimistic fans would look at the salary slot(s) and asset inventory - which includes Hugo and Cenac - and think Brad can “pull” TWO Derrick Whites.
Two well rounded, team oriented, high quality teammates who make smart, efficient basketball plays.
JT, a couple offensive rebounding Bigs, and THREE Derrick White types can absolutely compete for championships.
I doubt it. It’s not they don’t want him, they just can’t afford him without trading D White

Offensively we just clearly don’t need PG and Murphy together. Murphy makes total sense if one of your max players is at the rim, it doesn’t make any sense with your two max players being PG and JT.
I counted - including our rookie and Ron Harper jr- that the C’s roster currently has 7 players at the Forward position. So maybe? But probably not trading Hugo or anyone worth losing like Hauser’s shooting for Murphy’s defense.
Why do people think Harper is a forward? I always thought hes a guard
I think they want to see how the team’s standing midseason before make a move.
He’s a highly coveted player by many teams. So far, New Orleans hasn’t been in any rush to make any moves, never mind this move. So, if the time comes, the Celtics would be one of many teams trying to obtain the player.
If he was in as high demand as you think, they would have traded him by now.
Disagree, there no advantage to them trading him now vs right before they have to. He’s fully under team control with no player options at a reasonable salary of 26-27: \(27,000,000, **27-28:** \)29,000,000 and 28-29: $31,000,000. That’s quite reasonable for a player of his caliber.
Go take a look at their offseason, they’ve done nothing. It’s remarkable actually. They’re content to just run it back and keep things status quo. Dumars is as stubborn as they come. Trey is on,y getting better, his value will be at its peak in that 28-29 season.
He’s a role player on a bad team that doesn’t create his own offense or defend particularly well. He’s a catch and shoot, and pick and roll player offensively. He’s quite limited.
He isn’t as in demand as you think.
His contract is fair.
His next contract will be overpriced.
I disagree, but thats ok. I think he’s a dynamic player who has a very high ceiling offensively if he’s able to get into the right system, but I can see why you think the way you do. Have a good day!
His next contract is in 3 years? It’s not remotely relevant. The entire reason he’s an asset is he can catch and shoot at a high level on a $26M deal for 3 years. Nobody gives a shit that his “next” deal is going to be overpriced. It probably wont anyway, he’s never made an all-star team, he’s not going to get some max deal.
So was Jaylen Brown’s so
Turns out panic trading a player is actually a bad idea, I know this has been hard for this sub to accept. Waiting until other teams get more desperate is actually an advantage.
Too much reporting. If Brad was doing it we’d have barely heard about it.
I think we ride out Paul George at least until the trade deadline, and most likely into next offseason. Then see what’s on the market for an expiring contract
We ride into next offseason, reset the tax, try to move PG as a piece for a max player who is overpaid on a longer timeline and then ride out the rest of this window lamely.
So Jaylen Brown lol
He doesn’t even move the needle he doesn’t know anything about winning basketball
I don’t they have phone coverage in New Orleans
the 27m trade exception was the ticket before the brown trade, but that ship’s sailed now we’re hardcapped at the first apron. cant just swallow murphy’s deal without sending out matching salary, and only white or porzingis get there, which nobody’s keen on. pels would have to want PG, but with ingram and zion already hoarding forward minutes it’s a tough sell. reckon it’s more of a next offseason play when we can aggregate PG with hauser or draft capital. brads done heists before though, so if the pels season goes sideways by september when PG becomes aggregable, maybe we kick the tyres again. not holding my breath but it’s fun to dream.
Just on this sub
New Orleans is a garbage franchise run by morons.
I assume Brad takes all of Joe Dumars’s calls and hopes today’s the day but I don’t think Brad calls Dumars.
I dont know who’s worse, this sub with Trey Murphy, or the Lakers sub with Herb Jones.
If the C’s really wanted this dude, they would of found a way to of made it happen already.
Unless we get rid of PG somehow, I dont see it happening
