Reminds me of trying to teach the European exchange student in my class how to play softball during a pick up game in high-school. Just couldn’t comprehend when and when not to run forward and when to go back to the base. Pure pandemonium on every fly ball.
Crawford was also at fault. They were running on the hit. Realmuto was already almost at third when Crawford turned around. Once he saw Realmuto he should not have kept going back to third.
Crawford shouldn’t have done that, but I’m definitely willing to give more grace to a rookie making that mistake than the veteran JT doing that.
I think Crawford was running on contact since Realmuto could replace him at 3rd as the tying run if he’s thrown out. The ball was hit softly enough that Crawford should’ve froze and just beat Muncy back to the bag, but that’s a tough call to make in the moment. Once he broke for home, all he could do was get in a rundown to make sure Realmuto could take his place at 3rd, which was working until Realmuto apparently forgot where he was and what he was supposed to be doing
There’s nothing wrong with doing that, that’s not really a mistake. If he runs back to the bag safely and both are on the bag, then Realmuto’s out (Crawford’s entitled to his original bag) and so be it. Otherwise, he was obviously hoping to extend the rundown long enough to give Marsh a chance to get to 2nd, and running back and forth as long as you can even if it’s hopeless does that.
That’s all Realmuto seeing Crawford coming back towards 3rd and having a badly timed brain fart.
Why? He would either force the catcher to go tag at him at 3rd or make one extra throw, that could possibly give the runner at first time to get to second or the ball to get kicked, no real downside
Why? There’s nothing wrong with forcing an extra throw.
Watched this clip several times to try and see what Realmuto was thinking and I have no clue. He sees Betts at the bag to get the throw from Rushing and both Muncy and Scott are waiting at the plate if Betts can’t tag Crawford. The only angle I can come up with is Realmuto thought Crawford could turn around, outrun Betts and force a throw to home, which could’ve resulted in a footrace back to 3rd between Crawford and Scott/Muncy since no one would be covering 3rd, but Call was coming in from left to help with the rundown.
Just an all around awful play, one of the worst I’ve seen since Baez backpedaled down the first base line against the Pirates

1 = pitcher 2 = catcher 3 = first baseman 4 = second baseman 5 = third baseman 6 = shortstop 7 = left fielder 8 = center fielder 9 = right fielder
So in this case, it means third baseman to catcher to shortstop to second baseman to complete the double play.

This game had some of the worst base running I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen videos of me running
As much as people want to talk about payroll, this is the reason the dodgers are such an good team. They are well coached and just play smart baseball. Defense, baserunning, small ball, etc. They do the little things that add up and other teams just don’t consistently. Look at a team like the Mets with a giant payroll but they can’t play good defense or run the bases.
I still remember when people wanted Dave Roberts fired when he couldn’t win a World Series. I miss those times when the Dodgers choked like all of us.
