If you include the Haslem role of “never plays but basically a coach” he could do it infinitely. Even a 60 year old LeBron would be better as a 15th man than whatever G leaguer you would have.

If you’re asking “how long could he actually get minutes?” then I’d say at least another five years. He’s still a top 20 guy in the league, so you’re asking how long can he be top 220.

But in reality I think his career would end suddenly, not gradually. It wouldn’t be that goes from 6th man to 7th to 8th etc. One year he’d start as a bench player and would be completely washed and it would be over. Or he’d get a career ending injury as a 45 year old.

The honest answer is way lower than people want it to be. The skills that age well — passing, IQ, positional size — those keep him useful for a while. What falls off a cliff in your late 40s is the thing that makes you a legit rotation player: being able to survive defensively for 12-15 minutes against actual NBA athletes. I’d say 44, maybe 45 as a genuine top-360 guy who earns his minutes. Past that you’re basically a player-coach, and OP already ruled that out。

Assuming his health is fine (in the sense that he isn’t battling any actual physical issues, beyond expected decline in ability) I would argue he could legitimately do another 5 years.

Maybe a few more years, he’s definitely lost a step and body isn’t holding up like it used to. Yeah he could come in and be a great point forward off the bench but the total lack of defense would negate the positives on offense.

He could play until 55 and not be the worst in the NBA as long as he only played like 15 games for 10 minutes every now and then. He’s got like two more years as a starter, maybe another year on name value alone like Westbrook starting for longer than he probably should have. I think he’s got at least 5 more years as a quality roleplayer who can play 15-20 minutes and another 10 in a Nick Collision role.

Huge LeBron fan, but he’s not a top 20 player anymore. His defense isn’t what it used to be, his first step is gone, and he commits too many turnover. Top 50 I’ll give ya, but he’s not top 20. His issue is, he can’t transition to be an off the ball player. He has to have the ball in his hands to be effective. Honestly think til his mid to late 40s, even as a bench player his legs will probably get the best of him. I remember a couple of interviews about how sore they always feel now compared to when he was younger and comparing them to tires thats been on for 20+ years.

If “capable” is like 8-10 minutes a night, he could go another five years probably? I don’t see how he doesn’t collapse from just the accumulation of little injuries over time at that point, but I’ve been wrong about his longevity before

The thing about this is that anyone on any NBA team (or any pro sport) would still have to train hard year round just to be capable of giving quality minutes, even if it’s only 5 minutes a game. Not many athletes would willingly do that to their body into their late 40s and 50s. In the long run it’s just not worth it. Some might even argue that it’s already not worth it for him right now.

45yo Lebron is probably giving you a fairly efficient 15-5-5 in like 20 minutes off the bench tbh, and i dont know how much that drops for a few years after that. I think his career probably ends abruptly with the next moderate injury he suffers though, rather than through any deficiency in his on-court performances.

His decline has been more and more noticeable exponentially as he gets older (still insane how good he is) but i think he could play even longer if he started playing just a bit less. 45 seems reasonable, maybe an upper limit of 48 which is mind boggling.

I think he and Steph could both make it to 45 with slowly diminishing roles.

They key would be avoiding an achilles tear or microfracture knee surgery. An ACL he could could come back from since he’s always been a more straight line athlete. If he keeps lowering his minutes with age to avoid said injury, i honestly believe he could play until 50 or even early in his 50s.

If you really think about it, he could lose all his verticality and speed and still move like Jokic. He’d still have the passing chops and the raw strength to continue being a scoring presence in the post. I feel very confident LBJ could still put up 6 points in 15 minutes at age 52 for instance.

The issue will be when his defense deteriorates to the point he can no longer be playable in the playoffs. Going back to the Jokic comparison, Jokic at his peak was a neutral defender, and LBJ can 100% mimic Jokic’s hands and defensive IQ and can call out out plays to add value. But like with Jokic, who can’t guard in space, once LeBron gets to that point, he would have to be strictly a backline defender. That brings issues that Jokic doesn’t have, primarily the raw size and rebounding ability. A floor-bound LeBron will be an even more negative rim protector than Jokic is while not offering elite rebounding. That would make him a bottom 50 defender and unplayable in the playoffs.

What that age is, is anyone’s guess. I’d bet on age 48-50 and he’d be able to get a few more years of regular season offensive play until he becomes a 6, 3 and 3 player in 15 minutes per game.

Well, since his 42 pretty much matches most stars’ 32, if he keeps declining at a completely steady pace then probably until 50-52 years old, which is incredible.

The problem though is that sometimes the drop off is sudden and unpredictable. CP3 went from still an all star to almost unplayable in like a month. One random injury could end it at any time, so I don’t think Bron can make it that far even if he wants to

I don’t know how long Lebron could go. But because of shooting ability & his height, Kevin Durant could stay in the league longer than James. With Durant’s height and that high release he’d have no problem getting off that jumper at age 50.

He could play until 50 at least, and likely beyond. There are teams who keep vets on the bench for their leadership (see Haslem) even if they might not be able to bring much to the game itself.

But LeBron’s IQ? His size? You could throw him in at center or power forward, guarding a guy in the post, and let him grab rebounds, make plays, and put shots up near the basket, and I’m sure he’d be effective enough at that to get significant rotation minutes through to the age of 50.

I think the trouble comes with playing him in a guard/wing position because there is a lot more movement and quick guys. LeBron still has his spring, but putting in minutes like that? We’ve already seen him manage his effort level in LA, not rushing out to guard shots from shooters who were unreliable and giving them open looks and such.
