Derek Hill throws out Shohei Ohtani out at 2B for the 3rd out. Eliezer Alfonzo’s run does not score because he didnt touch home before the out occurred.
Dave Roberts has been shaking his head a lot this series.
What is blud doing?
How does someone starting on second with a lead end up in this position?
He could have jogged the whole time and made it with enough time. He pulled up a 1⁄3 of the way past 3rd base. Deserves all the smoke.
Eta: shohei making a hustle play thinking CF not gonna drop a dime, not mad at that. But you gotta guarantee a run in that position on both runners
Forgot the rules for a second. Maybe never knew them.
The saving grace of this stretch is that we’ve probably got a whole new album of Disappointed Dave gifs/memes.
And the Phillies made an even more embarrassing play to end the game
he’s been shaking his head all month sadly
I know who he’s selling now
at some point Dave’s just gonna permanently tilt his head and call it a personality trait
Yankees rubbed off on them
Yet the Dodgers still win
Lollygagging to home and not getting a run to end an inning feels just as bad as a WR/RB dropping a ball right as they walk into the endzone
Still have nightmares about Desean, huh?
Who’s the Phillies version of Nelson Agholor?
Castellanos obviously
Casty was a free agent that severely disappointed. I’d go with Bohm; top draft pick who is okay but has never lived up to the expectations outside of brief flashes.
Aghlor was elite in our SB run in 2017 though and balled out in the Super Bowl.
Being the, “brief flashes.” Bohm crushed it in his first cup of coffee and the first half of 2024.
It’s a great comparison, I wish Bohm had a ring as well
They both have quality memes
I personally no longer talk shit after the Gibbs fumble.
Westbrook scored on the next play.
..and the dude slipped on home plate! That looked concerning.
He was dancing at 2nd base when he hit a double earlier. Dude is a clown
Wow thats a great comparison…
While I get what you’re saying. Him slipping on home plate after is exactly why you don’t see players sprinting through home plate it’s like ice on spikes. They should honestly change the material or add a texture to it to avoid it.
In a 1 run game no less.
Honestly, I get their job is extremely hard, but these guys get paid millions to play a game. They make like $10 per fuckin step and you can’t even hussle?
This is more WR/RB jogging into the end zone and someone getting a holding call at the 40 when you’re still at the 5 yard line.
I think having a hr bounce off your head instead of into your glove is akin to a wr/rb dropping the ball before getting to the end zone.
forgetting to touch home is the baseball equivalent of showboating a touchdown you haven’t scored yet
Always run through the base kids.
Just poor base running all around
Alfonzo learned his baserunning in the Tigers’ system too 😞
At least Derek Hill made a play lol
So many Tigers legends in this play lol.
Yes, legends.
Oh brother, you won’t believe how this games ends…
only at !B and Home Plate (not a base).
How do you not reach home on 2 outs before the batter reaches 2nd
Clip doesn’t show it, but Alfonso slowed up and started jogging with 1⁄3 of the way to go. By the time he saw it was a close play at 2nd he tried to run hard again, but it was too late. Inexcusable play by Alfonso.
Eh, the clip does kinda show it. You can see it after they switch cameras when the throw leaves the CF hand.
Only the tail end of when he tried to restart his run. He started a light jog before that which is clearer on a longer replay.
Can we show Arozarena this clip? He practically walked home recently and it was maddening to watch.
Probably a hot take but I want to see managers treat inexcusable play like high school coaches. 20 poles for Alfonso after the game
Ohtani fast?
He had a great jump too, he was already halfway to 3rd by time the ball even left the infield
Focus on me chump!
Sox legend
I’m giving grace to Alfonso coz this is just his second hit ever…Shohei didn’t have to turn that into a double though
He’s been in the minors for about 10 years and will probably be sent down again because he has zero situational awareness, a terrible bat, and poor overall understanding of the game. This is a next man up situation at backstop for the Dodgers,
TEN YEARS IN THE MINORS AND HE’S NOT HAULING ASS EVERY POSSIBLE CHANCE? WTF ARE YOU DOING?
Fuck, if I was in the minors for a decade and got a sniff at the show, I’d absolutely be busting my ass at every opportunity.
On everything, this is likely your ONE chance to make millions of dollars and you’re jogging with 2 outs??
He lost his sister and step mother to the earthquake a month ago, and they were confirmed dead the morning of his debut. I feel like focus issues are somewhat understandable, even if they still hurt his chances to stay up in the bigs
:(
“Poor situational awareness” and “poor understanding of the game” are the same…and the bat has yet to really be seen considering he just starts every 3 games…he’ll definitely be sent back down to the minors but when the alternative for the backup backup catcher is Chuckie Robinson, you’ll take what you can get.
Can’t blame a guy for not knowing about situational running when he’s never done it before.
Not to shit on my own team, but he’s played like a decade in the minors. He has absolutely been in this situation before.
Yeah, I was being sarcastic haha. He got complacent and then tried to speed things up when he realized Sho might be out.
Ah my bad.
No worries, it can be hard to read sarcasm.
Plus he’s from a baseball family. His father played in the MLB and his brother played in the minors as well…
Pages was also giving him the slow down sign. I don’t think anyone realized Shohei was going for two.
Alphonso was literally staring at Ohtani going for two
That’s not a slowdown sign when Pages out his hands up. Thats the no need to slide and hurt yourself sign. Its safer to run through at a controlled speed.
Problem is Alfonzo let up as soon as he rounds third make this play way closer then it should be. He also almost hurts himself trying to speed up at the last minute to beat the throw.
Isn’t the problem that Ohtani got out at second
Trying to stretch for two there is whatever. A worse throw and he’s probably safe. Not running hard to make sure that run scores is inexcusable. Managers would prefer to see a guy run into an out trying to stretch a double than do what Alfonzo did 10⁄10 times.
Yep the main problem is Alfonzo not running it out. He basically stopped to stare at Ohtani. He stays in second or third gear after rounding third all the way through home and hes safe by a mile.
Has he never gotten a hit in the minors? This is inexcusable laziness.
Also, running through the plate is a hazard in these conditions. The plate looks slippery af
Walking to the base was hazardous for him
Remember when Kendrys Morales broke his leg jumping on home plate after a walk off home run In 2010?
It is interesting bc that is what precipitated the Pujols signing in 2011.
This is 100% on Ohtani and anyone who says otherwise is a biased Ohtani glazer (which tbf is the majority of this sub).
Even if the run counted, trying to leg that into a double for god knows what reason was incredibly poor baserunning.
I think it was a bad decision for Ohtani, that still doesn’t excuse the other runner because it doesn’t matter what Ohtani did, he should have scored easily. If he does what he’s supposed to and taught to do, then Ohtani’s decision isn’t relevant for him
Stupid all around.
Yep Alonso needs to run it out, but him jogging home doesn’t affect the result if Shohei doesn’t overcommit to the throw going home and try to sneak into second
Swiss cheese model.
Take out any one of those, and a run scores.
Pages is giving the signal to not slide, no? I don’t know that there is a signal to slow down.
That generally means “there’s no play at the plate.” I think you see pretty much every single runner ease up at that point.
I know it’s not allowed to question Shohei in here, but him trying to take second with 2 outs is the biggest blunder in this situation. What Alfonzo did probably occurs 15-20x every single night across mlb.
Derek Hill has been the best pick up of the year for the Phills
He’s awesome. White Sox were sad to see him get traded but definitely wish him well on the Phils.
So glad he’s having success over there! I was digging him on the Sox but we had to make space I guess.
Unfortunately, they needed the roster space and pereira got hurt 2 seconds after hill got traded
Atta boy Derek
any conflicting feelings about this? lol
What? Me? Conflicted?
Bruh this is something the Reds would do 😂
Gyat damn
Am I missing something about the initial safe call at second? He looked super clearly out without even the slightest need for replay, no?
I would say he looked clearly out initially and the replay shows he was safe.
Good eye – after seeing the full thing on MLB.com, now I see that he didn’t get him with the initial tag attempt and MAY have gotten him on the upwards swipe…. but I fully agree it looks like he might have been safe on the reply. The base getting covered with dirt makes it a bit hard to say for sure.

He may have gotten him on the swipe in the lead leg but I didn’t see any video to support it.. I think it should have been call stands instead of confirmed. But what’re you gonna do
You can pretty clearly see his pants leg move at 35 seconds in that clip. It’s close enough that I could see the call standing, not being confirmed, but to my eye the tag just barely gets in there a frame or two before Shohei’s on the base.
On the next angle you can also see his glove ripple. It’s not the clearest, and I get being mad if it’s your team, but I think it’s the right call
That was a horrible idea by Ohtani, he was out by 20 feet
The added little safe shimmy was just something
Sorry but what is Ohtani doing trying to stretch that into a double. Not excusing Alfonzo’s jog home but still.
Look how far Hill had to run to get it
None of that matters if you’re out by a mile. Ohtani tried to get cute with it and Alfonso ends up being the one looking bad
You’re arguing backwards. Ohtani made a calculation and was bested by Hill. Alfonso looks bad by his own (in)action
The safest and smartest thing Ohtani can do there with 2 outs is take the run. There’s absolutely no arguing that, especially with his “banged up knee”. They both made equally bad decisions.
What do you mean take the run? In no world would someone expect to get tagged out before the guy at second makes it home. Calling them equally bad decisions is laughable when one is hustling and one is the opposite.
Take the run = take the single and not get thrown out by a mile. Thats insane to me that you think Ohtani made the correct decision. Unless you have Chandler Simpson hitting that ball, Alfonso has no business thinking his hitter is going for 2nd on a routine grounder to the outfield. You can’t even admit that he got thrown out by a mile
He didn’t make the correct decision but it should have had zero effect on the run scoring. Not sure why that’s hard for you to understand.
Gotcha, so “risk getting out with 2 outs and losing a run” > “taking a guaranteed single + run in a 1 run game”. Please never coach baseball
As the other person said, the run should’ve never been in question. The calculation should be “risk getting the third out for an extra base” vs. “guaranteed single”. There’s no world in which, with two outs, the batter should get to second before a runner gets from second to home
He wasn’t out by a mile. He was called safe by the umpire and the video shows the play was close.

This is close to you?
He doesn’t hit well at CBP for some weird reason so he was excited
I wonder where the ball was when he was rounding first. Its initial trajectory really made it look like it would split the defenders but it really died in the grass
I think he just expected the CF to come up firing for home and thought he could sneak a base
Both we’re not ideal.. Learning lesson for the team.
I’m not trying to be a jackass but look at his stats vs the Phillies, batting wise. He barely shows up. Regular and post-season. Might be something mental that he’s trying to do more because of that
Almost every other game I watch him in he’s electric. I don’t get it.
Alfonzo running the bases
This somehow would NOT be the worst base running error of this game 😂
I was just reading these comments from earlier on the game.
Bad base running?
HOLD MY BEER.

If today has taught us anything, it is coach pitch players are more fundamentally sound than professional Major League players.
Run out your bases and wear your cups, kids.
The slip on the base is the cherry on top
Slowhei Ohtani
Slowhei Ohtaknee
what a dumb ass, almost injures himself, too
Not the worst catcher baserunning error today 😬
ZAM!
I’m sure Alfonso (#64) is thrilled that this replay lets everyone repeatedly see his athletic prowess as he touches home plate and collapses like a six year old who accidentally ran onto the bowling alley at his birthday party.
Man was out for an evening stroll.
Benchable
Was it that guys first time at home plate? Thing almost killed him
Yo wtf Alfonso, doesn’t matter what Shohei is doing, if you make it home before the out occurs, it counts, so haul your ass to home plate you dumbass
#MAXIMUM DEREK
“Fat fuck”- Dalton Rushing probably
As a marlins fan I miss Hill
As a White Sox fan, I enjoyed my time with Hill.
backup backup catcher behavior
Oh my gosh. A time play. Don’t see that one too often!
Why was Ohtani trying for two
Ohtani can’t make the 3rd out there, but Alfonzo shouldn’t have been jogging home. I’ll excuse him because it is extremely humid tonight and I’ve felt lethargic too all day.
Absolutely terrible effort by Alfonzo and the 2nd base ump.
What a lazy ass.
This really shows how great reviews have been for baseball. Runner deserved it for trotting home.
5 years ago this is just some play we’d have to be mad about as we mumble getting into bed about bad umps.
I mean… it’s also never a double. Poor from both
Yeah, wrong judgment from Shohei.
Not sure I’ve ever seen someone trip and fall over home plate before
Thanks Dino Ebel. Love the guy, but man he dropped the ball again here.
Crazily enough, that was only the second dumbest running error in that game.
I blame both of them. Shohei didn’t need to try to stretch it into a double. And its inexcusable to run like Alfonzo did.
dumbasssssss
Thats how you lose your spot in the show real quick. It’s not hard to run through the plate
Derek Hill is my hero 🥰
I was checking the mlb gameday for updates and saw that Ohtani had tied the game with a double, only to get a nice surprise when I checked back and it was 0-1 again lol.
Come on
Ohtani is too fast and too slow at the same time…if he was slower they would have had to wait just a bit longer to tag him and faster he would have been safe.
Horrible base running by both Alonzo and Ohtani. jogging home and Ohtani making the bonehead decision to go for 2.
Can anybody explain why it matters that the runner didn’t touch home base when Ohtani was apparently safe on 2nd base?
Edit: Answer, he was not safe at 2nd💀
He wasn’t safe. It was reviewed and Ohtani was called out.
Oh my fault, that makes sense now
Because He was NOT apparently safe on 2nd base
Dodgers running the bases like the Yankees. Must’ve rubbed off on them.
Bums, both of them. /s
Why on earth is that guy jogging home? What awful idiotic base running. For how much third base coaches get paid they really suck at their jobs
Derek Hill is becoming a phillies legend.
I was sad we didn’t have the space for him to stay. Glad he’s doing well tho
Why you fucking lollygagging. Run mf
Sho shouldn’t have stretched his play and Alfonso should’ve run a little bit faster. Thankfully they still won on runs on the inning after this. Plot armor is still activated, I guess.
He’s so good x4
Yikes
I also love how he stepped on the plate and fell down, like OH SHIT HE’S GOING TO 2ND.
somebody about to lose his contract. and it won’t be ohtani
The run does not, uh, cross
Lollygagger!
Nah man that’s a “go clean out your locker” type of move.
Ohtani with injured leg trying hard running but the younger backup back up catcher not running through the home plate is not a good look
Why would you go 2 on that
Lunch has been canceled due to lack of hustle. Deal with it.
Umpire’s first time public speaking?
Paid millions of dollars a year and you can’t even hustle while running the bases…embarrassing. My 12 year old would get benched on his team if he ran like that.
Runner going home being lazy as hell.
Honestly jog is a strong word. That was a midnight waltz. Embarrassing lmao
And he almost broke his ankle touching the plate
Fundamentals - didn’t the dodger scouting report said Yankee fundamentals were bad?
Don’t be like Alfonzo, kids!! Make sure to hustle the ENTIRE time a play is still happening. No excuse for that….don’t get me wrong, I hate the Dodgers, so I’m glad it happened. But it shouldn’t have.
Who tf is Eliezer Alfonzo
The Ump thought that was SAFE! Dodger bias is real…. how could the great Ohtani possibly be OUT!
Blowthani back at it again
Ohtani’s aura granted him the benefit of the doubt safe call
Alfonzo lost a lot of credibility there. Dodgers probably looking for a catcher before the trade deadline.
Idk why youre getting down voted??
Ohtani is always so confident when he’s challenging a call even when he’s clearly out. It annoys me so much and I don’t know why.
Players in general being confidently wrong/lying. I just got a huge dose of it watching the World Cup. I’m glad they make them leave the field for a minute. Should do that in the NBA too
The flopping in the World Cup was brutal. They were all acting like we all don’t have instant replay in our hands.
lol at the downvotes
