Bennett is a little behind Tolle/Early in terms of innings, but all three are likely to hit a wall and wear out by the end of the season. It’s a way bigger workload than any of them have ever done. Red Sox are gonna need guys like Crochet and Bello down the stretch.
I’d take tired Bennett over current bello easily
they could just combine them . that way bennett doesnt burn out and bello has the opener and is lights out
Bello’s splits as a starter vs reliever are insane. Opposite ends of the bell curve.

Tolle is a hoss. He’s easily got 400 innings in him.
Tolle and Bennett are on innings watch. Tolle is starting to lose velocity by the 4th inning and the outtings aren’t as strong as they were a month or so ago. Bennett is crazy efficient but he has been injured and has never pitched over 70 innings. They can not make playoff pushes. Early is there but hasn’t been as good. I’ve seen enough of Patrick Sandoval.
This team does eventually need Garrett Crochet back.
Sandoval hasn’t even thrown enough innings to see enough lol 10k/2bb shows me the stuff seems fine but the hits make me think his command is shaky and that’s not too uncommon coming back from a long layoff
He’s not missing many bats and because he hasn’t pitched in 2 years, he also can’t go deep. The standard of Red Sox pitching has risen and it feels like a good move in 2024 as someone who is in the rotation with Bello, Kutter, and Houck.
His CSW rate is the same as its been his entire career, as is his K rate. He’s just been unlucky with balls in play. He should also be able to steadily build up his pitch count as he gets more time, so any restrictions he’s facing should be easing up as other guys get more restricted. Unless he suddenly goes pear shaped, Sandoval should be a useful guy to have for the 2nd half.
Ironically, I think the need at the deadline is probably starting pitching.
Insane to say after how the year has looked
I don’t know about that, we still really need offense and that should be the priority. Our offense has been awesome lately but we can’t rely on guys like Duran/Yoshida/Siegler/Wong/Cheng. Durbin has been awesome too but we also can’t expect him to continue putting up a .900 OPS like he has for the last 1-2 months.
I’d still like to get another starter but if we add a power hitting RH bat it completely changes the makeup of the team. Just imagine giving Wilson some lineup protection and starting the lineup with Rafaela/Abreu/Wilson/RH slugger with Anthony hopefully coming back in the 5 hole.
Seems like rushing back could be a recipe for disaster.
yeah we already tried that with Anthony, and uh… that went great! (they had him swinging a bat daily while in pain, which obviously resulted in more pain and slow healing)
It’s okay though, a lot of fans insist he’s being soft, it’s his own fault, and should just play already. And who am I to question random fans on the internet?
I think those fans question the team and players who did nothing but play down these injuries until the last few weeks when they’re suddenly season-ending.
Two of the more bizarre star injury recovery stories I can remember. It’s almost like the team/players waited for a hot streak to come clean about both injuries.
Well, I am not blaming him, if anything the Sox jumped the gun on the initial diagnosis, but he’s yet to have a full season since he went pro. And that should be a bit worrisome.

I mean, when has rushing back from a serious injury ever come back to haunt anyone except for all the times it has?
Yeah if he’s worried about that clause getting triggered…bud if you come back too early it’s probably getting triggered next year instead.
But it does seem like both the team and the player have big reasons why they’d want that.
Notoriously, rushing pitching back from injury works out well for everyone.
The Red Sox did use Crochet like a workhouse in 2025. It was awesome, but I could totally see this coming. Shoulder injury from fatigue, followed by a lat strain. If he came back this year the same I think it would be a total miracle.
Yeah I followed him a lot because flair and they constantly pitched him deep and high pitch counts all season. Seemed a bad idea then and I shouted about it. He hadn’t even had a full year starting yet with all those abbreviated second half starts.

Breslow said on WEEI multiple times last year (especially after he pitched vs the Mets and was pulled at 80 pitches) that the medical staff tells the pitching group/manager how many pitches he is allowed to throw and that they must follow that. Insane to blame Cora for crochet

A healthy pitcher could suck out loud too. I don’t want him making his first start back in the wildcard round, but if he can get a start or two in September I want the ace out there

I can see this being fine. Considering the lockout if he is rehabbing anyway and is ready to pitch in games (hopefully September and not straight to potential playoffs) a few innings from the pen gives him something to build back on next year or 2028.
If he’s not healthy he’s not healthy. But going zero to 200 to zero isn’t a great path

Literally 21 games ago we were 14 games under .500 and out of it, let alone 30 games in
Hope we don’t collapse in September after this amazing run to get us where we aren’t a laughing stock. I do worry about the arms of these young guns however.
If Crochet is well in October, Boston can be the class of the AL.
